If you want to grow in your apartment some exotic plant, then choose pineapple for growing. Growing pineapple at home is easy. And the result will exceed all your expectations. After 3-4 years you can get fragrant fruit.

Pineapple preparation for planting

For planting, you can use the top of the pineapple - crest. If you buy a pineapple specifically for planting, then pay attention to the fruit itself, and to the tuft. First of all, the tuft should not be frostbitten. Most often, winter pineapples have already been in the cold. Therefore, for breeding pineapples are best suited, bought in the summer or early autumn. Choose pineapple on the topknot. It must be intact. The inner leaves should be green, juicy.

Very gently we separate the crest from the stem with the sharp knife in the place where they join. We try not to hurt the pulp. We remove 3-4 rows of lower leaves, so that the “stump” is released approximately to a height of 1 cm.

There are 2 ways to handle the slice:

1 way:  The crest is simply dried in a vertical position for 2-3 weeks. During this time, the slice heals and the maximum amount of nutrients moves to the root formation zone.

2 way:  The cut of the tuft is treated with a pink solution of potassium permanganate, then the cut is covered with ash and dried for 5-6 hours.

Preparation of substrate for growing pineapple

1 view:

Prepare the following mixture: we take 3 parts of sod land, 2 parts of leafy land, 2 parts of top peat, 2 parts of birch sawdust, 1 part of coarse sand. All thoroughly mixed. The mixture is calcined in the oven or steamed.

2 view:

Prepare the main mixture of 1 part of sod land, 2 parts of leaf humus, 1 part of sand, 1 part of peat. Additionally, for the top layer of 3 cm, we prepare a mixture of sand and sheet humus in the same ratio.

3 view:

We take in equal parts large river sand and peat. A few days before planting, this substrate should be plentifully shed with boiling water. This procedure disinfects the substrate and gives it the necessary moisture.

4 kind:

You can simply buy in a specialized store substrate for bromeliads, which include pineapple. In general, the soil for planting pineapple should be well permeable to water and air, with an acidic pH of 4-5.

Preparing capacity for planting pineapple

Capacity select small. Its diameter should be slightly larger than the size of the tuft. The volume of the tank should be no more than 0.6 liters. You can choose a regular flower pot of suitable size. At the bottom of the pot lay the drainage layer of 2-3 cm. Suitable pebbles or karamzit. Then we lay the soil substrate, not getting 1.5-2 cm to the edges of the pot.

How to plant a pineapple

In the center of the pot we dig a hole a little more than a tuft with a diameter, the depth of the hole is 2-2.5 cm. We put some charcoal in the hole. This will prevent the edges of the outlet from rotting. Tuft insert into the fossa. At the edges of the pot we dig in a few sticks, 2-4, and we tie a tuft to them with threads, for fastening. Spray the ground and tuft with water and cover with a glass jar, plastic bottle or plastic bag cap. Put the pot in a warm, bright place, but not under direct sunlight.

The optimum temperature for rooting is 25-27 degrees. In winter, the pot can be put directly on the battery, putting a plate under it. Rooting occurs after 1.5-2 months. Its sign is the appearance of new leaves. "Mini-greenhouse" can be removed after 2 months.

Pineapple Care at Home

Pineapple - light-loving plant. Therefore, the optimum temperature for growing pineapple in the summer - 28-30 degrees, at least - 25 degrees. In winter, the temperature should be maintained at a level of 22-24 degrees, a minimum of 18 degrees. If this minimum is reached, the plant will simply die. Hypercooling of the root system can also lead to the death of a plant. Therefore, you can not put a pot with pineapple on a cold window sill. A light day for growing pineapple should be 12 hours. Therefore, in winter, when there is a shortage of pineapple, the house should be illuminated with a fluorescent lamp.

Pineapple requires moderate watering. Water is used melt or rain, can be replaced with boiled or distilled water. Before watering, the water should be acidified with oxalic or citric acid to pH 5-6. Citric acid can be replaced with lemon juice. The acidity of the water can be checked using universal test litmus paper. Watering pineapple at home should only be heated to 30 degrees with water. Water must be poured into the outlet. Watering should be moderate, as over-wetting of the ground can lead to decay. Land between watering should dry out slightly. It is also necessary to frequently spray the leaves with warm water. It is useful for pineapple to have water in the axils of the lower leaves. Extra pineapple roots absorb it well.

