Cut off. When cutting, hold the glass cutter vertically in relation to the glass, pressing it from above with your index finger. Use a glass cutter to run along a flat rail or insulating tape. Start at the end. Run the glass cutter toward you, evenly pressing on the surface. Spend only once. Before breaking off, place a match at the end of the cut. Tap the notch gently with a hammer, so it will turn into a smooth break.

Take a file, for thin glass it is suitable, for it is better to take a personal one. Place a small jar of kerosene or turpentine to constantly wet the file. You can also use a solution of camphor in turpentine in the ratio of 1 to 10. Of the grinding bars, use emery and carborundum; By the way, the latter can not be wetted.

Begin to cut the glass along its edge. Work very carefully, especially with thin material. To obtain a straight edge, move the glass back and forth along the surface of the bar. Constantly wet the instrument in the prepared composition.

For this work, use old emery blocks and old files, as in sanding on the bars scratches are formed, and the file is blunt.

To perform the work, you can also take a wooden bar and wrap it with sandpaper. First use a coarse-grained, then change it to a smaller one. Make sure that the surface of the glass is not touched when machining the ends, otherwise scratches will appear on it.

Work on the processing of the edges of the glass must be performed in cotton gloves, and to protect the eyes it is better to wear safety glasses.

Edging glass - a time-consuming process, requiring the master of the utmost accuracy and accuracy. This procedure can be performed both on special equipment in specialized shops, and in the home with the help of an accessible tool.

You will need

  • - glass cutter;
  • - pliers;
  • - sandpaper
  • - carborundum stone;
  • - water.

Instruction

Remember: glass processing can be done in two stages: by grinding the edges of the glass and polishing it. In the process of grinding the edge of the glass remains rough, but at the same time it is leveled and becomes more secure. During polishing, the edge acquires a transparent appearance as well as a smooth surface.

Perform roughing the edges of the glass with pliers or glass cutter (more precisely, notches on its side). This procedure is carried out as follows: grab the 2-3 mm protruding glass edge with the used tool and, moving up or down, break off the cusps. If the protrusions are small, they can be “brightened up” by clamping and squeezing firmly with pliers.

Finishing is carried out by two methods: rectilinear and curvilinear. Rectilinear processing will allow you to get profiles of various types: trapezoid, flat, rounded, and also shaped

Edging glass is a fairly time-consuming process that requires maximum accuracy and accuracy. Ideally, special equipment is used for such processing.

But, here it should immediately be noted that the cost of such equipment is quite high, and therefore, at home, the processing of glass edges is carried out with an improvised tool - a file or a grinding block.

When glass edging is required

In the case when the cut glass is used for glazing of windows, doors or inserted into the frame, then there is no need for edge processing, of course. But if you plan to make glass doors in the bedside table, shelves or countertop, then there is no way without this process.

First of all, you thereby eliminate the sharp edges on the glass, which are unsafe when the glass is open. In addition to this, a made glass item will become aesthetically attractive.

In addition, after processing the edges, you will minimize the likelihood of chipping on the glass and the appearance of cracks. Thus, this procedure is simply necessary in this case.

Grinding and polishing glass at home

In order to qualitatively process the edge of the glass, it is necessary to consistently carry out two types of work - grinding with subsequent polishing.

To work will require:

  • bulgarian or drill (always with adjustable speed);
  • waterproof grinding wheels with varying degrees of grit;
  • felt or felt circles for polishing;
  • cerium oxide for polishing (you can buy it here - http://zm-tools.ru).

Glass Edge Grinding

To begin, process the edge of the glass with a grinding wheel with a large roughness (about 200 grit). At this stage, you need to get rid of the existing chipping and irregularities.

Then go to a less rough grinding disc (500-600 grit) and form the desired type of edge - European edge, "cascade", "pencil". At the final stage, the work is carried out by a disk in 1500-2000 grit.

To the note: polishing will be of higher quality if it is carried out on wet glass or even under a small water jet.

After grinding, the glass becomes smooth, but it is frosted and has some roughness.

Glass edge polishing

In order for the edge to become transparent and perfectly smooth, it must be properly polished. For this purpose, use a special felt or felt circle.

