We grow coffee at home

To grow the coffee tree at home we need: coffee beans are not fried or cuttings of coffee tree.

Consider the seed method of propagation of coffee. The main question is where to get coffee beans for growing at home, you can buy green non-roasted coffee beans in a store and try to grow a plant from coffee seeds, the probability of growth is very small. You can beg from friends who already have a fruiting plant, a couple of coffee tree fruits, ripe brown coffee red fruit, peel coffee and pulp that is sweet to the taste and has a tonic effect, the grain usually consists of two halves, each half is full seed coffee tree that grows very quickly. You can buy coffee seeds in a flower shop, but than to buy seeds, it is better to buy a ready-grown germinated plant that is 3-4 months old. Now consider all the ways to grow coffee in more detail.

Coffee fruits from green to ripe and overripe

About 50 species of wild plants in tropical Africa, Madagascar and Mascarena Islands, evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees belong to the genus Coffee, or the Coffee Tree (Coffea). As an ornamental plant, the coffee tree was first cultivated in botanical gardens and greenhouses.

Coffee tree seeds generally lose their germination very quickly and the fresher the seeds, the more likely shoots will appear. If you have dried green beans in your hands, pour coffee into a plate of water and put coffee beans there for a day, after 24 hours, the embryo of the root should appear on the grains, coffee beans that began to sprout, plant each in a separate pot. Of the hundreds of seeds that you remove from the plant, even a couple of months, only a few will ascend. This should pay attention to those who would like to have a coffee.

Two weeks before sowing the seeds, a loose water- and breathable substrate is prepared: sod earth is steamed, mixed with sand and sifted peat in proportion (1: 2: 2).

Purified coffee seeds are laid out in a pot filled with the substrate, flat side down at a distance of 3 cm from each other. After pressing the seeds into the soil to a depth of 1 cm, pour the substrate with a pink solution of potassium permanganate and cover the crops with glass.

Do not forget to air pots, wipe and turn the glass; with the emergence of seedlings, the ventilation time gradually increases.

The first sprouts of coffee will appear in two months, be patient.

Coffee in 4 months has an already formed primary leaf that will fall over time.

Coffee is a very unpretentious and grateful plant. In the first year of life, the growth rate is modest - an average increase of 15-20 cm. But over time, the plant begins an independent abundant branching, without additional trimming.

The coffee tree at 9 months begins the initial formation of the crown, the crown is formed independently.

It is necessary to try, as little as possible to interfere in the independent life of the plant. Pruning is required only as a last resort - when the bush becomes too large for the room that you are ready to give it.

Coffee that develops from seedlings of a tree does not need crown formation: at first they grow by one trunk, and in the second year, skeletal branches grow from the awakened lateral axillary buds of the trunk. Too long side shoots of coffee are cut to ensure the splendor of the crown and abundant flowering. Fruiting of coffee trees grown from seeds begins in 5-6 years, coffee has quite interesting branches, about the same as in the Christmas tree. They depart at right angles to the trunk. Therefore, the crown is sprawling. That's because of this crown and often there are difficulties, because the plant must be placed closer to the light, it is very light-loving

Transplantation in the first years of life requires an annual, in a pot larger in diameter by at least 5 cm. Otherwise, instead of blooming for the first time in 4 years, the coffee will not have any at all. Soil is used any - suitable for tub plants or shrubs, rich in nutrients, structured and not very loose.

Spray coffee is not necessary, but it will not be superfluous. Coffee tree should be wiped from dust with a damp sponge and arrange coffee warm shower. Temperature control is usual for indoor plants. Recommended wintering at 16-18 ° C. But adult plants are well tolerated and lower temperatures, up to 10-12 ° C, but always in a very bright place and with rare watering.

Coffee is a very attractive shrub with a symmetrical crown and shiny dark green leaves. Light brown bark with age exfoliates from the trunk. So the surrounding earth is literally strewn with fine chips.

In the summer of coffee, you can take out the street by placing it in the shade of a tree, if you put the coffee under direct sunlight quickly dies, in the summer outside the coffee tree loves the shadow.

Coffee tree is 9 years old.

Young saplings of a coffee tree need to be replanted every year. When the tree begins to bear fruit - to replant so often is no longer required, on average, every three to four years. This should be done in the spring. Before transplanting the plant, provide drainage in a new vessel. Inspect the roots of the plants, remove rotten and diseased. The composition of the soil will suit almost any, most importantly, with weak acidity. For example, the following: turfy land - 40%, leafy earth - 30%, river sand - 20%, riding peat - 10%. This soil is well suited for Arabica seedlings. Fertilizers can and should be used. As fertilizer, you can use both ordinary manure and special mineralized compounds. Horn chips or bone meal (200 g per 10 kg of soil) is an ideal source of well-digestible phosphorus.

Coffee tree in the fresh air

The flowering of the coffee tree lasts from 2 to 10 days, the scent of flowers is not as strong as that of citrus.

Coffee beans have long been known as a means of invigorating. They contain caffeine - about 2%, organic acids, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, amino acids, minerals. Chlorogenic acid and ether-like compounds, which are formed during the frying of grains, play the main role in creating the taste and aroma of the drink, and the physiological effect is determined by the alkaloid - caffeine.

You need to wait until the berries are fully ripe. They will become cherry-colored, soft to the touch. Then, we do the same as on coffee plantations: we collect the seeds, wash them, separate them from the pulp and films, and dry them. Further options are possible: someone will try to distribute them or he sows himself. This is a gardener's natural instinct - to multiply what he has. Or you can fry and get the grain, from which it turns out a full drink.

Be sure to try your own coffee harvest. From the ripe berries, select the grains and soak them in water for 12 hours (this will clear the mucus). 7-10 days dry the grain. Then hold for 2-3 hours in the oven at t 70-80 ° C. Without these procedures, coffee beans will not get the desired taste. Chilled after drying the seeds fry, stirring constantly, in a pan to a light brownish color. Cool again and fry again, until dark brown. Only after these procedures, coffee can grind and make a drink.

