Hibiscus, or the Chinese rose, is not so easy to propagate compared to other indoor flowers. Usually it is bred by cutting, but some growers prefer growing a flower from seeds. We will tell you in detail about each of these methods of reproduction of hibiscus and determine their advantages and disadvantages.

The most common method of reproduction of hibiscus at home is cutting. This method allows you to save the varietal quality of the plant and get viable seedlings in a short time. Although rooting the cuttings is not very simple: many of them never take root. Another plus in favor of grafting is that the flowering of the planted stem begins the very next year.

Procurement of cuttings

To prepare cuttings carefully inspect the indoor flower:

  1. Outline the strongest stems with a semi-woody bark.
  2. Cut them with a sharp and antiseptic-treated knife or pruner. The incision should be made diagonally to get a large area of \u200b\u200bfood through the stem.
  3. Cut the shoot so that its length is about 15 cm. Each of them must have from 3 to 4 internodes.
  4. Shorten the stem from the top, stepping back from the upper internode about 1 cm. In this case, the cut should be straight. So its area will be minimal, which means that the loss of moisture from it will also be minimal.
  5. Remove the lower leaves completely, and shorten the upper leaves by 30-50% to reduce evaporation.

Rooting cuttings can be done in various ways. Some growers rooted shoots in the water, others recommend planting them in a pot at once, and still others say that it is best to plant the cuttings in peat tablets. Consider each of the ways.

Rooting in water

To grow roots on the handle:

  1. Choose a suitable capacity. It is desirable that its walls are not transparent.
  2. Fill the container with tap water that has been settled for 24 hours at room temperature.
  3. Put the cutting into the water so that under the water there is one interstitial.
  4. Pull the plastic bag over the top and secure it with a rubber band.
  5. Place a container with a handle on a well-lit window sill. The room temperature should be kept at 25 ° C (small deviations in one direction or another are allowed).
  6. When you notice that condensation has accumulated on the plastic bag, remove it to ventilate. And then put it on again. If this is not done, the stalk may rot.
  7. If the water becomes turbid, replace it with fresh water. Before each change of water, rinse the shoots in water at room temperature.

With this method, rooting escape occurs in about 3-4 weeks. But it is possible to plant it in a pot only when the length of the roots is 5 cm. If they are smaller or larger, the risk that the stalk will not take root increases.

Rooting in the ground

Reproduction of hibiscus cuttings rooting method in the ground is as follows:

  1. Prepare a pot with a volume of 200 to 500 ml. Volume depends on the size of the cutting.
  2. Wash the pot with household soap and disinfect it by pouring boiling water from the kettle.
  3. At the bottom of the pot lay the drainage mixture (crushed and roasted brick, mixed with charcoal and washed river sand).
  4. Fill the pot with a universal primer for indoor flowers. It can be bought at a flower shop. You can prepare the soil with your own hands. To do this, mix 2 parts of sand, 1 part of turf and 1 part of leafy ground. This composition is very loose, it allows air and water. Before use, calcine it in the oven for 2 hours.
  5. Pour another layer of river sand over the ground. Its thickness should be about 2 cm. Roots begin to form in the sand. And only then they penetrate deep into the ground and begin to take nutrients from it.
  6. Stick the stalk into the center of the prepared pot. Liberally pour the soil.
  7. Pull the plastic bag over the top and secure it with a rubber band. Warm air will help the cutting to grow roots faster.
  8. Put the pot in a warm and well-lit place.
  9. Water the soil as it dries.

If you propagate hibiscus cuttings by rooting in the soil, the roots will form in about 2 months. But the seedlings obtained at the same time, will be stronger and more viable, as they will initially receive nutrients from the soil.

Rooting in a peat tablet

For rooting cuttings in a peat tablet:

  1. Soak a tablet with a diameter of at least 4 cm in boiled water, cooled to room temperature, until complete swelling.
  2. Take a plastic cup and fill its bottom with disinfected expanded clay.
  3. Pour the calcined soil on top (universal from the store or prepared from river sand, sheet and sod land, taken in the ratio 2: 1: 1 according to the order). Leave space for peat tablets.
  4. Stick the cutting to a depth of 2 to 3 cm in the middle of the tablet and place it in a plastic cup on top of the ground. Sprinkle empty spaces with soil. Moisturize her.
  5. Wear a plastic bag and secure it with a garter.
  6. Place the container on a well-lit window sill. Immediately moisten the soil, air the greenhouse, remove condensate from the package.