Apply the paste prepared from cerium oxide and water (consistency - liquid sour cream) onto the polishing wheel and gently polish the glass at low speed. Then gradually bring the pace to 1500 - 1800.

Instead of cerium oxide, GOI paste can be used, but the end result will be somewhat worse. But, in principle, it is a worthy alternative in this case.

Polishing is necessary to continue until the edge is shiny and transparent.

This is the simple way you can at home to process the edge of the glass.

It so happens that a completely new car already passing 2-3 thousand kilometers upsets a copiously scratched windshield. The factors that lead to this can be quite a lot. This and road debris lifted by the wheels of other cars, and the so-called "sand blasting" stones.

Road debris, sand blasting and stones can cause scratches on the windshield

Particular danger, in particular, create a brush conventional wipers. As a result, the driver is faced with a choice: to replace the damaged part, or to figure out how and with what you can polish the windshield at home. Based on the fact that the price of a new glass sometimes rolls over, we’ll dwell on the second variant of the problem solution.

How and what can polish the windshield of the car

It is important to immediately weigh your strength, since glass is not at all the material that is easily polished. At the same time, it is necessary to separate the concepts of polishing and grinding. The latter, by the way, is practically not used as a procedure for restoring automotive glass.

For the polishing work will require the appropriate machine. There are a large number of circles of various diameters for sale (they are selected depending on the area of damaged areas of the glass), as well as different degrees of abrasive ability.

For polishing the windshield will require the appropriate polishing machine

"Polisher" is convenient because it is possible to bring to it a channel of constant water supply to the area being treated. Wetting of the contact zone is difficult to overestimate, since it effectively levels the large temperature drops on the treated surface, which arise as a result of the friction force.

But at the same time, it makes no sense to buy special electrical equipment for the sake of polishing the windshield, because in this case the budget will increase many times over. Well, if you have the opportunity to borrow tools for a few hours with friends, a neighbor in the garage, etc. In principle, it is possible to get along with an ordinary drill, for which it would not be a serious investment to buy a special polishing attachment.

Windshield polishing video tutorial

Among other materials needed for polishing should be:

  • abrasive paste;
  • masking tape;
  • film to protect other surfaces of the car;
  • a set of microfiber cloths;
  • special glass cleaner;
  • manual spray for water;
  • color marker.

Phased polishing windshield at home

For the sake of polishing the windshield you should not buy special electrical equipment, because the budget of the venture will increase many times

You should always start work with a thorough car wash. In the event that even a normal grain of sand gets into the polishing zone, new, deeper, grooves and other damages will immediately appear on the glass. Also, ideally, the body should be covered with a protective polyethylene film, on which a “window” for working with glass is neatly cut. The edges of this window must be fixed with scotch tape.

If the damage zone is small, such as a single scratch, then you can do with the usual "frame" of masking tape with curved edges. Scotch clearly zoning the windshield and does not allow the spray from the polishing wheel to fly a long distance. In any case, the place of damage on the glass from the cabin side is outlined with a marker. This will allow not to lose sight of the scratched area even in the conditions of applying a polishing paste on it.

Eliminate wear from the "janitors" with their own hands

Scuffs on the front of the "janitors" do not penetrate deeply, the thickness of the damaged layer is only a few microns

Two "arc" from the wiper blades - a very frequent phenomenon on the windshield. Usually such defects do not penetrate deeply and imply the presence of a damaged layer several microns thick. It is possible to remove completely haze with the help of a ready-made abrasive wheel for preprocessing or a usual felt wheel with polishing paste applied on it.

In the case of using a paste, it is necessary to evenly distribute the composition throughout the treated area, and then start polishing by constantly moving the polishing wheel. It is not recommended to hold the machine in one place, as overheating and cracking of the material may occur. It is also impossible to prevent the polishes from drying out, if you feel that it has become harder to polish, wet the surface with water from a spray bottle. However, you should not overdo it with moistening, otherwise aquaplaning will start and you will have to make more efforts.

How can you bring the transparency of the glass to the ideal

When polishing, it is necessary to periodically stop and wash off the paste residues from the area being treated in order to inspect the results of the effort. It is important to visually analyze the surface from different angles and make sure that further polishing is necessary.