Reproduction by cuttings

Plants obtained by cutting can bloom immediately after rooting; they retain all the properties of the parent plant, the fruits are larger and more numerous. However, coffee trees from cuttings grow more slowly than from seeds; they require crown formation (usually round).

1. To obtain cuttings, shoots of last year's growth from the middle part of the crown of the fruiting coffee tree, apical twigs are used.
2. The stalk is cut obliquely with two pairs of leaves; A branch of about 2.5 cm in length is left under the lower node, which is scratched from below with a needle to stimulate rooting.
3. The bases of the cuttings are placed in a solution of heteroauxin (a quarter of a tablet in 0.5 liters of water) for approximately 4 hours; then powder the lower cut of the stalk with charcoal powder.
4. Cuttings are planted vertically in a mixture of sifted peat and perlite, spilled with a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate; the petioles of the lower leaves of the cutting are buried in the substrate by half, not allowing the adjacent cuttings to touch each other.
5. After planting the cuttings, the soil is again watered with a solution of potassium permanganate and a mini greenhouse is built in a pot.
6. Put a pot with coffee cuttings on a bright place protected from direct sun, maintain the high temperature of the substrate (optimally 25-27 degrees).
7. Greenhouse regularly air, sprinkling cuttings; after about 40 days, their upper kidney awakens.
8. Transplantation of cuttings into individual pots with a diameter of 9-12 cm is carried out after the formation of a new pair of leaves. For rooted cuttings preparing a mixture of turf land, peat and sand (4: 2: 1) with the addition of wood ash. A shard with a convex side upwards is placed on the drainage hole of the pot, coarse sand is poured at the bottom of the pot with a layer of 1-1.5 cm. bright place without direct sun.
9. If buds appear on the rooted cuttings, they do not need to be removed: the fruits will be full-fledged and will not inhibit the development of plants.

The soil for grafting can be taken different. It is important to comply with two basic requirements for its structure. The mixture should retain moisture well and be breathable, since a constant flow of air to the root formation sites is necessary. Experience shows that the best results are obtained by a mixture of perlite (building material) and peat (1: 1), where the peat component retains moisture. It is best to take swamp peat from sphagnum moss, and before preparing the mixture, it must be sifted through a fine sieve. For improved air supply for rooting, add perlite (pearlite expanded sand). It has an absolutely neutral environment, therefore it does not require prior disinfection. Before planting the cuttings, both prepared components are thoroughly mixed, then the vessel in which the cuttings will take root is poured with this mixture. Strongly seal the mixture is not necessary. The prepared aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (pale pink) spills the mixture well. Thus, peat, which is a part of the mixture, is disinfected, and at the same time stimulates the best survival rate of cuttings.

The coffee tree does not have a pronounced rest period, so that the plant grows, blossoms and bears fruit all year round, it must be constantly fed every 10 days: 1, 10 and 20th, giving respectively 5 g of nitrogen, 7 g of phosphorus, 1 g potassium and 7 g of trace elements in 1 liter of water. As a nitrogen fertilizer, we use chicken manure, which is diluted in water and aged until it ferments completely. When there is no sharp smell and gas bubbles will not be released (it means that all the organic matter has decomposed), the solution is ready for use. Dilute it three times with water. It should be remembered that chicken manure is the most powerful nitrogen-organic fertilizer, and it must be used carefully.

In the greenhouse plants coffee tree from 1 year to 5, promising cultivation of coffee in greenhouses. Thus, in the GNSS, from each coffee tree growing in the greenhouse, in the third year, 100-150 g of dry seed weight is obtained. The plant gives fruit in room conditions.

Planted cuttings in a strictly vertical position to a depth of 2 - 2.5 cm. The prepared cutting is taken with two fingers and gently inserted into the substrate so that the petioles of the two lower leaves are sunk into the ground. It is noticed that in the place where the leaves of the coffee tree are joined to the bearing branch, very often roots are formed. Therefore, with such planting cuttings, they rooted almost 100%.

After planting the cuttings for better fixing in the substrate, it is recommended to shed it again with a solution of potassium permanganate. A prerequisite for rooting is a moist environment around the ground part of the cuttings. It is formed when the vessel in which rooting takes place is covered with a plastic bag. But it should not be tightly closed, there should be a small amount of air. To do this, a small hole is cut in the package and cuttings are sprayed through it during the rooting period, completely wetting the leaf plates. Planted cuttings put on diffused light. Direct sunlight is best avoided. The temperature of the substrate is ideally maintained at + 25-27 ° C. The higher the temperature of the substrate, the faster the cuttings take root. For example, at a temperature of + 21-23 ° C, the cuttings rooted from February 23 to April 10, and at a temperature of +25 ° C - from April 1 to May 5. However, the temperature above +32 ° C has a negative effect on rooting.

The first sign of rooting cuttings - the awakening of the upper growth bud. However, noticing this, do not rush to transplant the seedlings. Wait for a new pair of leaves to form on top. And then, digging rooted cuttings, you will see the resulting root system. It can be fibrous or elongated, with 2-3 stem-like roots.

Small particles of peat and perlite stuck to the roots should be slightly shaken off, but not rinsed under a stream of water, otherwise the seedling will be sore for a long time before it starts growing again. The earth mixture for planting rooted cuttings is prepared in this composition: turf, peat and sand (river) in a ratio of 4: 2: 1. You can add a little wood ash here. The planting pot is taken with an upper diameter of 12 cm. A shard is placed on the bottom with the convex side up and the drainage is made of coarse sand 1 cm thick.
As a phosphate dressing take a solution of superphosphate. Into the settled water pour granules of superphosphate and stir, heating the solution (for better dissolution) to a temperature of 50 °.

