From English, the phrase Shabby chic translates literally as "shabby chic." This popular style today is distinguished by a complete rejection of simplicity, brevity, brightness. This project will tell you how to make a chest decoupage with your own hands, to turn an ordinary object into an old, luxurious thing with history and its own secrets. The main decorative methods of alteration will be direct (classic) and volumetric decoupage, patinated, etc.

What you need to transform the dresser

First of all, you need a chest of drawers. If you have old grandmother's furniture - well, you will be able to transform your old chest of drawers with your own hands. But those who do not have such, we recommend to purchase a dresser-blank. It will be a blank sheet on which we write what we want.

Description of work

  1. If you are using an old chest of drawers, first of all you should remove accessories from it, and then clean the wood of paint / varnish with emery paper.
  2. Remove dust. After that, degrease and decontaminate the surface with a cotton pad moistened with liquid or common alcohol.
  3. Paint all the internal parts of the dresser ivory. Leave the product to dry completely.
  4. The next step is to apply a dark stain to create an imitation of scuffs. To do this, use the technique of a dry brush. Thus, the inner surface of the dresser and drawers will get the desired old look, while they will not become thicker, and the drawers will be easily pulled out.

The dry brush technique consists of applying a small (remaining after wiping) amount of coloring matter on the convex parts of the product with a stiff brush or brush. Such a decorative technique allows, imitating rubbing, to emphasize the relief and age of the object.

  1. Primer the outer surface of the dresser.
  2. When the primer is dry, clean the outside of the dresser with sandpaper. Small roughness will improve the adherence of the decoration materials to the wood.
  3. We put black paint on the places of the dresser where we plan to create the effect of wear. We are waiting for the paint to dry.
  4. Take the usual paraffin candle, rub it with the surface covered with black paint.
  5. Cover the chest of drawers with 4-5 layers of base color paint (in our project - ivory).

Apply each subsequent paint coat only after the previous one has dried. To clarify how long it will take, read the instructions of the manufacturer of your chosen funds.

  1. Fasten the stencil with the pattern you like with pieces of masking tape so that it does not shift while working with a special paste.

When choosing a stencil, you should always take into account the shape of the picture and the place where you want to make a three-dimensional or flat dresser decor. If the finish will be placed in the corner, then the stencil pattern is preferably also used angular.

  1. Using a palette knife, apply a special acrylic paste to the area of your chosen decorative embossed pattern. Try to make the most even layer.
  1. One minute after applying the paste, carefully remove the stencil.
  2. Even after 5 minutes, gently pat the pattern with light clapping movements of the fingers. Similarly, we apply a pattern on all sides of the dresser, on the front parts of the sliding drawers. For complete drying of the pattern of acrylic paste will take at least 10-12 hours.
  3. Sand with an emery cloth embossed pattern. The quality of this work depends on whether you want to get a perfectly flat decor or textured.

Scuffs and scratches on pieces of furniture in the style of a chebbi, as a rule, are applied after finishing the lacquer coating. Since this work is not easy, you can make scratches now.

  1. Use the palette knife to tear off the light paint. Pre-rubbing the surface with paraffin will ease the task.
  2. From a napkin or rice card we prepare separate elements of the drawing.

For decoupage, it is not necessary to cut out the fragments, it is better to pull them out carefully, trying not to damage the drawing. Torn edges look more natural, easier to decorate.

  1. Using PVA glue (or a mixture of glue and water), glue the fragments into place (top and side surfaces, front parts of the drawers). Perform work slowly. Starting from the center, moving to the periphery, apply the drawing without folds and air bubbles.
  2. It's time to gild the top of the patterned decor. Use a small brush for applying lacquer, mordan, hard brush, gold leaf. Apply mordan on the most prominent parts of the volume pattern with light movements. After 30 minutes, apply to the treated places potal. Gently smooth it with a wide dry brush. Remove the leaflet. Hard brush remove excess gold from the pattern.
  3. Similarly, apply gold fragments to other embossed patterns.
  4. Gently fine sandpaper process visible edges of the drawings to make them as thin as possible.
  5. Use a thin brush (ivory paint) to make light strokes, painting the borders of pasted floral (or other motifs you use).
  6. Apply a small amount of patina to the sponge, then lightly rub over the surface of the chest.
  7. Varnish a dresser.
  8. After drying in the old holes, install new handles.

