A surprising fact is that despite the fact that fashion does not stand still, fashionable women of the whole world are ready to pay big money to return to the past for the things fashionable in the time of their mothers and grandmothers. The style of such clothes is called "vintage".

Features vintage clothing

Clothing, popular in the years 1910-1980, today bears the proud name of “vintage.” Modern vintage clothing carries the entourage of time from which it came to us. But a truly vintage thing can only be called if it was really created at the time of its popularity, and not in a factory, but by the hands of a designer.

It is worth noting that this style is only gaining popularity, and designers annually release all new collections devoted to vintage fashion. Such changes in fashion allow you to move away from the annoying glamorous outfits and similar models from glossy magazines.

There are 3 signs that determine the belonging of a thing to the vintage:

  1. A real vintage thing, wherever you get it - bought or found in your grandmother's closet, should be at least 20 years old.
  2. Only a thing created by a famous designer of that time has the right to be called vintage. And in any case, this concept does not apply to factory-made clothing of mass production.
  3. If the item was sewn before 1910, it is rightfully of a different style - retro.

Choosing a vintage wardrobe, you should not get involved in collecting all the rare things, you should approach this process more intelligently, choosing really worth things related to the desired time interval.

Vintage style combines several major subspecies:

  1. True vintage - clothes from famous designers of 1910-1980.
  2. Neovinterakt - modern clothes that mimic the aged thing 90s.
  3. Modern thing, but made with elements of vintage (accessories or lace) is called "combined vintage".
  4. Styling clothes for a certain period of time. It can be an exact replica of an antique, or a modern thing using vintage accents. One of the variants of this direction may be tailoring from vintage fabric.

Vintage 1920-1930

At this time, women of fashion were looking for inspiration in cinema, imitating movie stars. In order for a modern girl to create a similar image, you can arrange to watch a black and white movie of the past years. Key points to consider to create a star image:

  1. Dress tunic . It will look good both independently and underlined with a thin belt on the hips. Such a dress would be appropriate for both a social event and a casual wardrobe. The main thing to consider is that the material for the dress and its decoration should correspond to a specific case. For evening dresses, noble fabrics such as silk or velvet are best suited. And embroidery, sequins or beads will perfectly decorate an evening outfit. A dress made of knitwear is suitable for casual wear.
  2. A hat with narrow margins is a must-have accessory for any fashionista of the 20s. It can be decorated with a veil, feathers, flowers or have a strict classical look.
  3. Long pearl beads wrapped around the neck in 2 turns. They can simply hang down to the waist, or be tied in a small knot on the second turn.
  4. A fur scarf, or a boa, and long gloves.
  5. A pencil skirt and a blouse with a high collar with a bow-like collar.

Vintage in the 1940s

Now the soft lines are replaced by clearly defined figures, which was influenced, of course, by the military theme. This tendency manifested itself in fitted clothes, with elements borrowed from military uniforms. Popular things of the time, the reflection of which is present now, were:

  1. Jacket covering the hip line, with shoulder pads and a pronounced waistline. To him you can pick up a midi skirt - both straight and flared.
  2. Dress, flared to the bottom, reaching to the middle of the leg. You can add a belt or wear it yourself. The preferred colors of vintage fashion are polka dots and a check.

Vintage in the 50s

The fashion of this time is emphasized by the underlined sexuality, and the style itself is called pin-up. It was then that tight-fitting shirts, corsages, strapless swimsuits, and flared skirts became popular.

It was possible to emphasize the image in the style of pin-up with bright red lips and light-colored tight curls.

Most importantly, a girl of any physique can emphasize her charms thanks to this style, but the owner of magnificent forms will look especially beneficial. The main condition in order to look in the style of pin-up, discard shyness.