Good potash supplements can be obtained from the ash extract. To do this, straw ash (containing up to 46% potassium) must be stirred in lukewarm water. After settling daily, the potassium solution is ready for use. A coffee tree, like any plant, needs other elements (calcium, boron, manganese, iron, etc.).

Many people think that once a coffee tree is from the tropics, it needs the scorching rays of the sun all year round. In fact this is not true. Even at home on the plantations around a single coffee tree planted four shading plants of another species. In our geographical area, coffee should be kept indoors at windows facing south or southeast. Any sun peering into them in summer will not adversely affect the development of the plant. It is more difficult to provide sufficient illumination on cloudy and dark days in autumn and winter. To do this, we highlight the plants from November 1 to March 1 with a fluorescent lamp.

Coffee Tree Pests and Diseases

Many lovers complain - leaves turn brown. This is typical for indoor content at low humidity in the autumn-winter period. However, this is not a disease. And if the plant is put in a wide shallow pan with water, a more favorable microclimate will be created.

Sunburns on the leaves from the bright sun lack of moisture in the air.

Watering

One of the most important aspects of the care of the coffee tree is watering. If the roots are exposed to stagnant water, the leaves turn brown and fall off. All water should drain from the roots after watering.

Watering. Regular, in the summer - plentiful. Water should be soft, separated, without lime, warm (several degrees above room temperature). It is necessary to maintain a weak acidity of the soil. To do this, once a month, 2-3 drops of acetic acid or several citric acid crystals are added to the settled water.

Do not hurt him and regular spraying. Once a week (except for the flowering period), the tree can hold a warm shower.

With excessive watering, root rot often occurs, cortical growths appear on the leaves of many plants, cork-like spots (even the leaf surface can even completely crumble). In addition to excess water during irrigation, the reason for the appearance of such stains can be an abrupt change in temperature, a sharp fluctuation of moisture in the substrate (if after a strong drying of the soil, immediately pour it abundantly), minus light. With the correction of care errors, the formation of cork spots on the leaves ceases. If the most likely cause of stains on the leaves of coffee is excessive watering (because coffee requires moderate watering in winter), pour the substrate once or twice with a suspension of foundation (1-2 g per liter of water) - this will help the plant that has fallen in adverse conditions.

To restore the immunity of the plant, it is not forbidden to conduct a cycle of spraying the leaves of the coffee tree with warm water with the addition of “Epin” according to the instructions on the package.

Top dressing

In spring and summer, feed regularly (once every 7-10 days), alternating water infusion of mullein (1:10) with a full range of mineral fertilizers. In the spring you can increase the dose of nitrogen fertilizers, during the ripening of fruits - phosphorus, in the fall - potassium.

The main pests are scale insects, spider mites, and from diseases, black fungus. If in the winter in the room where the coffee tree is installed, the temperature will be within 10 - 12 C, then a black border will first appear on the leaves, and why the whole plant will die.

  • If the soil is not too acidic, the leaves may discolor.
  • The tips of the leaves dry out with a lack of moisture in the air.
  • The leaves turn yellow, brown spots of dead tissue appear on them in case of sunburn.
  • When excessive watering leaves rot and fall.
  • When watering with hard water, the tips of the leaves are slightly folded and brown spots appear on them. To prevent this from happening, water is softened using special tablets, or a bag of peat is kept in 3 liters of water.

Uneven ripening of coffee fruits as a rule in room conditions

How to make coffee fruit?
Fruits plants only with year-round care, which includes weeding and regular treatment of trees with fungicides and insecticides in order to protect them from pests and diseases, such as legume drills or coffee rust. The young plant begins to bear fruit at least in two years.

Collected coffee fruits should be a little dry and clean the pulp from the collected seeds can be dried and make coffee.

FRYING COFFEE HOUSES

You got green unroasted coffee beans. You can make great coffee to your taste with the necessary caffeine content.
As you know, the taste of coffee is not least influenced by the way coffee beans were roasted. Properly roasted coffee is a special art. This experience does not come immediately. But you can learn to roast.

Coffee roasting is so important that today the coffee producer is not the one who grew it and gathered it, but the one who roasted and packed it. In Italy, even there is a special Institute, which studies various methods of roasting coffee. The scientific name of this process is pyrolysis. As a result of complex chemical transformations, the taste of the grains is enhanced and improved. Scientists have found that coffee contains up to 2000 different oils, aromatic and chemical compounds. When roasting, they are activated, which later gives coffee its unique bouquet. Before taking the pan, select the best grains. Take into account, when frying the grain will evaporate moisture, so the mass of roasted coffee will differ significantly from the raw grains. Different cultures have different degrees of coffee roasting.

Arabica varieties are traditionally fried slightly. This method allows you to save subtle shades of taste and aroma.

The average degree of roast gives the grain a darker color. At the same time, oil is actively released, which gives roasted coffee a characteristic bitter taste.

The so-called dark roast is the most intense. This coffee tastes stronger than others. His taste is tart and strongly pronounced. Moreover, the higher the roasting temperature, the more expressive the taste. Some varieties with a dark roast become slightly sweet. But here it is important to observe the allotted time. If overexposing grains, the sweetish aftertaste will be lost.

In addition to these, there are other ways of roasting. As a rule, they are called by the name of the area or city where they are used. For example, Scandinavian (weak roast), Vienna (the aromas are fully revealed and butter comes out) and Continental (also known as double, the grains become the color of dark chocolate). In the east, grains are often tried to impart an exotic flavor. To do this, when roasting coffee add spices and spices. Here are some more tips. When the grains are removed from the heat, try to cool them as quickly as possible. Immediately after this, grind. In order for the coffee to become sugar-rich, you need to wait at least twelve hours for the gases that evaporate when it evaporates to evaporate. Roasted grains should shine. If they are dull, it means that the heat treatment time was insufficient.