With this method of rooting, the roots also appear after 2 months. Florists assure that roots grow in peat better than in simple soil, as it is more loose and retains moisture and heat well.

Reproduction of hibiscus seeds

Hibiscus can be propagated by seed. For this:

  1. Prepare a shallow bowl (height 7-8 cm) and fill it with universal soil. Instead, you can use any other loose and nutritious mixture. The main thing is that it should be treated for infections and pests.
  2. Make shallow grooves in the bowl, which need to be moistened with water using a spray bottle.
  3. Put hibiscus seeds in the grooves, but do not dig them down. Otherwise they will not germinate.
  4. Cover the plate with film and place in a well-lit and warm place.
  5. Ventilate the mini-hothouse regularly and moisten the soil.
  6. When shoots appear, remove the film.

When the seedlings grow and get stronger, they will need to be seated in separate containers.

Attention!   Plants grown from seeds begin to bloom only at 4 years of age. Therefore, this method of reproduction is better to choose when you do not have the opportunity to propagate hibiscus by cutting.

Care of seedlings

Regardless of which breeding method you choose, care for the hibiscus seedlings as follows:

  • Maintain the room temperature at + 20 ... + 25 o C. At night, do not allow the temperature to fall below 15 o C.
  • Moisturize when the topsoil is dry. But do not wait for the drying of the whole earth coma.
  • Every 1-2 weeks process seedlings with a solution of Fundazole to prevent root rot.
  • In hot weather, spray the leaves of hibiscus, but after this procedure, the flower can not be put under the direct rays of the sun.

After rooting do fertilizing universal fertilizer for indoor plants. Enough two feedings per month.

Experienced growers give the following tips:

  • When rooting cuttings in water, add bone meal or activated charcoal to water. They will not allow water to bloom, then it will need to be changed less often.
  • Also add to the water a solution of root growth stimulator (1 drop of Kornevin, Epin or Kornerosta is enough).
  • When rooting with the help of soil choose a container that is not too large. Otherwise, the soil will be over-wetted. And this can provoke the growth of fungi that cause rotting of the cutting.
  • When breeding hibiscus seedling method, buy seeds only from reputable manufacturers, to be sure that in 4 years you will receive exactly the same flowers as in the picture from the package.

At home, hibiscus breeds in two ways: through seedlings and grafting. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, each of them has the right to exist. Choose the most convenient way of breeding hibiscus and strictly follow the specified instructions. Then in a few months you will get strong and viable seedlings.

Grafting is a vegetative way of plant reproduction.  This method is quite simple, it can even beginner grower. Another important advantage of this method is the fact that hibiscus grown from a cutting plant will delight in flowering within a year, while retaining all the varietal characteristics of the mother plant (the color of the flower, its terry). The root system formed by grafting is stronger and more powerful than those plants that were propagated by other means, for example, seeds (how to grow a room hibiscus from seeds, as well as further care for the flower after planting, read).

Learn more about reproduction, planting and further care of hibiscus in the house and garden, as well as see photos of the flower, you can.

What time of year is it best to propagate the plant?

The best time to cut the cuttings is from April to August. Experienced growers recommend rooting to be carried out in May, since it is in this month that the plant is as active as possible: new cells appear and develop, all metabolic processes take place at an accelerated rate. If the hibiscus is rooted in the last month of spring, then the likelihood that the plant will take root will be close to 100%.

The grafting can be carried out in winter, but the rooting process will take place more slowly and it will not always be possible to achieve a positive effect, since in winter there is no such lighting, those temperatures that are necessary to escape.

How to prepare for landing?

The earth

For rooting cutting is used peat, in which you can add sphagnum moss: peat will give the soil looseness and airiness, and the moss will maintain the optimum level of humidity in the pot (how to prepare the soil for hibiscus and whether you can buy it in the store, read). You can use a mixture of garden land with river sand and peat in equal proportions. Also rooting hibiscus can just be in the wet coarse sand.