And yet such a wonderful dresser should be beautiful and in detail. Decorate the inner surface of the drawers using decoupage technique. You will need fabric, cardboard, napkin, glue for decoupage on fabric, iron, glue Moment, scissors.

  1. Prepare 4 pieces of cardboard, one at the bottom of each box. The size of the cardboard must exactly match the size of the bottom.
  2. From a simple monochromatic fabric of natural gray color cut 4 pieces, in which the cartons will be wrapped.
  3. Before you make a decoupage on the fabric, you need to pull out decorative motifs from rice paper or napkins. It is not necessary that the drawing coincide in all drawers.
  4. Saturating the fabric with glue for decoupage, fasten the pattern on a piece of textile. It is necessary to dry the material, without bending the picture, only in a vertical position at room temperature (use hanging on clothespins). The process should last at least 24 hours.
  5. Iron ironing on both sides.
  6. Tuck the carton with a cloth. Secure the ends on the reverse side with Moment glue.
  7. Glue the decorated cartons to the bottom of the boxes.

To make a décor with your own hands is to create a unique designer item from an ordinary piece of furniture. It will dilute the usual situation with its brightness, change the general interior of the room. Consider a few ways to decorate your own hands.

Liked drawings need only cut, distribute on the decorated surface and secure with special means.

Individuals who are not afraid to experiment and spend time on creativity may like decoupage of old furniture. This technique requires high-quality materials and patience. This option will update and refine the interior, but it will not take much time.

The materials that are used in decoupage furniture with their own hands, include bright three-layer napkins, extra pieces of wallpaper. Today, along with the above, apply the fabric. Contrasting, colorful patterns, elegant fabric texture will transform the old, sloppy furniture into designer creations.

In the end, the decorated surface is varnished, so that the thing lasts a long time and looks attractive. In addition to paper, for decoupage, you can use lace, leather and drawings from magazines.

Today we will watch the master class of furniture decoupage, learn how to decorate interior items.

Often the word "vintage" is used in everyday life. In the decoration of the apartment, vintage means the return of life to old things. Not everyone can afford to buy vintage furniture, because you have to fork out for a big one. But to create an inexpensive, unique counterpart - is subject to any person. The main thing that you need to have with you is a rich imagination and delicate multi-layered napkins.

Making cabinets and sideboards in the kitchen with napkins

To freshen up the look of an old kitchen set, purchase paper napkins with a contrasting vintage pattern, cut out the looked over pictures and start creating “updated” furniture.

For beginners, you first need to practice on thick cardboard or chipboard covered with plywood. "Stuffed" hand, you can begin to decorate the kitchen cabinet. For this we need:

  • High-quality three-layer napkins with bright patterns;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Sharp scissors;
  • White glue;
  • Acrylic paint and varnish.

If you decorate old furniture, clean and level the surface with sandpaper and degrease with alcohol.

After covering the selected surface with acrylic paint, let it dry. Then, cut out the ornament you like and separate the two lower layers.

At the place where the picture will be stuck, put glue and put the picture, carefully straighten its surface, we draw air bubbles. With the help of a natural brush we coat the top layer of the pattern with glue - this will save it from rupture after subsequent dyeing.

When the pattern is dry, gently apply acrylic varnish. Its plus is that it dries quickly, it does not “stink” with chemicals, which makes it possible to varnish furniture inside. After 3-4 hours you have a new vintage wardrobe.

Following the above step-by-step instructions, you can decorate the doors of bedside tables, wall cabinets, the visible part of the wardrobe.