What to fry coffee. For this there are special roasters. Before pouring grain into a roaster, try to warm it up evenly. However, in the absence of a coffee roaster, you can fry in a pan. The main thing is not to use the oven for frying beans. First, the grains will then be roasted unevenly. Secondly, you will not be able to mix and turn them over. The first automatic devices for roasting coffee appeared in the seventies. The heat treatment time in them could be kept up to seconds. The difference with roasters was that the grains were not heated directly, but were exposed to hot air. However, gourmets say that the taste of coffee prepared in this way is not at all what it is if you fry grains by the traditional method.

Keep and make coffee by the rules

1. A closed packet of coffee must be stored in the freezer.

2. Coffee should always remain dry (to prepare coffee, do not pour it with a wet spoon and store it in places that are easily accessible to water.) The place where you store the open coffee should be well ventilated, protected from moisture and light.

3. If the taste of coffee has changed, then check the status of the coffee pot, water filter. Also check the freshness of the milk or cream.

4. Spoons are different. If you have not only teaspoons in the table set, but also

dessert, it should be attentive to what spoon you take coffee. Agree, a drink made from a small teaspoon differs in strength from coffee prepared according to the same recipe, but taken in the amount of a dessert spoon.

5. When cooking coffee "boc" you should not forget that sugar is added after the ground coffee is poured boiling water.

6. If you serve classic coffee, then according to the rules of good taste, a jug of milk should be served to it. In order for each of your guests to be able to add it at will.

7. Milk, before serving or adding to the coffee should be heated. Otherwise, you can spoil the taste by cooling the drink.

8. If you are a connoisseur of the taste of the drink, do not add a lot of sugar to coffee. The optimal dose - a teaspoon

As soon as the coffee starts to rise, remove it from the heat and let it brew for a couple of minutes ..

The coffee tree is considered to be Ethiopia’s birthplace, and later coffee traveled around the countries and went to Europe, where it was successfully cultivated while caring at home.

The coffee family has about 40 species. The most significant are Liberian, Congolese, Arabian and tall. These are members of the Madrin family.

General information

The foliage of the coffee tree is not small, fleshy and has a greenish tint. Flowering begins, and the plant throws out an inflorescence resembling an umbrella and consists of about 76 flowers.

The shade of the flowers is white on small roots and they appear on young annual stems. The fruit of the plant consists of two seeds, a rounded shape, having at first a yellow shade that turns into green. And the ripe fruits of the coffee tree are red. When the fruit ripens, it is covered with a crust on the outside, and inside it is filled with sweetish and slightly sour pulp and a pair of seeds about 13 mm in length.

Grown coffee tree at home has useful properties. It is able to purify the air of harmful substances, increase and improve the energy abilities of a person, reduces and relieves stress and brings the nervous system in order.

Types of coffee trees

Arabian type of coffee , popular in growing at home, is a compact tree. The leaves are shaped like an elongated ellipse with a dark olive shade, glossy on the outside surface and pale on the inside. The inflorescences are small, about 2 centimeters in diameter, collected in a bunch. The size of the inflorescences depends on the growing conditions.

Flowers after disclosure are in a fresh state only for a few hours. But the buds unfold gradually not at once. After the inflorescences ottsvetut, the fruit ripens in the form of berries, in the ripe form has a burgundy shade. Maturation occurs approximately 8 months after pollination. Fruits in a pair resemble round beans. In height, this species reaches up to 5 meters.

It is a neat plant, reaching a height of about 85 cm. Abundant flowering and subsequently fruits well at home. The necessary design of the tree, you can attach with trimming and pinching the tops of the plant.

Also grown indoors. Its ripe fruits have a scarlet or sunny slightly orange tint. The length of its leaves reaches up to 40 cm, and the height is adjusted and the required shape is formed by trimming the crown plant. The inflorescence has a light shade and large fruits - berries.

Care of the coffee tree at home

The plant does not tolerate drafts and temperature extremes. By following the right care, you will enjoy fresh home-made coffee all year round.

Lighting coffee tree prefers a plentiful scattered. The best location will be the southern part of the room. Constant airing during the winter period and preferable cultivation on loggias or a terrace in a warm season are necessary. During the heating season, the plant must be located away from the battery to avoid drying of the tips of the leaves. With a lack of lighting, it is necessary to use an artificial-type lamp.

The air temperature for the plant in the summer should not exceed 25 degrees, and in winter should not fall below 15 degrees. If you do not comply with the temperature conditions of the content, the plant can lose foliage and throw buds.

Spraying the plant prefers regular, and in summer it is necessary for the plant to arrange a warm shower, it is good for growth and active flowering. Humidity in the room should be increased.

Watering in the summer is regular, giving only one centimeter to dry out from the soil layer, and winter time should be reduced by one a week. Water for irrigation must be soft and settled, without the content of lime scale, otherwise the plant may begin to hurt.

Coffee tree fertilizer

During the period of active development and flowering plants need to be fed once every 14 days. Feed for this is necessary with the content of potassium and nitrogen. Or a special fertilizer for azaleas.

In the cold season, the plant feeding should be removed completely.

Coffee tree transplant at home

Young individuals need a transplant constantly, that is, every year, plants up to three years are considered as such. Older plants must be transplanted once every two to three years. Capacity for plants required high.

After transplanting the plant, it should be placed in a slightly shaded place and allow time for adaptation, not forgetting to spray regularly. At the bottom of the tank during transplanting it is necessary to lay a good drainage.

Soil for coffee tree

The soil for the plant requires loose peat with acid reaction, coarse sand and humus and with the addition of crushed charcoal, all in equal proportions.

Trimming the coffee tree at home

Pruning plants produce as needed, remove dried leaves and stems, as well as form, the desired crown, cutting overgrown branches, giving them the desired length.