Another used and purchased soil on the basis of peat. The main condition is that the substrate should be light and breathable. The soil that is poured into a pot for permanent habitat of hibiscus, should consist of:

  • 4 pieces of turf land;
  • 3 pieces of leafy ground;
  • 1 parts of humus;
  • 1 part of coarse sand.

As an option: turf soil, humus, sand in a ratio of 2: 1: 1.

Pot

  1. Material.  For rooting the cutting in the soil, it is important to use plastic transparent containers in order to observe the development of its root system. If there are no special pots, you can use large plastic cups.

But it must be remembered that any container should contain a drainage hole to drain excess moisture.

  2. The size.  Most often, for rooting in the soil flower growers take the capacity from 200 to 500 ml, it all depends on the size of the cutting. Its diameter should be close to 9 cm.

Hibiscus blooms when its roots grow freely in a pot. Therefore, after rooting should be transplanted indoor flower in a spacious pot.

Planting material

Cut hibiscus cuttings should occur only after the plant has faded. A young, developed shoot with half-lignified bark is cut obliquely with a clean, sharp knife or shears. The stalk should be about 15 cm long and with 3-5 interstices.

Lower leaves are completely removed from the stalk  and the top ones are cut in half to reduce evaporation, the upper part of the shoot is shortened by a direct cut. The lower part of the stalk before rooting in the substrate is dipped in "Kornevin."

How to root at home?

In water

In the ground

  1. A drainage layer is placed at the bottom of a transparent plastic pot, the rest of the space is filled with soil.
  2. The stalk, pretreated with Kornevin, is buried 2 cm in the moistened soil and lightly pressed on by the hands for better fixation.
  3. On top of the container is covered with a plastic bag, which is fixed with an elastic band, or a plastic bottle, placed in a well-lit place, but without direct sunlight.

The temperature, which is necessary for a young plant, is + 22С - + 25С. It is necessary to water as the soil dries out, systematically ventilate the “greenhouse”.

Attention!  If the plastic bag is covered with condensate from the inside, then it should be carefully removed, shake off the water and placed back on the container with the handle.

When after about 1.5 months the plant releases the roots, it can be transplanted into a permanent pot and looked after as an adult plant.

If we compare the two methods of rooting, the preference is always on the side of growing the roots in the substrate.  Compared with fragile and brittle roots, sprouted in water, the root system, grown in the soil, is already adapted to obtain moisture and nutrition. It is stronger and adapted to the new habitat. As a result, such a plant will start to gain strength and growth faster, and will quickly release flower buds. In addition, plant such a plant will be much easier, using the method of transshipment.

Also rooting the stalk of hibiscus can be in the peat tablet.

  1. In a plastic cup with a volume of 300 ml a little drainage is filled up, and then a tablet is placed. It is necessary to pour boiled water over it, which will make the tablet swell.
  2. Cut and processed by a growth stimulator, the cuttings go deeper into a 2–3 cm tablet.
  3. Top capacity is covered with a package.

As the substrate dries out, it needs to be watered. After the roots grow, the plant can be planted in a permanent pot.

How to care for the first time?

Care for hibiscus that has been transplanted into a permanent container after rooting should be the same as for an adult plant.

  • Hibiscus is a light-loving plant. It is preferable to put it to the window or to another well-lit place.
  • The recommended temperature in summer is + 20С - + 22С, in winter - + 14С - + 16С.
  • It is necessary to systematically spray the plant to maintain a high level of humidity, so necessary for hibiscus. Also, the humidity can be increased by a container with water located next to the plant.

When spraying with a spray bottle, it is necessary to ensure that water does not fall on the flowers, otherwise they may become stained and fall off.

  • The flower likes abundant watering. It should be carried out with separated water at room temperature. Water the plant should be as the drying of the top layer of soil. In winter, the frequency of watering can be reduced.
  • Fertilization can be a solution of water and nitroammofoski (5 - 10 g per 1 liter of water), also suitable and complex fertilizers from a flower shop (for example, "Biohumus").

What to do if the indoor plant does not take root?