When the goal is to polish a relatively large area, it will be appropriate to draw conditional borders on the back side of the glass, dividing everything into squares. In this case, when moving from one cell to the second, it is necessary to do overlapping polishing, so that there are no untreated strips left and the restored glass has a uniform surface.

During processing, care must be taken that the polishing wheel is at an angle of about 5 ° relative to the glass. It is advisable not to raise the speed above 2000, the optimal indicator is 1500-1700 r / min. The total amount of time spent on polishing is usually 2-5 hours. After completing the procedure, you need to wash the glass with water and a special cleaner, then wipe it all dry with a microfiber cloth.

Get rid of serious scratches

If the windshield has deep damage, you should not hope for full restoration of the original look of the part.

When we deal with deep damages of a windshield, for example scratches from sharp metal objects, you should not hope for full restoration of an original type of a detail. If you desperately try to concentrate all your forces on a difficult-to-remove furrow, you risk either causing overheating and destruction of the windshield, or getting a noticeable recess in this place.

When you remove a significant layer of glass, its geometry changes. Thus, the driver can observe the formation of diopters, a kind of lens, which significantly distort the picture and negatively affect the perception of the road situation. Eyes from such glass quickly tired.

Experts say that you can only partially eliminate the negative effect of deep scratches, slightly smoothing its sharp edges with a polishing wheel. With good lighting, such defects still remain noticeable. Even the use as an alternative to filling the cavity of a scratch with a photopolymer will eliminate the problem only by 70-80%.

Sandpaper and other "classic" means for polishing glasses

Many of the old-fashioned way prefer to use to remove dullness, scratches are not modern paste, and the good old "sandpaper." For such purposes, a fraction from 600 to 2500 will do - depending on the depth of the damage (the more serious the defect, the larger the grain).

Work in this case is done manually, but it does not hurt to regularly moisten the contact surface with water. After roughing the problem areas, it is recommended to polish the glass with a soft impact paste. As a rule, this is the so-called diamond paste, which actually contains grains of diamonds with a size of 2-3 microns. Polishing can be carried out using power tools or manually.

You can also pay attention to the well-known in Soviet times and the 90s universal abrasive paste like “GOI” (based on chromium oxide), “Polarit” (based on cerium oxide) or “Crocus” (based on iron oxide). They are still sold in automotive products and can effectively be used to polish a damaged windshield.

Estimated price of polishing products

Below are the current price lists of some popular compositions for polishing the windshield of the car:

  • paste CeriGlass (Car Pro) - 500 rub. for 150 ml;
  • fluoropol powder (InSafe) - 600 rub. per 100 g;
  • paste GOI - 130-160 rubles per 100 g;

Many are wary of working with glass and are limited to simple operations like repairing a broken window. But glass is an amazing material, and not all craftsmen know that at home it can be processed no worse than in production. Secrets of Oleg Abramov shares.

The molecular structure of glass allows you to cut, cut, drill, grind, glue, engrave, bend and even pull it into threads!

Glass cutting is required for glass cutting. Most often used roller glass cutters.

And - glass cutters with such a handle were already released forty years ago. Their advantage is a heavy head, which is convenient to knock the cutting line.

B and C - cheap Chinese glass cutters. Sold under the brands Jobo, Kraftool, Stayer. They are difficult to use for cutting glass due to the poor quality of the rollers and the glass cutter head. On Kraftool, the damaged teeth of the head are clearly visible after breaking the glass.

D - Silberschnitt (Silbersnit) professional roller glass cutter. My favorite model. Versatile and reliable tool.

Professional oil glass cutter Touo TC-17 is good for curved cuts. If you need to regularly engage in sharp glass, save on glass cutters is not worth it. Let professional glass cutters are not cheap, but to spoil the glass will be more expensive. And the most expensive part in a professional glass cutter is a roller.

Rollers are made of alloyed stainless steel. They differ in the angle of sharpening, usually it is 130-165 degrees. Rollers with a sharpening angle of 130 degrees are used for cutting glass with a thickness of 1 to 3 mm, and sharpened at an angle of 140-150 degrees for cutting glass with a thickness of 4-10 mm. For glass thicker than 10 mm, use a glass cutter with a roller of 155-165 degrees.