These things will help you recreate the flavor of the 50s:

  1. Cotton T-shirt with shoulder straps in combination with shorts and denim skirts. The colors are again in a cage, polka dot or small flower. For a beach look, a skirt with shorts can be replaced with swimwear.
  2. A scarf, twisted into a cord, and tied with a bow at the crown or an interesting bandage on naughty curls

Vintage in the 60s

Again, fashion makes a sharp turn, and completely changes direction. Now the clothes use a lot of bright colors, the sets of clothes have more and more contrasts. Sexuality and femininity recede into the background, and they were replaced by unisex.

In women's clothes, more and more features appeared in the men's wardrobe: arrows on trousers, vests, jeans and wide shirts. The hippie youth movement had a great influence on the fashion of this time. Today, to create an image that resembles a vintage 60s, you can use such combinations:

  1. Dress-trapeze bright colors, made in one color, just above the knee. You can combine it with jewelry and any shoes.
  2. You can add a regular pantsuit or a business suit with moccasins.
  3. Color blazer for classic trousers or jeans. An excellent addition to this ensemble will be a belt.

As you can see after reading this article, fashion did not stand still, and each decade underwent dramatic changes. Therefore, if you are a fan of vintage style, you have plenty to choose from. And most importantly, vintage items are so unique that it is almost impossible to find repetition, and thanks to this you will feel unique in this way.

Classic, modern, minimalism, Provence, eclecticism - each style of the interior has its own characteristic features and its own energy, distinguishing it from all others. The atmosphere, which translates the style, is hardly the most important point in creating an interior. The refined aristocracy of the past, touching, soulfulness and romance make vintage in the interior recognizable and loved by many.

Signs of vintage style in the interior

To create a true vintage style in the interior of your apartment, you need to understand what it accepts and what it absolutely does not allow. Its features are as follows:

  • natural materials in the decoration;
  • original antique furniture (early twentieth century) or artificially aged;
  • interior items with a history and traces of wear, but retaining a decent look;
  • symmetry and pairing of decor items, accessories and other details of style;
  • pastel shades, moderate and delicate; not necessarily only light, but restrained and discreet;
  • the predominance of floral motifs in the decor, wallpaper, textiles, upholstery;
  • lack of luxury in the interior, simplicity and sincerity.

Important! Despite the fact that vintage style belongs to the past, you should not confuse it with retro. The main difference between these interior styles is the time interval. Vintage - this is the beginning of the twentieth century to the 20-30s, retro - 50-60s. Also, the preference in materials is different: vintage stands for naturalness, retro allows synthetic materials.

The color scheme of the interior in vintage style

The charm of vintage style is largely due to the special color palette of the interior. Here gentle, airy colors rule: shades of blue, lilac, pink, beige, brown, pure white. Usually, the shades in unison are selected for the main selected color: blue is played up with different shades of gray-blue and white colors, pink with lilac, lilac variants, pronounced brown is complemented by delicate coffee and chocolate shades.

Materials and finishes typical for vintage interior

The decoration should be used mainly natural materials: wood, stone, metal.

The walls in the interior of vintage style are usually covered with wallpaper with a characteristic floral pattern or painted in soft colors. All walls must be decorated in the same color. Their task is to helpfully set off furnishing items and stylish accessories, but not to dominate the interior. The color of the walls can be pure white, beige, grayish, blue.

Ceiling should be plain, painted or whitewashed. The presence of cracks and some irregularities in the finish is quite an authentic nuance of vintage style. Perfect decoration of the ceiling can be. But stretch and plasterboard ceilings such an interior is strictly not accept.

For the floor is suitable natural parquet or tile, artificially aged or really old. Neither laminate nor carpet with vintage style are compatible.

Important! It is necessary to feel the measure in the deliberate "age increase" details of the vintage interior. Decorations, furniture and decor should radiate the refined simplicity of style, and shout about the need for urgent repairs.

Furniture in vintage interior

The basic requirements for vintage-style furniture are its affiliation to the beginning of the twentieth century, a noble origin and a decent look. Each piece of furniture in the interior should reflect the spirit of its time, be distinctive and interesting. The old, but thoroughbred appearance, the presence of scuffs, cracks, scratches is not something that is welcomed by the style, but even obligatory. These are not just signs of wear. This is a lifetime full of stories and experiences.