Possible problems arising during grafting include the following:

  1. The leaves on the handle turned yellow and fell off. This is nothing wrong, it is a natural process. If the plant is safely rooted, then be sure to release new foliage.
  2. Rooted in the water stalk fades after transplanting into the ground. Most likely, when planting a young plant, its root system was disrupted. Hibiscus will have to be cut again, since there is practically no chance of survival for such a cutting.
  3. The young hibiscus shows signs of infectious diseases (rot, mealy spots, etc.). For the prevention of this phenomenon, it is recommended to disinfect the soil, the pot into which the cuttings will be planted (fungicide treatment, heat treatment).

It is important to remember that not only successful grafting is the key to active growth of a healthy plant,  but systematic care for him is also an integral part of the successful development of hibiscus. Having provided it to a young plant, it will be possible to enjoy lush flowering for many more years.

The Chinese rose, better known as hibiscus, is a popular indoor and outdoor plant in our country. The most common varieties such as grassy hibiscus, tree, garden (Syrian). A particular advantage of culture is its tendency to reproduce quickly and efficiently at home. If you follow certain rules and recommendations, this procedure will not take much time and effort and will allow you to get the required number of plants. Hibiscus are propagated by seed, bush dividing, grafting and grafting.

    Show all

      Cuttings

This method of growing hibiscus is simple and effective. Vegetative reproduction allows you to transfer to the offspring all the cultural characteristics and properties that were inherent in the parent plant.

For the procedure, planting material is harvested in the second half of winter from the most developed and healthy flowers. It is not recommended to cut the green stems, since their reproduction is characterized by a low yield of rooted material (up to 90% of the cuttings rot.) It should be preferred lignified cuttings.

The pruner or knife should be sharply sharpened and disinfected with alcohol. Cut the cuttings under a curved slope, about 15 cm long, on each of them there should be 2-3 sheets and several internodes.

The upper part of the cuttings is removed at a right angle, and the foliage at the bottom of the delenium is cut to reduce the risk of rotting. The remaining leaves are shortened by a third. After this, cuttings are placed for a few hours in a solution of any root-stimulator (IMC, Zircon, Epin-Extra) so that only the lower part of the planting material is in the liquid.

After that go directly to rooting, which is usually carried out in one of three ways.

      Rooting in water

A container with high walls (ideally made of tinted glass) is filled with heated water from the aqueduct, which lasts about two days for chlorine to erode. It is advisable to dissolve some amount of bone meal or activated charcoal in the liquid. After that, planting material is placed in the water. From above the container is covered with a plastic bag and fixed with an elastic band. Instead of a package, glass jars are allowed.

The resulting improvised greenhouse is determined in the room, the temperature in which must constantly be kept at about +24 degrees. The design should be regularly disassembled, airing the plants and removing condensate from the package, which can cause the death of the cuttings.

Usually after 1-1.5 months a significant amount of roots is formed on the lower part of the delenok. However, such a root system is still not powerful enough, so planting plants in open ground is set aside until the roots are about 5 cm long.

      Growing in soil

In this case, the reproduction of hibiscus takes place in a pot of about 0.2-0.5 liters. Before starting the procedure, the container is disinfected by rinsing it in boiling water. Then the bottom of the pot is filled with drainage material, which is used as a mixture of sand, charcoal and crushed bricks. It also needs to be disinfected.

The following materials may be used as soil:

    • store soil;
    • river sand, turf and leaf land in the ratio (2: 1: 1).

In the latter case, potassium permanganate is dissolved in boiling water and poured into the mixture to destroy pathogens. The pot is filled with soil in half, wet river sand is poured on top with a layer of 2 cm. Cuttings at a small angle are placed in this substrate.

Next, the container is covered with a plastic bag to create greenhouse conditions and placed in a warm place. Irrigation is carried out as the substrate dries. We should not forget about regular airing and removal of condensate. In order for the cuttings to root, it usually takes about 2 months.

      Peat tablets

You must first prepare the required number of plastic cups of 300 ml each. They put a little clay as a drainage, followed by a peat tablet placed in a container and filled with cool boiled water. When the tablet swells, the cuttings are placed inside, deepening 2 cm. The glass is covered with a plastic bag and placed in a warm place, but not under the sun's rays. Care is the same as in the previous two cases.

The first roots usually appear after 2-3 months - they are visually distinguishable if the cup is transparent. When the root system almost completely fills the container, it is allowed to repot the hibiscus in open ground.