Glass cut so. The cutting table must be level and stable. The surface is covered with a thin insulating layer, but ideally a thin carpet or felt is pasted onto the table. It is also more convenient to cut, and the lower side of the glass will not be scratched by fragments, which inevitably form when cutting. The glass is placed on the surface of the table, laid out, and a ruler is pressed against it.

Glazier's true friends - ruler, kerosene and hammer

The glass cutting ruler is a ruler with a strip of thin rubber pasted on the bottom, so that the ruler does not move when cutting. Or it is a special ruler with suckers embedded in it. This can be made independently.

So, we carry out with a glass cutter a cutting line.
Important! This line must not be interrupted and repeated. It must be drawn in one pass.

Then we move the glass off the table and gently knock the cutting line with a small hammer - this is another true friend of the glazier. Next, put the glass line cut on the edge of the table and break it off, pressing the board with clamps. Clamps are especially important if the glass is thick.

With some skill, you can stretch the cut line with your fingers, especially if the glass is thin.

So, we learned to cut straight lines. And the curves? To do this, first, instead of a ruler, we cut a piece - for example, from thick linoleum. The remaining operations are similar.

You can even cut a circle out of glass. This will require a circular glass cutter or a round template of suitable diameter. If there is a compass, then fasten the suction cup on the glass and draw a circle. Of course, without interrupting the cutting line.

Then we draw the rays from the circumference to the edges of the glass.

We turn over the glass, gently push the cutting line and the rays with the handle of the glass cutter. If done correctly, the workpiece itself will fall into a circle and side debris.

If there is only a mold-pancake at hand, then you can fix it on the glass with double-sided tape from displacement, and then also draw a cutting line around it.

Not just flat glass
For example, you can cut the bottle. They make interesting vases or ceiling lamps. For this, an improvised workbench is usually assembled from the base and the three bars. The bottle is placed between the bars and rotated with his left hand, while a glass cutter in his right hand draws a cutting line.

Then the cutting line is tapped from the inside with a pin with a weighting agent and the cut part is separated from the bottle.

If it is impossible to tap the cutting line from the inside, gently heat it with a portable gas burner. The main condition - the bottle should be with a smooth surface, preferably a cylindrical shape. Bottles of complex shape, angular, for example, are harder to cut.

We learned to cut, now we need to process the cutting line. Those involved in the stained glass business use Inland or Krištáli 2000 portable diamond cutters, which are used to quickly grind even a rough cutting line.

If it is necessary to blunt the edges of the window glass, you can use a diamond-coated sponge or a stone for sharpening knives, after it is moistened.

If polishing is required more, then a grinding nozzle on a drill with waterproof emery paper is useful.

We drill glass
Glass often has to be drilled. For example, to fix the handle on the glass door or hang a mirror.

Drills for glass are tubular diamond-coated or carbide spear.

It is advisable to use a drilling machine, because the drill is difficult to install strictly vertically, because of which the glass can burst when pressed. Place the glass on a soft lining - for example, on rubber or carpet. Drilled in a water bath. To do this, a plastic or rubber ring is fastened around the drilling zone, then water is poured into it and carefully drilled. Strongly press the glass can not. First, they drill to half on one side, then turn the glass over, combine the drill and the point of drilling, and drill out on the reverse side.

Engraving on glass
For drawing a pattern on glass, processing edges of small parts or marking, you can use the drill. They produce Dremel, Rgohhop, Bort, "Caliber", "Energomash" and other manufacturers.

It is important to choose the drill and nozzles for it so that the power and speed correspond to the operation being performed. Carborundum grinding tips are suitable for some jobs, and diamond-coated tips are used for fine and precise work. Save on nozzles will not work: cheap poorly centered and wear out quickly, because they used low-quality abrasive compositions.

Glass matting
Glass matting completely or locally. In the first case - for the manufacture of the ceiling, vase, stained glass element or for subsequent painting. In the second case - for drawing a pattern, because you still have to draw a drill on the glass. How to be the one who can not draw? We cut the pattern on the Ogassi film, glue it onto the glass surface, and then we subject it to local matting.