Coffee tree breeding

Coffee tree how to grow at home, many are asking this question. This can be done with the help of seeds and cuttings.

The tree of coffee beans really grow their own hands. Instead of soil for sowing take coarse sand or perlite.

Seed Coffee Tree

Before sowing, grains should be peeled and soaked in a light solution of potassium permanganate. After that we sow a couple of centimeters deep into the ground. Periodically sprinkling.

After one month, the first seedlings appear. When the first pair of leaves begins to appear, the plants are planted in separate containers.

Coffee Tree Cutting

For this procedure, shoots are cut off about 8 cm long with a pair of buds and planted in loose soil consisting of leaf, sod land and sand in the same proportion. After that, we plant cuttings there and adhere to the optimum temperature for rooting within 27 degrees.

Capacity with cuttings must be covered with a transparent film. Periodically memorable, open and spray. After rooting it is necessary to plant in permanent containers.

  • Why leaves fall at the coffee tree and brown spots appear   - This indicates a lack of soil moisture.
  • Necrosis of coffee tree leaves   - arises as a result of a lack of phosphorus and potassium, a lack of light or dry air in the room. Also, the reason may be a sharp temperature drop in the room. With insufficient fertilizer phosphorus plant slows down in development and leads to yellowing and falling off of the leaves.

The content of the article:

Coffee (Coffea) is also commonly referred to as the Coffee Tree, its learned botanical community ranked among the genus of evergreens belonging to the tribe Coffee (Cofeeae) and included in the Maren family (Rubiaceae). Basically, this representative of the flora in the wild grows on the territory of the African continent and Asia, where the tropical climate prevails, in the same place they cultivate coffee plantations everywhere. However, the real homeland of coffee is considered to be the land of Ethiopia, from where this plant and naturally drink from it, began its journey around the world. First, he came to Iran, and only then to the states of Europe. In total, you can count up to 90 varieties of the coffee family with fragrant fruits - seeds, which people used to call grains.

Most of the varieties of coffee are large shrubs or small trees, the height of which rarely exceeds 8 m. If we talk about indoor cultivation, here you should use only the shrub representatives of this genus. The leaf plates of a coffee tree are usually large in size, their surface is leathery, the color is saturated green. It is for such a green leaf mass that coffee trees are valued for home cultivation. Since the bush form quickly grows in height and width, they are successfully grown indoors. Of all the known varieties, it is the stunted arabica species that possesses such characteristics, but the Robusta simply does not fit in the rooms. Such a plant of arabica can be formed in the form of a real tree with a woody stem and a beautifully decorated crown.

In the process of flowering on the plant, small buds are formed that have white color petals with a strong tropical aroma. From them are collected inflorescences in the form of a false umbrella, resembling a bunch. Buds usually grow on annual shoots and in the inflorescence they can be counted from 8 to 16 units. Each flower has both male and female reproductive organs - these are stamens and pistils, and thanks to this content, the coffee tree is self-pollinating. And again, since arabica is capable of such self-pollination, it is recommended to cultivate it indoors, since a cross process is necessary for robusta.

After flowering, the most important ripening takes place, for which coffee is bred - the seeds. The ripening of the berries takes 3–4 months. When the ripening process is completed, the fruits are ellipsoid-shaped berries, painted in bright red or burgundy color schemes. Inside the fruit is from one to three grains. Each berry has such a short pedicel that it seems sedentary right on the shoot. The peel of the fruit hard and dense. The seeds are surrounded by pulp with a sweet-sour taste, the color of the seed material is predominantly yellowish-green with a gray-wool, before it is processed. The length of a seed can vary in the range of 8–13 mm. And even in the conditions of indoor cultivation, you can pamper yourself with freshly picked coffee beans.

Coffee trees fruit in the third year from planting, but the most abundant harvest can be obtained only in 6–7 years of cultivation. But preferably still greenhouse or greenhouse cultivation of coffee.

Agrotechnics when growing coffee at home

  1. Lighting  for a coffee tree should be good, but scattered, as direct sunlight will damage the foliage. Therefore, the side on which the pot of coffee will be placed may have an east, west, southeast, or southwest location. But on the southern direction of the windows will have to make a small shadow with light curtains or curtains. In the summer, you can take the plant to fresh air, but at the same time take care of the desired level of light. However, such movements do not at all like the plant, although they have a great effect on the condition of the crown, but there will not be many flowers and fruits.
  2. Growing temperature  Coffee should be kept constant throughout the year at a level no higher than 25 degrees, and only in the autumn-winter period it is reduced smoothly to 15–16 units and not lower.
  3. Air humidity. The plant loves moisture with adequate parameters. That is, on hot summer days you can arrange a coffee tree with warm shower baths, but not during the flowering period. The same is done when heating devices work during the winter period. When the plants are still young, to increase their growth every 2–3 days (in the heat of the day) they should be sprayed with a soft and warm water with a spray bottle.
  4. Watering a coffee tree  they spend it regularly, but, like many plants, it doesn’t like the substrate gulf, however, it’s impossible to allow the soil to dry in a pot - it’s still a tropical representative of the flora. In the summer, the soil should be moistened 2-3 times a week, and with the arrival of autumn and winter, this procedure will be required only once for 7 days. Water is used only soft and warm, slightly above room temperature - 23-26 degrees.
  5. Coffee fertilizer  are brought in the form of mineral and organic preparations. Most often fertilize the plant in spring and summer. Feeding alternate. When there is a build-up of hardwood mass, it is recommended to use drugs with a high nitrogen content. During the flowering period, a full mineral complex should be used, and phosphorus is necessary for fruit ripening. With the arrival of autumn and all winter fertilizers, the coffee tree is not disturbed. Some growers are advised to apply dressing for plants from the family of pink. Coffee also miraculously responds to the addition of a dry mullein to the surface of the soil in the pot. If cross-pollination is required, due to the absence of bees in the house and the wind, this is done manually. At the same time, the flowers are easily shaken or they are flown over the inflorescences with a soft bristle brush.
  6. Coffee tree transplant.  For several years in a row, transplants for coffee are needed annually, as soon as spring arrives, but the plant has not yet begun to actively develop. For adults, the pot is changed once every 2–3 years. Since the root system has sufficiently developed volumes, the pot should also be corresponding, the diameter of the container should be increased by 2–4 cm. A drainage layer is piled on the bottom.
  7. Substrate  Used for tropical plants. The acidity of the soil is low, and it must also be rich in phosphorus and organic matter. You can mix garden soil, peat, humus soil and coarse sand (the proportions are equal). Also, a handful of wood ash is poured in there for balance.
If the coffee tree is very stretched, then it is only then subjected to pruning.