Feeding pineapple

During the growing season, which lasts from late February to September, it is necessary to feed the pineapple every 10-15 days. The best fertilizer - infusion of cow or horse manure. Useful complex fertilizer type "Azalea". It must be made in the amount of two times smaller than that required by other plants. Be sure to water or sprinkle pineapple solution of ferrous sulfate 1 or 2 times a month. It is prepared at the rate of 1 g per 1 liter of water. It is also acidified. It is strongly recommended not to feed pineapple with alkaline fertilizers, such as lime or wood ash.

Pineapple Transplant

Pineapple at home must be replanted every year. The roots of the plant should not be allowed to grow strongly. Every year the size of the pot should increase slightly. Pineapple root system is small. For an adult plant, a pot of 3-4 liters is enough. For transplant using the method of transshipment. Spend it very carefully, trying not to destroy the coma of the earth. The depth of the root collar is increased by 0.5 cm.

Bloom stimulation

Pineapple at home with proper care may bloom in 3-4 years. By this time, the length of the leaves of pineapple reaches already 80-90 cm, and the diameter of the rosette is 10 cm. But sometimes the pineapple needs to be made to bloom. There are several ways to stimulate flowering.

1 way:

The easiest stimulant is ethylene. To obtain it, dissolve 1 teaspoon of calcium carbide (it is used for gas welding) in 0.5 liter of water. Close the can and insist for 24 hours. After that, the separated liquid is drained, leaving a precipitate and impurities. 50 g of this solution is poured into the outlet center daily for a week. After such stimulation flowering is guaranteed in a month and a half.

2 way:

Fumigation. On the plant we wear a plastic bag. At the pot for 10 minutes, put a few lit cigarettes or smoking coal. Be careful to comply with fire safety measures. Fumigation is carried out 2-3 times in 7-10 days. After 2-2.5 months pineapple blooms.

3 way:

Put the pot in a large plastic bag. There we put 3-4 ripe apples or tomatoes. This method is simple, but does not always lead to flowering.

Pineapple flowering and fruiting

Flowering lasts about 2 weeks. As soon as the flowers appeared, we replace the fertilizing with organic with a fertilizer with a complex of mineral fertilizers. Good "Kemira", "Agricola" or other fertilizers for flower crops. The fruit ripens in 5-7 months. The main indicator of maturity is a strong sweet smell and sufficient fruit weight. At home, pineapples can reach 0.3 - 1.5 kg.

At the base of an adult plant, lateral layers - “children” often appear. Such babies can be up to 20. They can be seated in the same way as tuft. Over time, you can get a real pineapple plantation for your joy and the envy of your friends.

Pineapple is an exotic fruit that can be grown on your balcony. Growing pineapple at home is a simple and very interesting exercise.

Pineapple does not have seeds, so for growing it is necessary to take its socket, i.e. top green part. When choosing a pineapple, you need to pay attention to the stem and the condition of the tuft. It is very important that the fruit is not frozen, otherwise it will simply not be suitable for planting. Therefore, the purchase of pineapple is best to postpone the summer season. The socket itself should not be lethargic and even more damaged.

So, with a sharp knife cut off the socket from the seed, while trying not to hurt the flesh. We wash it in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and sprinkle it with ash. After 5-6 hours, when the socket dries, it can be planted.

Now you need to prepare the container. Cultivation is possible if you have prepared a flower pot for this, which should be no more than 0.6 l. In the pot must be present a small hole for water flow during watering. At the bottom of the pot lay out a layer of drainage, 2-3 cm thick, and then the earthen mixture, which consists of sod land, humus from leaves, coarse sand and peat. Top we pour a mixture of humus from the leaves and sand in equal proportions about 3 cm thick. In the middle of the pot we dig a small hole 2 cm. We fall asleep into it to prevent the tip of the socket from rotting. We plant it and we well tamp with our fingers at the base of the cutting. Along the edges of the pot, we install several sticks, to which we fasten a rosette with ropes. Next, spray it on top with water and cover with a plastic cap or made from a plastic bottle. We put the pot in a warm and well-lit place, but in no case in the sun.