Decoupage wallpaper

Wallpapers decorate only the furniture that does not fit the new interior or is considered outdated. Wallpapers, with a trendy, harmoniously combined with the decor print, will refresh the furniture and give it a second chance for "life." Methods of wallpaper are varied. Wallpaper can be pasted as separate parts (doors, drawers), and the entire visible surface as a whole.

For beginners, it is better to start decoupage furniture with simpler models. For example, you can decorate the table cover, while using a solid canvas.

This lesson with step-by-step photos of furniture decoupage will show you how to decorate the table properly and with taste. Typically, the material from which make the table cover are chipboard, boards, solid wood slab.

We need:

  • Acrylic lacquer;
  • Roller;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Vinyl or non-woven wallpaper of the desired shade;
  • PVA glue.

As in the previous cases, the cover is cleaned with alcohol and leveled with sandpaper. We measure the dimensions of the lid and cut off the corresponding, flat canvas with a small allowance. Then we smear the entire surface to be decoupled and the inside of the wallpaper with white glue. Carefully put the wallpaper, begin to align them with a roller.

Rolling a roller, we remove air bubbles and smooth the paper over the entire surface. Give the wallpaper to dry. After, polish the edge of the lid with emery cloth and coat the top layer with acrylic varnish. The finished product will look like it was bought.

Decoupage old stools

In each house, the apartment has an old, shabby stool, which is a pity to throw. How to turn old into a real masterpiece, a rarity? The answer is simple - napkin decoupage. This technique will help to make a vintage stool, without spending a lot of personal time and money. For this we need:

  • Acrylic paint and varnish;
  • Three-layer vintage napkins;
  • PVA glue;
  • Brushes with natural nap;
  • Sandpaper

We begin work, as in all other cases, with leveling and degreasing the surface with emery paper and alcohol. After cleaning the seat, cover it with two layers of cream, white or beige paint. We give it to dry, so as not to stick to the tools.

We divide the napkin into layers, the upper one is glued with a pattern on the outside. Dilute the glue with water in a 1: 1 ratio and treat the surface of the pattern with a mixture. In the course of a covering we align the picture and we eliminate air from under a napkin. Let the glue dry. After we varnish the surface. Voila! Vintage stool ready.

Tissue decoupage sleeping chest

Making a dresser cloth occurs in the event that it is outdated, peeled off and does not fit into the general background of the room. For work we need:

  • Patches of cloth;
  • Scissors;
  • Sandpaper;
  • Acrylic pastel and varnish;
  • Roller.

First, with the help of a solvent, we remove the old paint and sand the entire working surface with sandpaper. We coat with primer and paint with beige or milky acrylic paint. Give time to dry. After that, we cover the dresser with PVA glue, and glue the fabric with special glue. Roll the fabric over the work surface, remove air bubbles.

Depending on your preferences, choose the color, pattern and number of patches. Leave the fabric to dry, periodically spray out of the spray glue. This is done so that the fabric does not wrinkle and is well glued. We cover the product with a transparent acrylic varnish in several layers, giving each layer a certain amount of time to dry.

Photo ideas for decoupage furniture

Buying furniture is not always included in the family budget. Decoupage a chest of drawers with your own hands is not only giving the old thing a different look, but creating an original piece of furniture for quite a bit of money.

The advantages of decoupage chest

Old dressers differ in quality of production, refined lines, ageless design. A beautiful tea chest or a stylish piece of furniture of the last century can fall into the hands of a skilled worker. Like all furniture, over time, they lose their attractiveness due to faded paint, peeling paint and other reasons.

Restoration is subject to everyone at home. The main thing is to have patience, prepare everything you need and carefully read the steps of the process itself. If you make a decoupage of the chest with your own hands, it will breathe life into it.

Materials and tools

There are many ways to restore the dressers: decoupage with napkins and cloth, painting with stencils, aging with different shades of colors and creating the effect of cracks on the surface. Each method has its own characteristics, but always one result is a great author's thing.