How to propagate a coffee tree?

Get a new plant with coffee beans, you can sowing seeds or cuttings.

When propagating by seeds, it should be remembered that the material that is intended for beverages - will not work. Fruits must be fully ripe and fresh. And this method does not guarantee the preservation of all properties of the parent instance. If there are ripe home-made coffee berries, then it is necessary to carefully remove the seeds, clearing them from the pulp. Then they are washed in a solution of potassium permanganate. The substrate is prepared 14 days before planting and is made up of sod soil, peat and river sand, some ash can be mixed in. All mixed up and left to "go." The seeds are placed on the ground with the groove down and only slightly press into the substrate no more than 1 cm. Then the crops are well moistened and the container is covered with a transparent lid, a piece of glass or a plastic bag. Contain a container in a bright place, but without the direct rays of the sun. The temperature is maintained at about 25 degrees, you need high humidity, but at the same time daily ventilation. Then sprouts can be expected in a month.

As soon as a pair of true leaves appear, they pick a pictogram into new pots with a diameter of 7 cm. If the stem began to woody and crack, this is a normal process. Sometimes there is even a brown color or spots on the trunk, but this soon passes. The next time the pot is changed after a month, increasing by size. Such a plant will have only one stem, and then skeletal twigs are formed. The coffee will start blooming after 2 years from planting, and berries will appear only in the 4th year.

When cutting, cut the blanks of the branches in the spring period from the crown of the adult specimen, only the middle part of them is used. Escape need to choose last year's growth. The length of the cutting is 10–15 cm. It is placed in a growth stimulator for a day. Then they carry out a landing in a peat-sand mixture, not too deep in the upright position. Shelter in the form of a glass jar or plastic bag is required. Rooting place is needed without direct light streams and with a temperature of about 25 degrees. Daily airing and periodic spraying is required.

After forty days, you can see on the pinwheel cuttings of the kidney - rooting is normal. When a couple of new leaves appear on the branch, it is possible to transplant into a new larger pot with more fertile soil. In the new tank, drainage is needed, the place is bright, but without direct UV flux and periodic spraying.

Difficulties in the cultivation of home coffee and solutions

Almost all parts of the plant (some more less than others) contain caffeine, which serves as a kind of plant protection against pests. However, occasionally there is a defeat with a shield, a spider mite, a black fungus, and also a bean brewer or coffee rust cannot fail to give rest. The treatment is carried out with an appropriate insecticidal preparation.

If the heat drops to 10–12 degrees in winter, the foliage will blacken on the edge, and then the whole surface will become like this and the coffee tree will die.

Despite the fact that there are many varieties, some species are cultivated precisely for the production of fragrant seeds (colloquially, they are called grains), which then, after roasting and boiling, turn into a beloved by many drink - coffee. The most popular in this regard are two types: coffee trees of the Arabian and Congolese varieties. From the first arabica is obtained, and the latter, respectively, become robusta. Also, occasionally, to obtain grains, species of Cameroonian and Bengali coffee are grown.

The whole history of coffee began from the territory of the Middle East and has its roots in ancient times and the first civilizations of those localities. Although so far scientists have not come to a common opinion.

There is a version that the first tonic effect of coffee beans was noticed by the Oromo tribes - the ancestors of the Ethiopian nations. Only here there is no evidence that they knew about coffee in the lands of Africa until the XVII century - no.

There is a true, unproved and unconfirmed legend, that the shepherd of the Ethiopian people, Kaldim, around 850, was the first to see the effect of coffee beans. It was as if he noticed a strange excitement that enveloped his goats, feeding on some strange fruits of the bush. The shepherd decided to taste these nondescript berries - but they turned out to be completely tasteless and bitter, Kaldim spat out them in frustrated feelings. Apparently, a couple of berries fell into a kindled fire, and a divine scent floated over it. Then a drink was prepared from roasted berries, which is still popular all over the world to this day.

The cheerfulness that comes from drinking a coffee drink is provided by caffeine, of which there is up to 2%, as well as organic acids, carbohydrates, fats, as well as proteins, amino acids and minerals. But the excellent taste of coffee give chlorogenic acid and multiple ether-like compounds that appear in the process of roasting grains. The physical effect on the body is due to the alkaloid - caffeine.