      Seed propagation

In order to carry out the cultivation of Chinese roses in this way, you must first conduct preparatory activities.

Seed material for 12 hours is placed in water with the addition of a root formation stimulator. The dosage is indicated on the product packaging. After that, wash the seeds and process them with potassium permanganate solution.

Seed material is placed in a thin layer on the surface of the soil substrate and sprinkled on top of a small amount of moistened sand. After that, the crops should be carefully watered with a spray gun. The seeds are covered with foil and put the pot in a room with a constant temperature of about +25 degrees. Regular checks should be made to ensure that the soil does not dry out and is not too wet.

As soon as the seedlings appear above the surface of the soil mixture, the box is moved closer to the light source so that the plants do not grow elongated. It is desirable to reduce the ambient temperature by 2-3 degrees.

When 2-3 true leaves are formed on plants, seedlings need to be pickled and transplanted into a soil that is lighter in composition. In this case, the root system is slightly shortened, and the plant is placed so that the foliage does not touch the ground. ATin spring, in March or April, hibiscus can be rooted in open ground.

      Dividing bush

Only those plants that in the previous season formed at least two shoots are allowed to reproduce.

The bush is carefully dug and removed from the ground in order not to damage the root system. After that, the shoots are separated from each other with a sharp knife so that each of them contains a part of the roots.

If the stem has broken off, it can be allowed into reproduction, provided that the roots are left at the base.If there are 10 or more stalks on the mother plant and they are difficult to separate, it is allowed to leave 2-3 shoots on each delenka.

After that, excessively damaged roots are pruned and shoots are placed in previously prepared planting holes. In each of them pour half a bucket of raw compost or humus, which is thoroughly mixed with the soil.

If it is not possible to plant the plants immediately after dividing, it is recommended to shed them abundantly with water and prikopat in the old place. Wet delenki can be wrapped in plastic bags and put in a cold room. They should be checked daily and, if necessary, further moisten the soil. In this state, hibiscus can be stored for about two weeks.

      Graft

This method is most often used for propagation of varietal Chinese roses.

      Budding

The considered method is used when the thickness of the stock is 6-8 mm. On it make an incision along the length of 2-3 cm, and on top - another transverse incision of smaller length. At the exit should get a shape in the shape of the letter "T". Optimally make an incision under the actively developing lateral stem.Blade on the incision gently bend the bark.

On the propagated plant they find a powerful kidney that is ready to start growing and cut it, capturing a narrow shield 2-3 cm long. about the success of the procedure. In addition, it is convenient to hold the shield for it during vaccination. The kidney is inserted into the cut on the stock and firmly fixed with a transparent film.

If, after two weeks, the stalk remained as green or fell off, the kidney took root, the vaccination was carried out successfully. If the petiole dried and did not fall, then the peephole died. The design is dismantled, and the stock can be reused for reproduction.

      Graft Splitting

The stock is cut at the required height, and the place of the cut is split in the center by a sharply sharpened knife. In the resulting cleft is placed the stalk from the propagated plant, which is wedged at the base. It is necessary that at least one side coincide cambial layers. Breeding place tightly tied with a rag.

The procedure is carried out from mid-spring to the beginning of autumn, while the stock is actively growing.  The stock and the scion must be healthy. Reproduction proceeds faster with a sufficient level of illumination. After vaccination is complete, water the hibiscus.

This information will allow you to learn how to reproduce hibiscus, depending on the method and type of plant - garden or indoor.

Incredibly popular in Hawaii, hibiscus is called the flower of love and the flower of beautiful women. On holidays, Malaysian women rush to decorate their hair, and an unusually wide range of shades perfectly emphasizes the color of luxurious curls. In our latitudes, this plant can be grown both in the garden in the open field and at home. The following information will let you know how the hibiscus reproduces, depending on whether it is a home flower or a garden one.

Features of indoor hibiscus

If you dream of a beautiful plant, but do not have enough experience in the cultivation of potted flowers, you should look at the hibiscus room, because it is very unpretentious, despite its excellent decorative properties. This culture copes well with temperature changes, and with insufficient lighting, and even with insidious drafts. Even if the watering is not regular, the flower and it will survive. The unpretentiousness of indoor hibiscus allows you to install it in the corridors and halls of various institutions, living rooms and office rooms.

