Among the palette of bright colors in the autumn garden, chamomile gelenium is elegant, modest and beautiful ... Lost in summer against the background of lush blooming of roses, gladioli, lilies and dahlia, autumn gelenium manifests itself in all its glory at the end of the hot season, when the main riot of colors in the garden gradually fades away. The plant blooms for a long time and stays steadfast in any weather.

For reference. The helenium flowers owe such an interesting botanical name to the wife of King Menelaus, kidnapped by Paris - Beautiful Helen, who became the involuntary cause of the long Trojan War.

External characteristics

Autumn gelenium is quite high (up to 160 cm); the stems are strong, branching, by the end of autumn woody. The leaves are small, light green, serrated along the edges. Chamomile-shaped baskets, with a convex middle, are 3-6 cm in diameter. The edges of the petals are figured, as if cut out with scissors. Coquettishly splayed to the side, they resemble the core of the gelenium convex, covered with bright yellow anthers and take a spherical shape during flowering. On each stalk of the plant in its upper part 15-20 flowers simultaneously bloom. Their yellow-orange palette fully corresponds to the current season and fits optimally into days.

How to prolong flowering gelenium?

Admire the flowering of a modest garden decoration, during which many varieties tend to change color, from July to the first frost. The abundance of flowering is easy to ensure by pinching the tops of the shoots, and to extend the charming action by removing wilted inflorescences and a small part of the stem on which they are located. This manipulation activates the branching and the formation of new shoots that bloom after a short time.

Plant in the garden landscape

Autumn gelenium beautiful cut. Torn unblown, it will bloom anyway and will stand in a vase for a surprisingly long time without fading.

Perennial is often used to decorate unpresentable fences and revitalize the landscape in old sites. Gelenium can not be called an individual flower, such as, for example, a tulip or a rose. Most often it is an addition to the overall composition. On the garden plot, stunted varieties look gorgeous in the foreground of a flower garden, they can be planted as a curb plant. Tall geleniums are an excellent background for large flower beds, good neighbors for ornamental shrubs, excellent “partners” for perennial autumn-flowering asters, ornamental grasses, rudbecky.

At one place the plant can grow 3-4 years, during which there is a development of a large number of basal rosettes, each year rising higher and higher to the surface of the earth. In the future, this process may lead to freezing of the plant. Therefore, the location of gelenium periodically should be changed.

Popular varieties of autumn Helenium

Gelenium autumn (photos are presented in the article) in cultural cultivation has been known since the 17th century. It is the most popular species among its fellows and fundamental for the breeding of a large number of varieties. Many of them are used by growers to decorate their sites and disembark for aesthetic pleasure.

In July-September, the helenium autumn Merherheim beauty abundantly blooms. The plant is undemanding to the soil, the optimum location for it are sunny areas. Also, this variety can be planted in the penumbra. Bush height of 90-150 cm has strong stems, does not require a garter. Stable in windy weather. Externally decorative. Flowers play a diverse palette: red, golden, orange, yellow, copper; when blooming take one shade - dark brown.

The description of the autumn Helenium Pip squeak evokes an overwhelming desire to acquire such a variety at the dacha. The unpretentious autumn-flowering plant is characterized by short stature, up to 60 cm. It has a large number of strong straight stems with bright yellow flower baskets with a brown center and a mass of narrow leaves. Flowering begins in July. The plant is beautiful in group plantings, unpretentious in the care.

Velvety warm tones gives aesthetic pleasure gardeners gelenium autumn Jazz. The flowers of this variety are characterized by a red-yellow palette, baskets-inflorescences in diameter are 3-5 cm.

The landscape of the autumn garden will perfectly decorate the autumn gelenium Rubinzverg (translated from German as “the ruby gnome”). Against the rest of the plants, the perennial culture is distinguished by ruby-red flowers with a convex dark middle. The variety is low, about 70 cm. The bush is spreading, with rapidly growing new shoots.

Red-copper-yellow flowers in the garden will enrich the autumn gelenium Waltraut. The bush is low, up to 80 cm. Flowering occurs in July-August.