Types of coffee

  1. Arabian Coffee (Coffea arabica)Also referred to as the Arabian Coffee Tree. The most common type, it is called Arabica. The native habitat is in the river valleys located in the Kefa region of southwestern Ethiopia. There most often you can find wild thickets of this plant at altitudes of 1600–2000 meters above sea level. This species is widely cultivated in Latin America, as well as in the lands of Indonesia, India and Brazil. It is noticed that at absolute altitude lower than 1200–1500 meters, coffee trees of this variety cannot grow, because they do not tolerate tropical heat and shading by other representatives of the flora. In those areas, it is customary to replace it with the Congolese coffee variety (Coffea Canephora), and the amount of precipitation should be greater than 1,300 mm per year. An evergreen plant can be either a shrub or a tree with a height of about 5 m (sometimes 8–10 m). The length of the taproot is no more than 45 cm, it is short and durable. At the trunk of the bark of a greenish-gray color scheme, crawling. Branches have wilted and sprawling outlines, long and flexible. The leaf plates are entire, lumpy, slightly wavy, oppositely arranged, 5–20 cm in length with a width of up to 1.5–5 cm. Petioles are short, hanging. The flowers of both sexes, white with a fragrant aroma, gather in an inflorescence of 3–6 buds. They can self-pollinate, either wind or insects do it. The shape of the fruit is oval-elliptical or almost spherical. They are a berry that, when ripe, reaches 1.5 cm. The color is yellow or dark red. Full maturity occurs after 9 months from the flowering process. The rind is dense, the seeds are paired with a greenish-gray color scheme. On the one hand, their contours are oval, and on the other there is a deep groove on a flat-convex surface.
  2. Congolese Coffee (Coffea canephora) everywhere referred to as Robusta or Robusta Coffee (Coffea robesta). It is translated as "strong", as it is highly resistant to pests and diseases, as well as high yields. It can usually be both a shrub and a small tree, varying in height from 2 to 10 m. The plant is quite durable. The taproot is shortish, and the overgrowing roots are located in large numbers in the layer of the substrate at a depth of 15 cm. The branches grow in a vertical and horizontal surface (they are fruit) after they die off in a natural order. On Arabica, they remain, and it is possible to remove them by trimming. The leaf plates are entire, with a slight waviness, arranged in the opposite order, they can grow by 5–32 cm in length with a width of about 2–8 cm. The petioles are short, often hanging. The flowers are distinguished by oboepole, whitish, often they are decorated with a cream-brown star-shaped pattern, possess a fragrant aroma. 3-6 units are collected in the inflorescence. Differ in self-sterility and can be pollinated only by the wind. The fruit is a rounded berry, when ripe, it will reach 0.8–1.5 cm in length. It is painted in a dark red tone, and can fully mature 10–11 months after flowering. The rind is very dense, the seeds are cast with a greenish-gray color scheme, they sit in pairs. Like Arabica with a longitudinal groove on the one hand, and the other has a convexity and smoothness.
The main secrets of growing coffee at home in the following video:

Coffee is the favorite drink of many on the planet. It has an invigorating effect on the human body, improves efficiency and fills with energy. But few people know that coffee can be grown on your balcony. Fans of this drink, do not think to see at home a plant called coffee tree. How to grow coffee? It is easy to do. The first step is to get the seeds, but remember that the seeds must be fresh, as the dried seeds will not germinate. But that's not all - before planting the seeds, you need to clean out all the pulp and wash them in a solution of potassium permanganate.

  Preparing the soil

It is necessary to prepare the soil and decompose the seeds at a distance of 3-4 cm. As for the soil, it should consist of hardwood soil and sand, in equal parts. Coffee beans need only be put on the ground and not sprinkled, because the grains can rot in the ground. After that, the seeds for the necessary care. To do this, they must be watered and, of course, covered with glass or polyethylene so that the soil always remains wet. But, also, do not forget to periodically air it - about twice a week, although you should see that the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees. If properly cared for, the seeds should rise in 2 months. As for transplanting, this is possible only after several pairs of leaves appear.

Where better to put a tree

Put the coffee tree should be in a well-lit place, but avoid direct sunlight. If the rays fall on the leaves, then there may be spots on the leaves, and this means that the plant has been burned. If such spots have already appeared, then the plant must be rescued - put in a less illuminated place or cover from the sun. If the spots do not pass, then the cause may be a draft on which the plant stands.

  Watering

Regular watering and spraying is a must for coffee, as this plant cannot grow well in a dry room. Otherwise, the leaves may dry out. If the coffee is already a little dry, then you can restore it if you arrange water baths. But it happens that it does not help, because the reason is possible in the root system, maybe you flooded your plant. Then leave the soil dry, not watering. It is considered to be quite normal if the lower leaves of the tree dry - this occurs as the plant grows.

  Possible diseases

There are cases when the leaves of coffee turn black - this can cause a lack of iron. Then it is necessary to feed the plant with some iron-containing fertilizer, or just stick a few nails into the pot.

There were times when coffee trees were considered exotic, but now such a tree can be grown at home. Of course, every coffee lover would like to have such a plant, especially since now it is no longer a problem. The coffee tree not only smells and blooms beautifully, but also bears fruit. Not every type of coffee can be grown at home, as some have very tall trees, which is uncomfortable in indoor conditions and requires special space.

It is best to grow a coffee tree, planting cuttings, but you can also propagate grains, only, as already mentioned, fresh grains. If you plant cuttings, it will be very easy to grow a coffee tree, but not many people know that by doing everything correctly, it will also be easy to grow from grain.

As for the variety, it is better to grow Arabica at home and if the grains are fully ripe. Almost a hundred percent guarantee will give seeds that are picked straight from the tree, and not purchased in the store. Store grains are unlikely to germinate. If the grain to break from the tree, then it should immediately be planted in the ground, as it quickly loses its ability to grow. The soil must also be selected very carefully - it must be weakly acid, loose and free from any debris.

Coffee beans must also be prepared for planting. To do this, it should be cleaned from the outer shell and put somewhere for one hour in a solution of potassium permanganate. After this time, the grain must be removed with tweezers. It is necessary to plant the grain in a small pot, since after growing, the plant can be transplanted. At the bottom of the pot should pour drainage, and only then prepared the soil. Coffee grains should be planted to a depth of 1 cm. Everyone knows that one side of the grain is flat and the other is round, therefore, coffee should also be planted accordingly - the flat side should be down and round on the surface. Thus, coffee sprouts will be easier to break through to the surface. After the grain has been planted, it should be watered abundantly and create greenhouse conditions. To do this, cover the pot with glass and put in a bright place. The temperature in the pot should not be below 19 degrees and not above 24.