Room hibiscus is also called a Chinese rose, because the petals of its flowers are so motley and beautiful that they resemble a real rose. There are varieties with white, yellow, pink, red or mixed color. There are varieties with purple, blue flowers with black splashes. Their diameter can reach 30 cm, depending on the variety. These flowers do not give aroma, but it is beautiful to bloom from spring to autumn.

How to propagate indoor hibiscus?

Room hibiscus can be propagated in two ways - cuttings and seeds. The latter method is less preferable for beginners, because in this case too much and only the one engaged in the selection of indoor plants can cope with the process. Cutting, in turn, has its advantages:

  • This method of reproduction allows you to save all varietal characteristics that possesses the parent plant.
  • Cutting allows you to achieve flowering in the first year.

How to propagate indoor hibiscus? Let’s proceed with the step-by-step process:

  1. Prepare several young cuttings and place them in water. It is better to choose a container of dark glass.
  2. After placing the cutting in the pot, cover it with a bag or glass jar, increasing the humidity and creating the effect of a greenhouse.
  3. Track the appearance of the first roots, then prepare a soil mixture with a high content of peat: two parts of humus, part of the leaf earth, part of the sand and part of the sod land. You can add to the mixture of sphagnum moss. Also prepare a pot with a diameter of 9 cm, no more.
  4. Replant the stem that has taken root, water the plant and choose a well-lit place for it.

To correct the inaccurate appearance of the flower in the period of active growth, cut it and form a beautiful shape of a shrub. The procedure should be carried out after the flowering of the Chinese rose in the fall, since only on the shoots older than three months should buds form. If pruning is too early - in May, the hibiscus will not bloom, because the shoots will be too young. By the way, you can safely cut off the flower in question, because it tolerates this process perfectly and becomes more lush and thick. During pruning and shrub formation, remember to remove infected and damaged branches parallel to the main trunk.

Hibiscus garden

Hibiscus garden, as compared with indoor, requires more care. Good lighting is key to growing well. This culture does not tolerate shade, because lush flowering will provide a large amount of ultraviolet radiation. Syrian hibiscus goes well with different varieties of roses in the garden. In nature, this plant is found mainly on the islands of Polynesia, in Western and South Asia, as well as in China and other regions with a tropical climate.

Most species have large, elegant flowers, the size of which can even reach a soccer ball. Some species differ in color, shape, size of the flower and the plant itself. Among the variety of life forms distinguish herbaceous plants, shrubs, dwarf shrubs, as well as small ornamental trees. Among the varieties - hibiscus marsh, trifoliate, volatile, Chinese, grassy hibiscus, frost-resistant. All varieties have exotic and very attractive flowering with a terry or simple texture. Terry varieties more favorably tolerate wintering. Among the shades the most popular are: white, dark red, yellow, purple, magenta, magenta and crimson. Two-tone variations can also be found.

The height of the shrub does not usually exceed 1.5 m, the forms are quite compact. Many recommend planting lavender around this plant so that its smell protects the Chinese rose from insects and aphids. The soil should be nutritious and well drained, the land on which roses are grown is well suited. Reinforced watering should be avoided, but in the summer it should be done daily. Garden fertilizers with a high content of phosphorus should be made during the flowering period. Apply potash fertilizer in the fall so that the plant can easily survive the winter.

Propagation by cuttings is the most popular, but it can also be grown from seed. Disembarking takes place in spring, when the land warms up sufficiently after night frost.

Seed propagation

For reproduction by seeds, the period from January to March is suitable. Focus on the next process.

  1. Soak the seeds for half an hour in a solution of potassium permanganate and then in the solution of Hellene for a day. The material should be lightly covered.
  2. Sow the seeds in peat containers and place them in a warm place under the glass. Provide a temperature of 25-27 degrees, you can arrange the lower heating.
  3. Ventilate containers regularly, moisten the soil and remove condensate.
  4. When the first leaves appear, plant seedlings in different pots.
  5. Sprouts should not be pulled out, with a lack of light, provide artificial lighting.
  6. In mid-May, plant seedlings in open ground. If the specimens are strong, you can immediately drop them to a permanent place. For the weaker, select the school bed and plant at a distance of half a meter.
  7. For 3-4 year seedlings begin to bloom and bear fruit. Self-seeding is also a breeding method if the plant is not a hybrid.