Gelenium feature

Autumn helenium bushes can only be called such conditionally. In fact, this is a colony of independent plants, flowering stems of which live only one season.

From the column “This is interesting”: there is a belief that the gelenium petals used to be used instead of tobacco. Inhaling them, the person sneezed, thus getting rid of the evil spirits present in the body.

Helenium autumn (Helenium autumnale) has one specific feature: the absence of a hibernating rhizome. At the end of flowering, the stems, along with the roots, die off, giving way to new rosettes forming from the renewal buds at their base. These are independent having their own root system. Each of them gives full-flowered flowering shoots, which, despite their defenseless appearance, are able to withstand fairly strong frosts in the snow-free winters.

Subtleties of caring for gelenium

Autumn gelenium in care is absolutely uncapulous. With the acquisition of such a plant in its own area should be aware that it does not tolerate drought. Therefore, on dry days it is necessary to water the gelenium copiously and often. Weeding and shallow soil loosening are recommended periodically. Weed control can be minimized by mulching the area with peat or rotted leaves.

To prepare for winter, the stalks of gelenium need to be cut almost to the surface of the earth, leaving 10–15 cm.

Feeding activities

To activate growth at the beginning of the vegetation period, autumn gelenium will not be superfluous to treat the growth stimulator “Bud” at the rate of 10 grams of product per 10 liters of water.

  1. May. A 10-liter bucket of water - potassium sulfate, urea and organic drug "Effecton" (in a tablespoon). Consumption of the resulting solution per 1 square. meter - 3-4 liters.
  2. During flowering. In 10 liters of water to dilute a tablespoon of the drug "Agricola 7" and "Agricola fantasy." Add 1 liter of slurry here. Consumption per 1 square. square meter - 2-3 liters of the finished solution.
  3. The end of October. 10 liters of water - a tablespoon of potassium sulfate and superphosphate. Drug consumption per 1 square. plot meter - 5 liters.

Reproduction of autumn gelenium vegetatively

Gelenium autumn, planting and caring for which do not represent a special complexity, multiplies in several ways, the easiest of which is the division of the bush. The optimal period for this operation is May-month, but if necessary it can be done at any other time, even at the flowering stage.

The bush is required to be dug up and divided into parts, each of which is low pruned before planting - up to 10-15 cm from the soil level. By dividing the bush, it is recommended to propagate high-quality plants, in order to save the characteristic features.

Cutting method

Reproduction by cuttings is no less popular among gardeners. In the spring you want to cut a few favorite twigs and put in the water. As soon as the roots appear, young shoots can be planted in the soil. For better rooting, young cuttings are recommended to cover with cans or plastic bottles. You can remove the container when the first leaflets appear. A plant planted by grafting will delight in flowering a year after planting.

Seed method

Seed propagation is less popular due to the low germination rate and laboriousness of the planting process. In open ground, seeds can be sown at the end of autumn or in May, in well-warmed soil. To secure against possible frosts, it is recommended to cover the area with plastic wrap.

For the cultivation of seedlings gelenium sowing seed is made in the spring (April-May) in planting tanks. Seeds should be stratified beforehand by mixing them with wet sawdust and leaving for 3 weeks at a temperature of +3 ... +5 o C.

It is required to germinate seeds at a temperature of +18 ... +22 o C. The appearance of 2-3 full leaflets will indicate the need for picking (planting) young plants. In open ground planting of seedlings should be made in May. Before immersion in the hole of the plant, you should first lower the roots into the water in order to saturate with moisture. The number of plants per square meter should be no more than 4-5 pieces due to the active growth of the bush.

After planting, the site should be mulched with peat or humus.

Seed harvesting

Seed collection should be done before prolonged precipitation characteristic of the autumn season. Otherwise they will rot on the plant itself. The maturity of the seed can be determined by darkened reed flowers and blackened tubular. However, the best option is to purchase seeds in specialized stores.

Diseases and pests

Also negatively affects the growth of helenium moisture stagnation, able to form from the close occurrence of groundwater. Therefore, planting plants, you should responsibly consider the choice of planting site in order to avoid negative consequences in the future.