Watering the grain is required every three days and only in the pan. The soil should remain constantly wet, so you need to check whether there is enough moisture in the pot. If it is not enough, then water should be more. When the plant begins to grow, you should not loosen the earth at this stage.

  Active growth

If everything is done correctly, in a few months you will be able to see the first processes. Then you can start to accustom the plant to room temperature. You can start with periodic airing. To do this, simply remove the glass for a while, only for a short time, and then cover again. After some time, the coating can be completely removed. If you manage to grow a coffee tree, then this is not a complete victory, as caring for it also plays a big role.

The finished coffee tree should stand in a place where the lighting will be diffused, and the air temperature in the summer of about 23-25 degrees, and in the winter of 15-17 degrees. It is also important to prevent the soil from drying out, because the plant may dry out and, in the future, die altogether. In the hot summer time, the coffee tree requires more moisture, so you should water it every day, and to avoid transfusion, you can put a container with water near the plant. Water that needs to be watered on the tree must be separated. In winter, it is necessary to water once a week. The coffee tree loves water, so it is advisable to sprinkle it daily with settled water.

This plant has another feature - it does not like drafts and stand near other indoor plants. When the tree grows, in the spring it should be pinned to stimulate flowering.

To achieve fruiting of a coffee tree, it is necessary to look after it correctly and constantly. To do this, we need to clean or weed in time, and also process fungicides and insecticides. These drugs are needed in order to protect plants from pests and diseases. As for fruits, with proper care, they appear no earlier than two years later.

If you take good care and know how to grow coffee, the plant will not only delight with its presence, but bear fruit, which is natural coffee.

Many believe that coffee trees do not tolerate neighborhoods with other plants, but this is not entirely true, because such intolerance is very rare. If the goal is to receive fruits, then the tree should be placed in a very bright place, as coffee loves light. In the hot tropics, coffee trees do not have much sun, they are more in the shade, but in our climatic conditions, the home plant should be placed on the southern window-sill. If you put a coffee tree in another, not so bright room, it will not grow well, and it will definitely not bear fruit. The coffee tree loves diffused light, and also does not like to change position. If you turn the tree, the leaves will grow evenly, but such a tree will not bear fruit.

  Top dressing

With regard to feeding, the coffee tree should be, during active growth, feed every 7-10 days. But, the drug should be alternated - once the water infusion of mullein and mineral fertilizer with microelements. In spring, you can water most of the nitrogen, but in the fall the plant requires more potassium. When the fruits begin to form, it is better to add phosphorus to the soil. The source of phosphorus is bone meal, which is well absorbed.

Coffee tree requires pollination, but in the house it is, at first glance, impossible. Although you can use a cotton swab and alternately dunk in each flower and move on to another flower.

  Transfer

Young coffee plants should be transplanted every year, and now an older tree can be transplanted in two or three years.

Coffee transplanting is simply a necessary process. This should be done in the spring of every two years. But, it is not necessary to take a very large pot at once, it is better to increase the pot by 2-3 centimeters each time. The pot can be narrow, but high, as the coffee tree has a very developed root system. It is important to intervene as rarely as possible in the independent life of the plant, not to cut it unnecessarily. You can cut the leaves or branches only if the tree does not fit in the room where it grows.

Seed plant multiplies better and easier to grow a full-fledged coffee tree. Propagation by cuttings is used less frequently. After the planting of the grain, the tree will bear fruit only for the third year, and it may even not bear fruit at all if it does not retain the properties of the mother plant.

The coffee tree is not durable, as from the constant fruiting the branches become bare and lose their strength. To rejuvenate such a tree, you can cut the crown to 8-10 centimeters from the ground and form a new one of these shoots.

  Growing with cuttings

If you grow a coffee tree from cuttings, it can bear fruit in the first year, that is, immediately after rooting, the tree can bloom. These cuttings retain all the properties of the mother trees, so the fruits are large and many of them. But, a tree from a cutting grows much slower than from a grain.

Cuttings are used from the escape of last year's growth, only from the middle part of the crown. They are cut obliquely with two pairs of leaves. To stimulate the formation of roots, at the bottom of the stalk is scratched with a needle. Before planting, the stalk is treated with a solution of heteroauxin, and then left in this solution for 4 hours. At the end of this time, the cutting is removed and the lower part is powdered with charcoal powder. Cuttings should be planted vertically into a mixture of sifted peat and perlite. Petioles, where there is a lower part of the leaves, are buried in the ground by half. Only you need to make sure that the adjacent petioles do not touch each other. After the petioles are planted, the ground should be poured over with a solution of potassium permanganate and covered with polyethylene or glass so that the petioles grow in greenhouse conditions. A pot with a coffee stalk should be placed on a window sill in the southern part of the room, but not under direct sunlight. The temperature of the substrate should be maintained at a level of 25-27 degrees. This greenhouse must be periodically ventilated by opening the glass for a few minutes. The first kidneys should appear in about 40 days.

Repotting cuttings is possible only when new pairs of leaves appear. If before that they planted several cuttings in one pot, then after the appearance of new leaves, they are already transplanted into individual pots. The soil used is a mixture of turf land, sand and peat. At the bottom of the drainage is laid out, and then the soil. The stalk is required to plant, water and put in a bright place.

If the cuttings are rooted and the buds have appeared on them, then they should not be removed, because they will not interfere with the development of the tree, but will only bring the first full fruits.

Fruit trees will begin to bear fruit only after year-round care, and this includes weeding, fertilizing and pest control.

Growing coffee trees is not so difficult. It is necessary to have either a large enough window sill or a veranda that is well insulated. This plant requires a lot of space, as the coffee tree can grow up to two meters. Of course, you can form it compact, but it is quite difficult.