Cuttings

For propagation by cuttings, adhere to the following plan.

  1. Cut the young cuttings of plants in the summer, they should have two or three internodes. Use a growth stimulator to process the lower slices.
  2. Plant the shoots in greenhouses with bottom heating. The substrate must be peaty.
  3. Within a month, the plant will take root and then you need to transplant it into pots with the following mixture: peat, leaf soil, sand and turf ground in equal parts.
  4. Ensure regular watering.
  5. Pinch new shoots when they grow up to stimulate tillering.
  6. Replant the flower in the open ground when the bush is formed.

With proper care, grafting provides flowering culture in the first year after planting in open ground. Experienced growers are capable of rooting cuttings in water, and not in the ground. If you want the garden hibiscus to please and surprise you with its forms and lush flowering, ensure that it is pruned correctly every spring, so that the young shoots quickly gain strength and a lush color appears on them. Pruning requires the removal of diseased and damaged branches. It is recommended to form a shtambov tree so that the shrub is particularly attractive. To do this, get rid of the side branches, taking into account the desired height of the garden hibiscus. Next, trim the top of the plant so that the side branches develop more actively.

In the warm regions of the country, hibiscus develops most successfully, it is used to form flower compositions, creating a pyramidal, spherical or cubic crown shape. The flower is compact, so it can be grown not only in the open field, but also on the terrace, balcony, in the winter garden, at home. Despite the short lifespan of flowers, which is a distinctive feature of hibiscus, new flowers appear on the site of fallen very quickly. If the drying of flowers is abundant, it is necessary to ensure more frequent watering.

If the harsh climate does not allow you to acquire such a plant, you can still plant it, but for the winter you will need to dig a bush and move it to a house or basement with good lighting. Flowering can continue under such conditions even in winter. In other cases, hibiscus transplantation is required only after 20 years.

Hibiscus flowers are quite common in indoor floriculture. They are not capricious, they bloom even in a darkened room, on the north windows and are very decorative. There are more than 300 species of hibiscus. These flowers come from the tropics and belong to the family of Malvaceae.

The most popular type is Chinese hibiscus. It is also called the “Chinese rose”. Often this flower is associated with large trees that grow in offices and various government agencies - they are called "grandmother's flower" or "rosewood."

Flowers in large specimens are usually red or pink, simple or double, leaves are wide, triangular in shape. Modern varieties of this plant are compact bushes with flowers of various colors. Flower growers call them “Dutch” because they are mostly shipped from Holland.

Some varieties of "Dutch" hibiscus:

  • Adonicus Pearl - white non-double flowers with red center,
  • Duet - large light orange flowers with a corrugated edge,
  • El Capitolio (Tequila Sunrise, Sport of Sport, Bloody Mary) - three unusual hibiscus varieties with cascading flowers of yellow, orange and red,
  • Koenig - terry flower of lemon color,
  • Premiere is a thick scarlet round flower.

"Florida" hibiscus is rather a popular name for the Chinese species, with flowers of unusual colors of a very large size (with a palm, or even more). They are also called "varietal". They are considered capricious in care and are distributed mainly through collectors. In addition, Florida hibiscus is very expensive.

Some varieties of Florida hibiscus:

  • Belle du Jour - a pink flower with a transition to burgundy,
  • Daddy`s Angel - light pink petals with a white center,
  • Dragon`s Heart is a purple-scarlet velvet flower with light streaks,

Okra, okra- edible type of hibiscus, which can be grown on the balcony. Its fruits resemble fingers, because it is also called "ladies fingers."

Marsh hibiscus  - shrub with large leaves, quite rare in indoor floriculture, but this species is often planted in open ground. The flowers are very large (some hybrids can be two palms in size), of various shades: from white to burgundy.

Hibiscus sabdarifa- used for making tea Karkade.

Syrian hibiscus: in the south it is grown in open ground as an ornamental shrub. Flowers resemble mallow, come in different colors: from white to purple. This plant can be grown in room conditions, given that it is deciduous shrubs. Caring for him is the same as for the rest of the flowers of this kind, but sometimes he needs to help throw off the foliage, otherwise new leaves in the spring will not be able to grow, and old ones will be skinny and ugly.