The temperature for better rooting of the outlet should be 25-27ºС. In the winter season, in order to grow pineapple at home was successful, the maintenance required was successful, the maintenance of the same temperature as in summer is required. To do this, put a board on the battery and put a pot of pineapple on it.

The roots will begin to germinate after a month and a half, then the first leaves will appear. The polyethylene cap can be removed after two months, after fully rooting the outlet.

Annually, the plant should be transplanted into larger pots. This should be done by transshipment, ensuring that the lump of earth does not collapse. The root system is immersed no more than half a centimeter. Pineapple roots are small, so even an adult plant should be kept in 3-4 liter containers. The substrate is the same as for rooting.

Growing pineapple in an apartment means keeping it on a sunny balcony while protecting against rain. Observing a certain temperature is a very important point for the growth of pineapple. In summer, the temperature should be 28-30 ºС, and in winter the most optimal temperature will be 22-24 ºС. If the temperature in the room drops below 18 ºС, the plant will no longer grow and may die.

When watering pineapple is better to choose rain or melt water. If the cultivation of pineapple at home requires, you need to stock up on such water, as it is extremely useful for this plant. In addition, it can be stored for a long time. You can, of course, be watered with boiled water, after having acidified it with citric acid, because without the "acidity" in the soil the pineapple grows worse.

When all the above recommendations are implemented, the pineapple should start to bear fruit after 3 years from the time of planting. At this time, its height will already reach 80-90 cm. If an adult pineapple does not bloom for a long time, you can fumigate it with any kind of smoke. We put a plastic bag on the plant and put 2-3 steaming coals near the pot. So we make from 2 to 3 times, observing the weekly interval. After 2-2.5 months, inflorescences should appear, and after 3.5-4 months, fruits should appear.

Mature fruit weighs from 0.3 g to 1 kg. To grow pineapple at home requires patience and regular care. And then your "green pet" will delight you with tasty and juicy fruits.

Fans successfully grow at home a wide variety of plants, including exotic ones. Not too difficult to grow pineapple. It is only necessary to properly prepare and plant its green top, and then provide the plant with appropriate care. And to get it right, it’s better to follow step-by-step instructions with videos and photos.

How to grow pineapple at home

Flowering or fruiting pineapple looks very unusual in the interior. Its appearance causes admiration and even some surprise. Under normal home conditions, it is not very common, although it may be interesting for many gardeners to try growing it. With proper care, this exotic plant takes root well in the apartment. Under favorable conditions, after 2.5-3 years it may bloom and start fruiting.

For planting pineapple in the conditions of the apartment use the green top of the fruit. For an experienced grower, in principle, there is nothing difficult in this process. You just need to root the apical part of the plant. But in order to attempt to plant an exotic plant accurately crowned with success, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • correct fetal selection;
  • careful preparation of planting material;
  • planting a green top in the ground.

With good care, pineapple can produce fruit at home.

If done correctly, the tip will take root in the ground. Later, when the plant takes root, it will need to be provided with appropriate care so that it grows and develops normally. Under favorable conditions for a pineapple, it will bloom in several years and will give fruit. They are edible, only will be smaller in size than the plants that are in their natural environment.

Fetal selection for planting

Great importance for the successful planting of pineapple is the correct choice of the fruit. It should be ripe, without rot and damage. Unripe or overripe fruits are not suitable for planting. But special attention should be paid to the green top of the pineapple, because it is used for rooting.

Apical part should be strong and healthy, without any signs of decay, and the leaves on it - fresh, rich green color, without brown spots. If the foliage on a fetus is sluggish or starts to dry out, then it is better to put aside such fruit and choose another, healthier one.

Attention! For planting pineapple is preferable to use fruits purchased in spring or summer. Those that are bought in wintertime may turn frostbitten, and such planting material is no longer suitable for growing.

If you have any doubts when choosing a pineapple for planting, it is better to buy two fruits at once, but take them in different stores. So the likelihood that at least one of them will be fit will be much higher. And many flower growers do just that, rooting two tops at once, on the basis that if not both, then one will surely take root.

Preparing pineapple toroot

After buying a pineapple, the fruit itself can be used for its intended purpose, that is, to eat. For rooting, you only need its tip with leaves. It must be carefully separated from the fetus itself. This can be done in one of two ways:

Pineapple Top for Planting

  • unscrew the top;
  • cut the apical part of the fruit.