Gelenium - one of the most common plants in our area, which attracts with its unpretentious care and will help significantly ennoble. Today, there are many varieties of this flower, so every summer resident can choose the one that best suits his taste preferences. Gelenium, landing and care   in the open ground for which it is not difficult, it is able to grow any, even a beginner florist. How to do it right? When and where is the best place to plant a plant? Answers to questions we learn from this article.

Gelenium, planting and care in the open field

Landing Gelenium - where to start?

For a start, we note that this flower is very popular among all landscape designers due to its exclusive beauty, bright colors and extraordinary pomp of shrubs. Depending on the desire, the flowers of the plant can be orange, yellow or red. Gelenium belongs to long-flowering perennials, which implies the presence of many advantages, for example:

  • No permanent landing at the beginning of the summer season.
  • Perennials adapt better to adverse conditions.

The main feature of the flower can be called the duration of its flowering, because the flowers appear in the middle of summer and bloom before the start of frost. How to plant Gelenium? Let's look at some requirements:

  1. The soil. The flower will grow on any, even not very nutritious soil. The only thing that needs to be considered is the soil looseness. The weak root system of the plant is not able to take root and settle down in the hard ground. To give friability most often used peat, which is mixed with the soil.
  2. Location. The plant grows well in a well-lit, open area. It is necessary to avoid dark places under a spreading tree or a large bush. You must also ensure that there are no drafts that adversely affect the development of the flower.
  3. Fertilizer. Although Helunium is not particularly picky about nutrition, to get a healthy, beautiful plant, it is best to fertilize the soil before planting. To do this, you can use organic or mineral fertilizers. As for the first, I would like to remind you of the importance of observing the correct dosage, otherwise an excessive amount of fertilizer can lead to the death of the root system.

When is the best time to plant a flower? The best time is horses in May or mid-autumn, when the earth is warm enough and in the near future frosts are excluded. Planting material is sold in any specialized stores. Gelenium multiplies seeds, cuttings or dividing the bush, through which you can save money and plant a flower throughout. Seeds are first germinated at home, then planted in the soil and grown until small seedlings appear. As soon as steadily warm weather sets in, seedlings are transferred to open ground.

How to care for Gelenium?

Care for the flower is easy. This will require compliance with some rules:

  • Watering. The plant does not tolerate drought and lack of moisture, so you need to establish regular watering and follow it exactly. In dry times, increase the irrigation dose.
  • Loosening. Too much moisture can also adversely affect the root system of Gelenium, so loosening and mulching will be required.
  • Sprinkling. Pests and infections can attack the plant. When this happens, you can use special chemicals, soap or soda.
  • Shelter for the winter.   Before the onset of cold weather, the flower needs shelter and protection from frost. To do this, the shrub is completely cut off, leaving about 10 cm on the surface, and cover with sawdust or straw. This will help preserve the plant and in the spring once again enjoy its magnificent flowering.
In winter, the shrub is cut off, leaving 10 cm on the surface.

As you can see, Gelenium, landing and care in the open ground   beyond which it is not difficult, according to the power to grow anyone, even a novice master. We hope that our advice will help you to create on your territory an exclusive landscape design.

  • How to plant anemone flowers in the open field? Tips…

In the world there are many very different plants that are distinguished by their unique appearance, shade of inflorescences and other features. Many species are found only in the wild and can not be grown at home, while the rest freely take root in the modified environment and do not require special care or treatment. Among these plants, helenium is perennial.

The beautiful and hardy flower belongs to the Astrov family, and the tropical regions of North and Central America are considered to be its homeland.

General information

Gelenium looks like a lush bushgrowing to 160 centimeters in height. The bush itself consists of several independent shoots that grow separately, but are placed tightly. Today, botanists emit about 30 varieties and varieties of gelenium.

The stems of a helenium flower have a branching structure, a small thickness and a decent height. The size of the sharp leaves is small, and near them are tiny inflorescences in the form of baskets. As for the flowers themselves, they are something like daisies. The color is represented by soft yellow, dark red and brownish tones and is determined by varietal characteristics. The main advantage of gelenium is a good aroma and bright color.