To implement any decoupage project you will need:

  • finishing material;
  • emery paper with the smallest and medium abrasive crumb;
  • PVA or special decoupage glue;
  • ruler or tape measure;
  • scissors and stationery knife;
  • acrylic paint of different shades;
  • paint brushes;
  • primer, putty, varnish.

In addition, it may be necessary to potal for gilding and craquelure varnish to create the effect of cracks.

Restoration process from start to finish

The process of updating the old dresser can be divided into several main stages, each of which is important for achieving the desired result.

Preparatory stage

The stage of surface preparation plays a crucial role in the decoupage process. After all, it is worth only ignoring at least one item and all the work will go down the drain: the décor will come off, the irregularities of the old coating will appear under the paper or fabric.

Before you make decorating the dresser with your own hands, you need to remove the old layer of varnish or paint. At first it is realized with the help of coarse sandpaper or grinding disc. At the final stage, it is necessary to carefully polish the surface of the dresser with paper with the grain of the smallest size and felt.

If after grinding in some places cracks, holes and other defects appear, they are hidden by decorative putty. Allow to dry and grind again.

The base for the future masterpiece of interior art is created. Now it needs to be primed and painted. If the primer should be chosen only for wood, then there is no single solution with paint. It can be an acrylic composition or water based, monophonic or in several colors. It all depends on the initial ideas of the master and the result that must be achieved.

Aging and gilding

The process of aging implies imitation of the surface wiped out in some places: in the corners, on the ribs, near the handles.

To implement it, it is necessary to use paints of 2 shades: one is darker, which is the material of the dresser peeking out from under the wiped paint, and the background color. Paints are applied in stages:

  1. First, the dresser is painted with dark paint and allowed to dry.
  2. In places where in the future it is planned to create an imitation of aging, the surface is rubbed with paraffin.
  3. Apply the background color of the product.
  4. Carefully, slightly pressing over the paraffin layer, using a zero emery paper removes a layer of paint of the dominant color.

To make the dresser look old, you can use a craquelure instead of a simple varnish, which after drying forms cracks.

Carved chests with gilding elements look impressive, giving them greater value and chic. To achieve this effect, you can purchase gold patel, a thin foil imitating the precious metal, in special shops for needlework. The main thing in this business is not to overdo it and trim it with only some sections, placing accents.

Patel is glued to the surface and allowed to glue to dry thoroughly. Then the excess foil is removed and the gilded elements are given the desired shape.

Using napkins and cards

The use of napkins or special decoupage cards is more common when creating furniture in the style of Provence or Chebbi Chic, and the process of decorating is similar.

Decoupage napkins will cost less. To spoil the material will not be so offensive.

Cards can be of 3 types:

  1. With the image applied on thick rice paper, which has a coarse structure and pronounced fibers. These cards are best used to create an image of the joint to the joint on the entire surface of the furniture.
  2. On thin rice paper with a delicate texture, the pasted design looks realistic, with no visible borders. Such pictures often complement the strokes with watercolor, creating the effect of artistic painting.
  3. A card made of plain paper, which, like multi-layered napkins, should be divided into layers before gluing. To do this, on the front surface of the image put 1 or more layers of varnish, allow it to dry completely. Then the billet is dipped in water, allowed to soak completely, and a thick excess layer is gently rolled, leaving only the pattern attached to the lacquer.

Whatever material is selected, working with it is as follows:

  • The image is cut out.
  • A thin layer of liquid PVA or decoupage glue is applied on its reverse side and placed on the gluing point.
  • Then follows the most scrupulous process - alignment of the paper image. This should be done with a soft brush for painting, gently smoothing all wrinkles from center to edge.

If decorating implies blurring the edges between the hues of the image and the main background, draw a border using water-based water-based paints before sticking. After drying with a damp foam sponge, the tint is adjusted to the required size, making the transition smooth, washed out.

Painting using a stencil

The simplest way to decorate a chest of drawers is to apply various motifs and monograms with the help of stencils, which are presented in a wide assortment on the handicraft market.

The process consists of several simple steps: fixing the template on the surface, applying paint with a foam sponge, removing the stamp.