If the pineapple is ripe, the apical part gets out quite easily. To do this, you need to take with one hand the fruit itself, and with the other - to clasp its green top and start twisting it. Keep it necessary for a place closer to the base, and not for the leaves, so as not to damage them. Too much effort when unscrewing can damage the apical part. Therefore, if this way it is impossible to separate it from the fetus, it is better to act differently - cut the green tip.

To cut the top, use a sharp knife, holding it at a 45 degree angle. Carefully separating it from the fruit with the tool, then you need to carefully peel off the flesh, otherwise the tip may fade in the future. Only it is necessary to act extremely carefully so as not to accidentally damage the points on it, from which the roots will then grow. With both methods of separation of the apex, then the lower leaves will need to be removed by about 3-4 cm.

The apical part prepared in this way is rooted more often in warm and separated water, using a suitable container, preferably of dark glass. The top is immersed in the liquid of the exposed part, exposing the container with the plant in a warm and well-lit place, but not in the sun. Water is changed regularly, every 2-3 days. Within a few days, the roots should appear. When they grow up to 2-3 mm, the plant can be planted in the ground.

Landing

For planting the top you need to take a large enough container with a height of 20-30 cm and a diameter of about 30-35 cm. If there is no such pot at hand, you can land the top first in a smaller capacity, and only then, as the plant grows, move it to more appropriate. At the bottom you need to lay out the drainage layer of expanded clay or pebbles, and on top of it already fill the pot with nutrient soil, leaving some distance to the edge.

Pineapple Planting Stages

For moistening and additional disinfection, it is better to shed the soil well with boiling water or a solution of potassium permanganate. About a day or two after that, pineapple will be planted in such a prepared soil.

Council For planting, you can use ready-made soil for bromeliads, or prepare the soil for the pineapple yourself from humus, peat and river sand in equal proportions.

In a properly prepared soil, make the hole a little larger than the stalk of the top of the pineapple, lower it over the lower leaves and press down the soil around it. To protect the roots from rotting into the hole, you can additionally add a little ash or crushed coal. The plant is placed in a warm, lighted place, avoiding direct sunlight. At a temperature of 25-27 degrees, the tip will take root in the ground within 1.5-2 months.

In summer, the pineapple can be placed on the balcony, protected from rain. In the autumn and in the winter it is usually kept on the windowsill or near the window. But you need to pay attention to the fact that he was not in the draft. Plant care will consist in regular watering, but without a strong overwetting of the soil, spraying and wiping the leaves from dust, adding supplements every 1-2 months.

A blooming pineapple or a plant with a fruit set in it looks very beautiful in the house. It can be a real decoration of any flower collection. Even a novice grower will be able to grow it independently from the green top, because in this process there are no big difficulties, especially if you act according to the instructions.

this amazing tropical plant hails from the tropics of South America.  In Europe, it began to grow in greenhouses, creating the necessary climate conditions.

But with a little effort, growing pineapple can be done even at home. And after a while this interesting plant will amaze us with its appearance and fruits.

Pineapple: plant description

it is a herbaceous plant with a stem in its center. In the center of the stem, at the top - inflorescence, which after fertilization turns into fertility.

Outwardly, it can be seen that separate parts of the seed berries grow together into one fruit - pineapple. The stem is surrounded by a rosette - fleshy and thick leaves.

Pineapple fruit has an oval, cylindrical shape, consists of several numerous small parts fused together. At the top there is a rosette of leaves.

The dense scaly sheath of a ripe fruit has a dark green, yellow, brown, or even reddish tint. Inside the fruit - bright yellow flesh. It has a pleasant taste and good aroma. The ripened fruits of pineapple reach a weight of 4-5 kg.

What conditions does pineapple need for successful growth?

Pineapple, when grown at home, is very picky about the conditions that will be created for its successful ripening. Since it is a tropical plant, it is extremely important to maintain proper lighting, temperature and humidity.

Lighting

Pineapple must be at least 6 hours a day, regardless of the time of year, be in a well-lit place. In summer, the plant can be taken out on the balcony or in the garden, in a moderately lit place. In the cold season, the pineapple must be kept on the south side, in order to obtain even sunlight.