Ways matting The easiest one is in a sandblasting chamber, which can be found in glass shops and car repair shops. There are pastes for glass matting based on ammonium fluoride - Glassmoze and Glassmat. The paste is applied with a spatula to the glass surface, held for some time, and then collected back into the container or rinsed with water.

Gluing
It is surprising, but a properly glued seam between two glasses is stronger than the glass itself. The industry produces dozens of types of glass adhesive. Here are the main ones.

Superfluid glue is used for: gluing polished surfaces — for example, glass furniture. Such a seam is stronger than the glass itself, because bonding occurs at the molecular level. An example of such a glue is Bohle Verifix LV 740. For household purposes, Spanish CristalCeys is more available.

Viscous glue is used if it is not possible to create perfectly adjacent glass surfaces, as well as when gluing ground but not polished surfaces. For example, UHU or DoneDeal.

Two-component epoxy compounds are well known for bonding other materials. The most popular are Kilto or Rohir.

Glass coloring
The industry produces paints with good adhesion to glass. But in the manufacture of vases or plafonds it is easier to matte the glass surface - and then any paint from an aerosol can holds well on it.

Polished glass
We do not recommend polishing large glassware at home: it’s rather dirty. But the miniature surfaces are polished with drills with polishing tips and polishing pastes based on crocus, polyrite or zirconium oxide.

Products made by the above methods.

How to grind glass at home - Elfterra.ru

The glass is placed on an absolutely smooth surface (for example, a plastic tabletop of the kitchen table). The glass cutter must be held so that the index finger is on top, and the tool itself is in a position close to vertical.

Glass cutter work on a ruler or on a flat rail. Instead of a batten, you can also use insulating tape.

Start cutting from the far edge of the blade. The glass cutter is carried out on the surface - on itself - only once, evenly pressing on the glass. At the same time the glass should make a weak crackling sound.

When working properly, a good glass cutter on the glass should remain a thin, colorless trait. If it looks like a rough scratch of white color, then your movement was wrong or you use a blunt glass cutter.

Blunt roller glass cutter can be sharpened on a fine-grained emery wheel.

If the incision did not work out the first time, do not despair - turn the glass over and repeat the incision on the other side.

To do this, make a triangular needle file on the glass at the beginning of the intended cut, then heat the glass with a soldering iron tip a few millimeters from it along the line of the future cut until a crack appears from the risks to the heating point. So, gradually moving the soldering iron, you must go along the entire line.

To speed up the process, it is possible to cool the glass from time to time with a damp cloth.

For thick glass it is better to take a personal file, for a thin one - velvet.

Emery and carborundum sanding bars can be used from grinding bars, and the latter do not need to be wetted. When working, do not press hard on the glass; To cut the glass should not across, but along its edge.

The thinner the glass, the more careful you need to work.

It must be borne in mind that the file and the bars deteriorate greatly during such work: the file gets blunt, scratches form on the bars. Therefore, for grinding the edges of the glass, it is advisable to use old files and old emery blocks.

When processing the edge of the glass, you must wear cotton gloves.

The tip of the drill is heated until white, and then quickly pressed into the sealing wax and held until the sealing wax ceases to melt.

When drilling the tip of the drill is plentifully moistened with turpentine.

Small glass objects can be drilled in water.

To do this, it is necessary to prepare a paste consisting of large emery, camphor and turpentine. 1 part of camphor in powder is dissolved in 2 parts of turpentine and mixed with 4 parts of large emery. The resulting paste is applied to the place where you need to drill a hole.

A piece of copper wire is clamped into the drill chuck.

It is convenient to drill glass through plywood (jig), having guide holes.

The glass should rest on a hard and flat surface.

To do this, use one of the following methods;

On the glass around the marked hole make of clay or putty fencing in the form of a ring with an internal diameter of 40-50 mm and a height of 8-10 mm.

Corundum powder is poured inside the ring (it is easy to prepare it by grinding a piece of unusable emery wheel). The powder is poured with a small amount of water to form a liquid slurry, and then proceed to drilling.