Important! Creating an interior in vintage style is a slow and expensive business. Moreover, these two parameters may not “walk as a pair,” but live separately. Found on the flea market somewhere in Austria on the occasion of the trip a stylish thing can cost a penny, and the main waste here will be the time and effort of the search. But vintage furniture made in a design studio to order will be expensive.

In the interior of the bathroom and the toilet is unusual for a modern person, which means that in a vintage style, there will be a toilet with a high tank and a bath with curved legs in the shape of lion legs. Carved cast parts, chrome or gold-plated pipes, ceramics and brass will complement the vintage style.

Every detail must be carefully thought out and chosen. It may not be in the literal sense from the beginning of the last century, but it must necessarily correspond to the stated style and have a pronounced character. Vintage in the interior implies that the main assistant in the choice should be a sense of proportion: the ultimate goal is to create a non-trivial interior completeness, not an exhibition and sale in a junk shop.

Lighting in vintage interior

For the delicate sincerity of style vintage suits dim. Soft diffused light of the main chandelier, cozy table lamps, floor lamps with flower shades are all tools for creating a vintage atmosphere in the interior. No modern spotlights, turning lights and LED lights. The materials used in the lamps are natural - wood, metal, fabric on the lampshades.

Vintage decor

The main meaning and completeness of the vintage interior give elements of decor. These include:

  1. Mirrors.
  2. Clock.
  3. Pictures in vintage or stylized frames.
  4. Vases, figurines, candlesticks.
  5. Caskets
  6. Photos on the wall and on the shelves.
  7. Napkins, bedspreads, blankets, towels and other textiles.
  8. Stylish lampshades, covers.
  9. Curtains and curtains.
  10. Screens and stuff.

The pairing and symmetry of the layout are relevant in the case of decor. The photo of the same size in frames is placed on the table, similar lace napkins are decorated with bedside tables, decorative plates, medallions and panels on the walls are arranged in pairs.

Even obvious trifles play a role in a beautiful story called “vintage style”. In this role can make:

  • long non-working typewriter, which, nevertheless, occupies a place of honor on the nightstand or secretary;
  • exquisite powder box on the dressing table;
  • a mannequin with a carelessly thrown peignoir of an old-fashioned cut;
  • pharmaceutical banks and obscure items;
  • a handful of miniature wristwatches in a beautiful tabletop vase that have long ceased to count the run of time.

Vintage style (from fr. Vintage - wine-making term, aging of wine, as well as old wine of the highest quality)   - This is a trend in fashion (both clothing and household items), the purpose of which is to try to revive the fashion trends of the past decades.

The use of the “vintage” style implies the active use of the things of the past generation (clothes, shoes, furniture, etc.) that have been restored. Moreover, the age of these things should be strictly defined: not older than 50 years, but not younger than 20. In addition, clothes, shoes, accessories in vintage style should have been fashionable during their time period.

History of style

The demand for vintage clothing appeared in the 1970s. In this period of time, due to the development of light industry, they began to produce fashionable clothes and footwear of the same size for all. Then in London, for aesthetes and bohemians, was opened first “vintage” - legendary today “”whose models cited the style of the 1930s.

But as an independent trend in fashion vintage style in clothes  was formed only in the 1990s. This new fashion trend has become today a part of modern culture. Increased interest in him is due to the fascination with vintage clothes by celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Rene Zellweger, Chloë Sevigny, (Kate Moss) and (Dita von Teese). The final confirmation of vintage clothing as a recognized phenomenon of fashion was the appearance of US First Lady Michelle Obama (Michelle Obama) in the evening dress of the 1950s by American Norman Norell at a Christmas concert in Washington in December 2010.