It is known that gelenium has no perennial root system, and all the roots begin to die off in late autumn, together with peduncles and green stems. In the underground part a characteristic rosette with a rhizome is created, from which a new flower is soon formed.

Gelenium autumn and other varieties of plants

Despite the large variety of cultivated varieties, only 5 species are very popular. However, each of them consists of multiple grandeur hybrids and breeding specimens.

Will consider the most popular varieties of perennialwhich are grown in open ground:

In addition, gardeners often grow on their plots. autumn helenium type, which is in demand due to unpretentious nature and good growth rate. Thin stems 160 centimeters long, have small leaves with characteristic teeth on the edges. Inflorescences resemble peculiar baskets that contain flowers with yellow or red petals. Flowering begins in July and lasts until September. Seed ripening begins in October. Photos available on the web help to see how such an exotic resident looks during the flowering period.

Gelenium: planting and care in the open field

Planted perennial shrubs can be in several ways. If we consider the seed planting method, it is not popular due to the low germination rate. In addition, pick up quality planting material is not easy. However, if you pay attention to a number of features of the upcoming event, the planting of seeds can be made successful. It is advisable to hold it in the late fall. A high germination rate when planting seed in open ground is seen in warm, southern regions. In middle latitudes, it is better to plant seeds on seedlings.

To ensure the germination process is fast and efficient, the seeds are amenable to preliminary stratification. In this case, it is important to mix the planting material with wet sawdust and place in the refrigerator for a period of 2-3 weeks. Then the seeds are planted on seedlings. This action is better to implement in late February. It is important to understand that flowering will begin only after 2-3 years, and not earlier.

Choosing a soil compositionGive preference to a land with a high peat content. It must first be moistened, and the seeds sown superficially, without penetration. The container with the landing should be covered with glass and moved to a place with good illumination. From time to time it is ventilated and sprayed with water. When the two true leaves appear, the seedlings can be swooped into separate containers, following certain rules.

Features landing gelenium in open ground

Planting grown seedlings that were planted on seedlings can start in late spring. Preference should be given to well-lit areas where the soil composition is characterized by neutral acidity and high nutrient content.

In shaded conditions, only varieties with yellow inflorescences grow well. Low-growing seedlings are recommended to be placed at a distance of 35 centimeters from each other, and tall 70-75 centimeters.

Before planting a seedling in open ground, it is necessary to dig up the ground carefully and feed it with organic fertilizers. In their quality, you can use humus or compost. If the soil composition is too heavy, you can mix it with sand. Then you should carefully remove the plant from the tank, dropping the roots in water for a few minutes. The next stage involves the landing of planting material to a permanent place. It is important to carefully grind the ground with peat, observing the right concentration. Despite the unpretentious nature, the autumn gelenium flower requires comfortable lighting, temperature and humidity.

Autumn Helenium: Peculiarities of Care for the Perennial Flower in the Open Field

If you look at the photo of autumn helenium, it is easy to guess that such a plant looks really very beautiful and elegant. At the same time, there are no particular difficulties in caring for such a flower at home, therefore growing it yourself is easy enough. The main thing is to consider a few basic tips and adhere to established rules.

Competent care for shrubs in the open field consists of watering, feeding, weeding and loosening the soil. It is known that gelenium is a moisture-loving representative of tropical flora, so it is better to water it at least twice a week. During the period of dry and hot weather, the intensity of the procedure is increased to once a day. At the same time, each watering should be accompanied by loosening the soil. At this stage, you must be especially careful and try not to damage the rhizome. When grown in acidic soil, before planting it should be a lime plant.

To the end result met all expectations, and the planted flower was lush and beautiful, gelenium served formative pruning. It is enough to cut a few side shoots in mid-June. At the same time, in the springtime, it is necessary to pinch the tops of the gelenium. In addition, every three years, the bushes are divided and seated separately, otherwise the rate of aging will increase significantly. As for tall varieties, they require a garter to different supports.