Hibiscus love abundant watering and do not tolerate overdrying earthen coma - then they instantly wilt leaves. But they also do not like the gulf, plants may die from an excess of moisture. In winter, watering is reduced. Water in the pan is better not to leave. Acceptable temperature content of the flower from 7 to 30 degrees, but in extreme heat it should be removed in the shade. For planting flower buds, the plant needs a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius.

With a bright arrangement, hibiscus bloom much better than in the shade. These plants are able to withstand even direct sunlight, they are even desirable for flowering (about 5 hours a day). They can bloom all year round if there is enough light, but buds are picked up and away from the light source (usually only 1-2). In classical Chinese hibiscus, the flower lasts only 1 day, but in the Florida hybrid it can hold up to 5, depending on the variety.

As for Florida hibiscus - it is important for them to adjust the watering. Slightly need to water when the upper leaves become a little soft. Do not wait for the loss of turgor. This view is better to dry out than pour. With overflow, it can get dropsy.

It is useful to bathe hibiscus under a hot shower - this event will be a good prevention of the appearance. It is also good to spray the leaves often, or you can do it with watering every week using a third of the recommended fertilizer concentration.

Hibiscus can often suffer from various diseases or pests. How to cope with them, tell.

How to transplant hibiscus

In care of classical and Dutch varieties there is nothing difficult. It happens that the latter are sold with "plastic" leaves and in the transport ground, but if they are transplanted into good soil and wait a bit, then the new foliage will already be alive and healthy. It is better to do this two weeks after the purchase, when the plant is acclimatized. The pot for transplantation is chosen depending on the content: if the apartment is hot and the earth dries out very quickly, then the container needs more, dark and cool - less.
Transplanting indoor hibiscus Freshly acquired Dutch hibiscus is better to transplant into a slightly larger container, because they are often overfed with flowering stimulants. Such a measure will help them quickly cope with chemistry. Before transplanting plants, it is recommended to soak in.

Soil for hibiscus  take breathable. Purchased peat-based mixtures are not very suitable for hibiscuses, they need nutritious land, therefore it is better to prepare the substrate yourself. Often for this purpose they use commercial soil for roses, adding vermiculite, perlite and dry fertilizers to it. Substrate should be slightly acidic. Hibiscus should be regularly fed complex fertilizers, choosing those with less phosphorus and a lot of potassium.

How to trim a hibiscus room

Some Dutch hibiscus grow in a compact bush, and if you start pinching or cutting, they grow long branches that look ugly. But pinching stimulates flowering, because the buds appear only on new branches. Most species respond well to this event, give more shoots and look much more accurate. Also, this method is used to give the crown the desired shape. You can form hibiscus in the form of a stem tree.   Pruning hibiscus and the formation of the crown Large varieties are cut every spring, shortening the branches by a third of the length. Also remove twisted and dry shoots. Sometimes, if required, pruning is repeated in the fall. It is better to make an incision above the bud, which looks outward, then new shoots will not grow inside the crown. Rooted cuttings consisting of one trunk, also pinch to stimulate the formation of lateral twigs.

How to propagate hibiscus? Such a question is asked by all novice flower growers. After spring pruning, the remaining twigs can be rooted in the ground under the bag or in the water. Good result gives, perlite and peat tablets. In this case, it is desirable to remove most of the leaves, and too large to cut half. Trying to multiply a dying plant in this way is a useless exercise. But you can try to graft such a stalk onto another hibiscus “in a row”.
Indoor hibiscus cutting Rooting of Florida hibiscus is somewhat more complicated: there are different ways, but often success depends on the particular variety. The complexity of breeding varietal hybrids affects their value.

Growing hibiscus from seed

Hibiscus seeds do not lose their germination for 6 years. Sow better in spring. Surface sowing in a light wet substrate. Until the appearance of two true leaves, seedlings are kept under the film. The ideal temperature is 25–27 degrees. Especially well reproduced in this way Syrian hibiscus. Seeds sprout together and quickly, rarely rot. The plant blooms three years after sowing.