The plant should not be rotated, because it can slow growth, it is enough and one-sided lighting. If the time of year and weather conditions do not allow to provide sunlight, then the pineapple can be highlighted with additional lighting - fluorescent lamps.  Only it is worth considering that when using lamps pineapple should receive coverage of at least 8 hours a day.

Air temperature and humidity

Pineapple is very afraid of the cold. If in the summer it is quite satisfied with the ambient temperature, then during the winter time it is worthwhile to foresee methods for preserving heat in the room and soil of the plant. It should not be kept on a cold floor or windowsill, in winter it is best to maintain a soil temperature of 18 - 21 ° C, the maximum temperature for the winter period is 27 ° C.

The plant should not be kept near the batteries and heaters, it is also necessary to provide for the absence of drafts. To maintain moisture, you must use a pot with wet drainage. You can spray the water around the plant, the leaves should not be sprayed, as water can accumulate inside the outlet and cause them to rot. They should be wiped from dust with a damp cloth.

How to plant a pineapple

Before you plant a pineapple at home, it is worth getting a ripe, fresh and healthy fruit for a start.

A good pineapple fruit should:

  1. Have a light sweet aroma.
  2. Have no external damage, the color should be uniform, golden brown.
  3. To the touch pineapple should be elastic. If the fruit is soft, then this means that it is overripe. If the fruit is hard, then, on the contrary, immature.
  4. The leaves at the top must be fresh, green with slightly dried edges - this is an important sign of the maturity of the fruit. If there are gray spots, it means that the leaves are damaged by the insects, and the use of such a fruit should be discarded.

Observing the following rules, we will be able to grow a good pineapple at home, which will delight us with its unusual look and will bear fruit in the future.

Separation of the tuft of fruit

To separate the crown of leaves from pineapple can be quite simple. It is necessary to clasp all the leaves with your hand and turn it very carefully, as if unscrewing the bottle cap. If everything worked out correctly, you should have in your hand a crown of leaves with a small stem below.

If you are worried that you may not be able to do everything carefully, you should use a knife. Knife need to cut off the top crown of pineapple and cut out the whole pulp to prevent rotting.

Preparing the crown for root germination

It is necessary to remove a few lower leaves with a knife to expose the trunk, from which we will grow roots. After trimming the leaves and cleaning the trunk, leave our future pineapple to dry for a couple of days to prevent the scars and leaves from rotting after pruning.

Then the dried crown should be placed in a transparent dish with water so that it covers the bare trunk of our plant. Water should be at room temperature. Place the dishes in a bright place on the windowsill. It is necessary to closely monitor the water level, periodically changing the water.   If done correctly, the pineapple will take root in 3 - 4 weeks.

Planting pineapple in the ground

After the roots have grown 3-4 cm, pineapple can be planted in the ground. For the initial planting, it is better to use a small pot with a hole for water flow, suitable in size to our crown. At the bottom of the pot stack 3-centimeter layer of drainage, you can use expanded clay.

It is necessary to fill a pot with the friable, nutritious earth. After filling the ground, it is recommended to pour hot water into the ground. After that, you can land our plant. Planting should be 5-6 cm deep, after planting it is good to pour the pineapple with warm water. You need to put the plant in a bright and warm place. Pineapple rooted for 2-3 months.

Important!  An important sign that the pineapple caught on - the emergence of new leaves.

In the future, the first leaves will wither and die off, but in their place new green shoots will begin to grow. Old leaves need to be carefully cut and removed. The grown pineapple should be watered once a week with warm water. After a year of growth, the pineapple is again transplanted into a larger pot.

You still need to put a drainage layer on the bottom, this time you can use gravel. Soil should be used from a mixture of two parts of peat, one part of river sand and three parts of natural soil. In winter, the growth of pineapple slows down, but you should not worry: with the onset of the warm period, it will begin to grow abundantly, only for this you will need to feed the soil.

Did you know?  If there is a possibility, during the primary and secondary planting of the pineapple it can be placed under a polyethylene cap for 2-3 weeks to create the conditions of a tropical climate and better plant survival.

Pineapple Care Rules

Watching our pineapple grow at home, we see that pineapple is a very thermophilic plant. It should be watered, but water should be prevented from stagnating. It also needs periodic top dressing of the soil.