Features of fertilizer and feeding

It is necessary to feed a perennial plant with all sorts of fertilizers in May. For the procedure using this solution:

  • 1 tablespoon of urea;
  • 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate;
  • 1 tablespoon ready fertilizer “Effects;
  • A bucket of water;

About four liters of such a solution should be poured per square meter of territory.

Re-feeding   can be carried out during the flowering period. Here, a solution based on slurry, a spoonful of fertilizer Agricola-Fantasia and the same amount of Agricola-7 diluted with a bucket of water shows itself well.

Third dressing will be a useful action after completion of flowering, in early October. When choosing a fertilizer, it is better to give preference to drugs based on superphosphate and potassium sulfate. During the period of tying the buds, foliar feeding manifests itself perfectly, which is carried out with the help of growth stimulants available in specialized stores. With the proper implementation of such an event, the flower can become truly lush, beautiful and unique.

Helenium pests and diseases

Unpretentious nature and strong immunity allows geleniumu resist many evils and diseases. However, some of them still pose a great danger to him. For example, you can take chrysanthemum nematode, whose vital activity is accompanied by damage to the leaves and flower buds. To deal with such a problem you need to quickly and radically, cutting off and burning the affected areas. Preventive measures include adding a small amount of hydrated lime to the soil composition. If we are talking about the prevention of fungal diseases, it is enough to ensure a competent watering of the flower and not to overdo it with moisture.

In the form of bouquets, the flower of gelenium looks very elegant. This is confirmed by the numerous photos that are offered on the Internet. Very nice is the combination of gelenium with asters and chrysanthemums. However, a suitable plant can be cut only after the final opening of the buds. If the procedure was performed too early, the flowers may not be able to bloom in the water.

Individual varieties are in good contact with:

  • purple asters,
  • delphinium
  • dahlias,
  • stonecrop.

When grown in open field, it is advisable to plant the plant with marigolds, goldenrod, phlox, and yarrow. Also, perennial flower goes well with white flowers.

When making landscape design in the gardenGelenium can be a worthy decoration for reservoirs, fences or outbuildings. With it, many gardeners effectively hide any topography defects or characteristic irregularities. Often, several plant varieties are planted in the same area, which differ in their blooming time and beauty. In this case, it will be possible to admire the excellent green "friend" for a very long time, starting in spring, and until late autumn.

When the flower stalks are completely blooming, they can be removed and then suitable planting material removed from the seed pods. If you wish to grow any unique variety, it is not recommended to use seed methods. In addition, such an action requires certain skills and difficulties.

Harvesting seeds is best implemented before the onset of lingering autumn rains.so that they do not have time to rot. The first sign of final maturation is presented in the form of the appearance of a blackened middle of the flower and dark petals. The collected planting material is recommended to be placed in a cool dark place.

If you pay attention to such recommendations and follow the advice of professionals, your long-lasting gelenium will look even more beautiful than in the photo. It is important to understand that despite the enduring immunity and picky nature, an exotic plant requires proper care and attention. Given these nuances, you will be pleased with the end result.

Plant Gelenium

Gelenium is one of the decorative flowering perennials found here in Russia in almost every garden. Love for this bright, sunny flower, pleasing the eye for a long time, is understandable. No one will be indifferent to this fiery miracle that can cheer up even in inclement weather. No wonder they say about him "kissed by fire."

America is the birthplace of the flower. In nature, there are more than 30 species.

The flowering of gelenium begins closer to the fall, when the palette of summer colors is no longer so expressive. All the more spectacular and attractive placers of its many colors, reminiscent of festive fireworks. This is a bush with straight strong stems with a height of more than one and a half meters.

Gelenium quite unpretentious and does not require special care. Not possessing perennial roots, at the end of a long flowering, he dies. But at the base of the stems a lot of young rosettes are formed that can withstand the harshest winter frosts. And in the spring each of these sockets throws out a young stalk-peduncle. And since there are so many outlets, it is not difficult to imagine how much the gelenium shrub grows.