2 main criteria of "vintage"

  • Age  - the most important indicator. Things created by the last 20 years are modern things, and those who are over fifty years old are antiques. A "vintage" - these are things created in the time interval between the first and second.
  • Style  - clothes, shoes, accessories in the "vintage" style should fully reflect the fashionable trends of their time. For example, dress "style" or motley in the style of the 1970s.

Types of vintage

  • Genuine vintage  - it is clothing made no later than the 80s, and made famous: (Yves Saint Laurent), (Coco Chanel), (Pierre Cardin) and others.
  • Psevdovintazh or neovintage - these are things made of artificially aged fabric with the effect of "fade" and "worn". Sometimes it is possible to distinguish a real vintage from a “pseudo” pattern only by the age of the threads with which labels are sewn.
  • Vintage fabrics  - as well as clothes, are made no later than the 80s and have a pronounced stylistics of a certain period of fashion. From such a fabric, they either sew according to fully authentic old patterns (and eventually get “vintage” clothing, but which no one has ever worn), or, on the contrary, use deliberately modern styles and fabric processing methods.
  • Combined vintage  - it is clothing, in the manufacture of which, along with modern materials, genuinely vintage fabrics, parts, accessories and finishes are used.
  • Stylization "a-la vintage"  These are modern collections of designers and fashion designers, in which ideas of silhouettes, motives of drawings (in the production of fabrics), decor and cut of clothes of the past are used.

Vintage terminology

  • Mint  - this term means a thing that was not in use, a thing in perfect condition, as on the day of its creation, any traces of socks are absent (in this state vintage clothing comes across quite rarely and it is considered a great success among connoisseurs and collectors);
  • Near mint  - that is, the thing is almost not used, it may be noticeable only minor signs of wear;
  • Excellent  - a thing in excellent condition, but there are typical signs of wear due to irregular use;
  • Very good  - a thing in very good condition, it can be worn, but there are some defects (for example, stains or stubborn dirt);
  • Good  - a thing in a normal state, it can also be worn, but it is impossible to return to a perfect condition, even after repair and washing.

As always from French wine terminology (to designate the category of wine classrooms), the original vintage has firmly established itself not only as a newfangled word in the fashion industry (touchingly sitting down “glamor”), but also as a separate direction in collecting.
  And here of course you need to understand the difference. What is vintage? What is vintage style? - We will understand in detail, of course, as not all the junk is Antiques, so not all old rags and accessories are Vintage.

Vintage is first of all style in style! This is a clear and rigorous observance of the time and brand framework within a single composition - be it a beauty outfit, the interior of a house (room) or a decoupage booklet.

Vintage clothing in the first place - branded, with characteristic milestones on average a 10-year period (ideally, the smaller, the better). Those. choosing a dress in vintage style, first of all, relate its relevance to a vintage bag of the same time, be sure to have a haircut and vintage costume jewelry that doesn’t crawl out of these 5-10 years! Oh how ridiculous to the dress of the 50s are the pendant earrings of the 80s, be careful! One step, a couple of years in the history of fashion - and you are a clown, not a miss-style!

Vintage bag (suitcase, and why not?) And vintage glasses are important accessories. Any trifle, picked up by what is called "into the vein" - takes you to the step of Olympus "Vintage" and the slightest misstep or negligence - shatteringly throws tastelessness into the abyss.

Decided to arrange a studio in vintage style? - Oh please, get at least black and white pictures or ideally magazines of those years. Vintage interior is a task for a serious designer, here a couple of trips to the store building materials and a trip to the furniture will not save. We'll have to pretty much tinker in the search for: vintage lamps, armchairs, stools, chairs, tables, dressers ... All this can not be found in one day. Such a room will be filled for years, well, of course, if, of course, you again don’t want to be known among the “friends” as “the official representative of the market building yard”

You can try to do something vintage with your own hands. For example sew a skirt on the pattern of the 40s. But even here it is not so simple: the choice of the texture of the material, accessories and even sometimes threads - all this should correspond to a chosen period of time.

See vintage photos, vintage pictures, browse magazines and catalogs, attend exhibitions and museums - and you will succeed!