Do I need to water the pineapple?

The soil in the pot with pineapple should not dry out, but the water should not stagnate. Therefore, an adult plant should be plentifully watered once a week with warm water.

If the plant is in the open air, then its leaves should be sprayed: they will absorb moisture, and the rest will evaporate. During the period of active growth, watering pineapple can be changed: water twice a week, but reduce the amount of water poured. It is best when the water passes through the drainage completely and flows out.

If there is a swamp smell in the pot or mold appears on the soil, then it should be replaced as soon as possible, otherwise the plant may die.

Important!  The pineapple root system is very small, so a 3-4-liter pot is enough for an adult plant.

Top dressing of an exotic plant

During the growing season, pineapple needs to be fed twice a month. A good fertilizer will be ordinary cow's humus. You can also make a complex of mineral fertilizers, which are sold in garden stores, but the dosage should be reduced by half, compared with other plants.

It is also necessary to spray the plant once a month with a 0.01% solution of ferrous sulfate. Alkaline fertilizers, lime and wood ash are not recommended for pineapple.

Secrets of the successful flowering of pineapple

In the natural environment, in order for the pineapple to bloom, it will take 26 months. At home, the flowering time may vary in different directions. When 16 months have passed, and the plant height will be more than 20 cm, you can count on the beginning of flowering. Pineapple blossoms according to the following description.

At the top of the trunk, a bud begins to form, it gradually rises upward on the stem that grows from the stem. A couple of months begins flowering and lasts literally two weeks. The flowers have a bright blue color. One flower opens for just one day. After it blooms, the last flower begins a period of fetal development.

The ripening period ranges from 3 to 7 months, it all depends on the growing conditions and pineapple varieties.

It may happen that the pineapple has reached the right age and has developed normally, but does not bloom; in this case, the beginning of flowering can be stimulated.   A water solution of ethylene will cope well with this task.

To prepare it, you need to take 1-2 teaspoons of calcium carbide and pour 0.5 liters of water. To maintain this solution in a closed vessel, then pour, filtering from the sediment. This solution should be made in 50-55 ml per week in the upper part of the leaves of the plant. After such stimulation, the pineapple should give a bud in 4-6 weeks. If this does not happen, it means that he has not yet matured or is sick.

Did you know?  Pineapple is a herbaceous plant, so after fruiting it will die. But leave behind a few side shoots that can be used for further cultivation.

How to deal with pests and diseases of pineapple

Growing pineapple as a houseplant, we must be prepared for the fact that it, like other plants, can be attacked by pests. Also, with the incomplete observance of the rules of pineapple care, the plant may have certain problems.

If the leaves start to dry out, it means that the plant is in a very hot or sunny place. It should be sprayed with water and rearranged to a cooler place. If the leaves begin to fade and curl up - the plant should be put on a lighter place.

If the stem of the plant rots - it is necessary to temper watering and stop it until the plant comes to its normal state.

Such pests can attack pineapple:

  • . It affects the leaves of the plant, it can be removed with a cotton swab moistened in ethyl alcohol. Also, the plant should be treated with insecticide, which can be bought in garden stores.
  • Mealy worm. Covers the leaves with a continuous film. You can remove by washing the leaves with soap and water, then treat with an emulsion of Karbofos.
  • Root worm. It affects the root system. When it is detected, it is worth stopping watering and treating the soil with insecticidal preparations.
  • Spider mite. Forms a thin web on the leaves, it must be removed with soapy water, moistened with soft water and treated with a light insecticide.
  • Orchid aphid. A small insect that lives on the upper leaves of the plant and feeds on its juice. Finding aphids, the plant must be processed "Aktellikom."
  • Honeydew. This is a sticky plaque formed by insect excretions. If it is found, the leaves should be washed with soapy water.
  • Fungal diseases. Fungi are formed by fertilizing with nitrogen. If they occur, the plant must be treated with a fungicide.

How to propagate pineapple

Pineapple can be propagated with the help of daughter shoots, which are formed after the pineapple fruiting occurs. On average, one plant produces up to five shoots. Child shoots should be separated from the main part with a knife. They must reach a height of 15-20 cm and have their own roots.