The plant is undemanding to the soil in which it has to grow. Of course, it is preferable for him to be fertile land with a sufficient amount of moisture. But even in more “Spartan” conditions, this plant will not lose its uncomplicated attractiveness.

Sowing can be carried out by seeds directly into the ground, before winter. And you can sow the seeds in boxes, in early spring, where they germinate in two or three weeks. When several leaves appear on the plants, they dive. Then, already permanently planted plants are planted in a permanent place, already in the open ground, the distance between them must be 30 cm. The best time for landing is the beginning of June, when the threat of freezing passes. During the summer, seedlings gain strength and the next year will delight you with a bright, abundant flowering.

Helenium multiplication

The helenium is propagated by dividing the bush into rosettes with good, strong roots. Make it easy: when digging a bush easily splits. Planted plants should not be very close to each other, it will give them the opportunity to grow. The optimal distance is about one meter.

Watering and feeding gelenium

If the summer is dry and hot, you will need watering at least 2 times during the week. Well, if you can solve the problem with the help of drip irrigation. Light for plants is also important. In well-lit, sunny places, the flowers will be brighter, more saturated colors. With a lack of light, in the penumbra, plants with red petals are unlikely to bloom. In such conditions it is only possible to grow helenium with yellow flowers.

When you make the necessary fertilizers in the soil the plants will thank you with a lush bright bloom. Enough to do it 2 times throughout the season.

In order for the gelenium bushes not to suffer from the lack of snow cover during the harsh winter months, they must be mulched with sawdust and moss. Before the onset of cold weather, bushes are pruned.

For more lush, sprawling bushes in the spring hold nipping shoots tops. To rejuvenate the plant, in the fall or spring, you need to dig it out of the ground, divide the bush and plant it again in the soil.

Video on the care of gelenium in the open field

In the world today there are more than 30 types of geleniums, growing mainly in North and Central America. These annuals and perennials belong to the Compound family. Almost all summer, heleniums are invisible at the site and only at the end of summer, when the bright colors of their neighbors gradually fade, they enter the arena (seemingly invisible) - moderately bright and colorful, with golden baskets of warm shades.

An interesting feature of this plant is its “long-term”. In fact, by the winter, roots and flower stalks die, but a leaf rosette with new roots is formed from the remaining underground buds on the one-year-old stem, which will have a flower stem next year. It seems to us that in the garden grows an overgrown gelenium shrub, which we planted earlier, but in reality these are already independent plants growing closely to each other.

The length of the stem of helenium can reach 1.5 m, the leaves are alternate lanceolate. Baskets can be either single or assembled in inflorescences of the corymboid type. These flowers are colored purple, red, yellow, brown or orange depending on the particular variety (the central part is usually yellow or brown). After flowering, pubescent seeds of elongated cylindrical shape are formed.

Types of Gelenium

As noted above, there are more than 30 varieties of gelenium in the world, but only 5 of them are suitable for growing in Russian dachas:

  1. Autumn Gehlenium is the most common variety in the summer cottages of our country. Lignified stalks are strong and tall (up to 160 cm in height). The leaves are small in size with a characteristic serrated edge. 3-5 cm baskets are collected in corymbose inflorescences, which can be up to 30 cm across. Reed flowers are yellow or yellow-reddish, tubular flowers are deep yellow (like egg yolk). The flowering period lasts from July to September.
  2. Helenium Gupesa - plants up to 90 cm high. Grayish-green leaves are whole lanceolate. Peduncles long. Single yellow inflorescences have a diameter of about 9 cm. Flowering lasts from June to July.
  3. Spring gelenium is a flowering plant, the stems of which reach a height of about 1 m. The leaves are lanceolate whole. The inflorescences have a diameter of up to 7 cm. The reed flowers are yellow-orange, and the tubular flowers are brown in color. Flowering occurs in mid-May and lasts until the end of June.
  4. Gehlenium Bigelow is a rather rare present. Straight stems reach a height of 80 cm. The leaves are lanceolate, whole. The diameter of the inflorescences is up to 6 cm. The reed flowers are colored yellow and the tubular (middle) flowers are brown. Flowering begins in June and lasts until the end of July.
  5. Gelenium hybrid combines the characteristics of different species, but the autumn helenium acts as its basis.

The best varieties to give: "Moerheim Beauty", "Cockade", "Rubinswerg" (aka "Ruby Dwarf").

Helenium multiplication

Gelenium is most often propagated by leaf rosettes and dividing a bush (separation of 2–3 summer bushes is done in the spring; this is the best way for propagation of the varietal gelenium, the characteristic features of parents are preserved). Less commonly used seed method (suitable for breeding species helenium, when the varietal characteristics of the parents do not need to be fixed). In the latter case, the seeds can be sown in open ground in autumn or spring, or at the end of February - early March - for seedlings.

With a seedling method, it is necessary to perform stratification. The seed box with the seeds is wrapped in a plastic bag and stored in the vegetable section of the refrigerator for 1-1.5 months. At the end of this period, the container is taken out and placed in a warm place (+ 18 ... + 22 C) with artificial lighting. In stage 2-3 of these leaves, the seedlings dive into separate cups. Landing in open ground is made not earlier than the end of May, when the threat of night frost is completely bypassed. The site should be sunny or slightly shaded. It is best to give preference to light nutrient well-drained soils with a neutral pH. Before planting seedlings of gelenium, the site should be dug up along with the compost to a depth of about 25-30 cm.

The landing pit should be approximately 2 times larger than the landing hole. Before planting, the roots of the plant (together with a lump of earth on them) are immersed in water for a few minutes so that they should “get drunk”. To plant the seedlings of geleniums should be so that it is approximately at the same depth as before the transplant. The optimal distance between adjacent landings in the row is about 30 cm, the rows themselves should be removed from each other at a distance of 35-40 cm. At the end of the landing, the ridges are mulched with humus or peat. Gel-grown gelenium blooms only in the second year.

By the way, you need to have time to gather the seeds before the beginning of the period of long autumn rains. The collection is made after the reed and tubular flowers turn black.

Gel care

The main thing that needs to be remembered when growing gelenium, this plant does not tolerate dry soil. In particularly dry periods of summer, watering should be frequent and abundant. However, the rest of the time to flood these plants is not recommended. The loose soil, which does not allow water to stagnate for a long time, saves from overflows. Therefore, loosening, combined with weeding from weeds, are important measures in the cultivation of geleniums. In order not to waste time on weeding - perform soil mulching.

Heleniums are fed three times per season:

  1. The first dressing is performed in May, in the bucket of water dilute 1 tbsp. l Urea, 1 tbsp. organic fertilizer "Effecton" and 1 tbsp. l potassium sulfate. For processing 1 m2 spend about 3.5 liters of the resulting solution.
  2. The time of the second feeding comes in the flowering period. Take 1 liter of liquid cow dung, add to it 1 tbsp. l "Agricola-7" and 1 tbsp. l "Agricola-fantasy". The resulting composition diluted in a bucket of water. For processing 1 m2 use about 2.5 liters of the mixture.
  3. Toward the end of October in a bucket of water, dilute 1 tbsp. l potassium sulfate and 1 tbsp superphosphate. Spend 5 liters of the resulting fertilizer per 1 m2.

Also at the very beginning of the budding period, spray the plants with Bud growth regulator (10 g of the drug per bucket of water).

In order to maintain the luxuriance of flowering at the proper level, wilted flowers should be removed on time.

About 1 time in 2-3 years, in spring time, the helenium should be transplanted to a new place. Usually this procedure is combined with vegetative reproduction.

Diseases and pests

Of the diseases, the Heleniums can "attack" rot. To prevent this from happening with your flowers, try to maintain an optimal water balance of the soil.

Wintering gelenium

At the end of autumn, the stalks of gelenium must be cut almost to the ground level (hemp leaves are about 10–15 cm high). At the end of pruning, the surface should be mulled with sawdust or moss, and covered with lutrasil on top, which will reliably protect plants during hard frosts, as well as in the case of a little snowy winter.