On the surface of the glass, previously carefully degreased with acetone, gasoline or alcohol, pour a small hill of lightly moistened river sand.

With a sharply sharpened stick they make a conical indentation in it and clean the platform from the sand, which is equal to the future hole. In the resulting sand form pour molten solder with a temperature of 250-300 C.

After the solder cools, the sand is removed, and the solder cone is removed along with the glass circle adhered to it.

To cut a large round hole in glass, you must first drill a small hole in the center, then fix one end of the wire in it, and attach a glass cutter or diamond to the other end and cut a circle with it.

Then a glass cutter or diamond will follow along the ruler several radii from the hole to the circumference line. After that, take the glass in his hands and from the back side quietly hit the wooden handle of the hammer.

The cut parts of the glass should fall out.

To emboss the cut pieces of glass, preferably in water. This reduces the chance of damage to the treated glass.

To roughly trim the uneven edges after trimming, use pliers, which do not break off the protruding pieces of glass, and, gently pressing the edge of the glass with the ends of the flat lips of the instrument, gradually and gradually crush or crush the edges of the glass.

The technology of processing the edges of the glass is similar to the processing of the edges of the glass when it is cut.

After you cut the desired piece of glass, you need to process its edge. This procedure does not take much time, but requires accuracy and attention. So how to process the edge of the glass?

To the edge of the glass turned out as even as possible, it is necessary to cut it properly. When cutting, hold the glass cutter vertically in relation to the glass, pressing it from above with your index finger. Use a glass cutter to run along a flat rail or insulating tape. Start cutting from the far end. Run the glass cutter toward you, evenly pressing on the surface. Spend only once. Before breaking the glass, place a match at the end of the cut. Tap the notch gently with a hammer, so it will turn into a smooth break.

After cutting, proceed to processing the edges of the glass. After cutting, the glass has protrusions and notches, as well as sharp edges. It is better to process the edge of the glass on special machines, but at home this method cannot be applied.

Take a file, for velvet is suitable for thin glass, for thick it is better to take personal. Place a small jar of kerosene or turpentine near it to constantly wet the file.

For this work, use old emery blocks and old files, as during the grinding process scratches form on the bars, and the file becomes blunt.

Glass is one of the most practical materials. Invented in antiquity, it is used to this day, without losing its popularity. Today glass is considered to be a versatile material that is used both in construction and in interior decoration and in the manufacturing process.

At home, sometimes you have to deal with the problem of cutting glass. Using not complicated tools, you can do it. Glass is cut with diamond or roller glass cutters. You will need - glass; - glass cutter; - table; - the cloth; - oilcloth; - wooden ruler; - kerosene.

Edging glass is a fairly time-consuming process that requires maximum accuracy and accuracy. Ideally, special equipment is used for such processing.

In the case when the cut glass is used for glazing of windows, doors or inserted into the frame, then there is no need for edge processing, of course. But if you plan to make glass doors in the bedside table, shelves or countertop, then there is no way without this process.

In order to qualitatively process the edge of the glass, it is necessary to consistently carry out two types of work - grinding with subsequent polishing.

To begin, process the edge of the glass with a grinding wheel with a large roughness (about 200 grit). At this stage, you need to get rid of the existing chipping and irregularities.

Glass is a very fragile material, but from it you can make a lot of useful and beautiful things. Moreover, one cannot do without it: it is in the windows, dishes are made of it, and much more. And how is it made? If you still do not know, we will reveal how glass is processed at home, because it consists of several stages. Using the information from this article, you can try your hand in this direction, creating decorative objects for your home.

At home, they usually grind and polish this material. For high-quality performance of these stages it is necessary to get the following tools:

  • Drilling.
  • Glass cutter.
  • Pliers.
  • By file
  • Grinder with the ability to change the speed of rotation. This is very important, as it is necessary that the fragile material does not overheat.
  • Velcro nozzle with which the grinding wheels will be fixed.
  • Grinding wheels of different grain. Their surface should be emery, resistant to moisture.

Important! Glass is not only expensive, but also unsafe. In order to avoid injury, goggles are worn over the eyes and cotton gloves.

When the primary, roughing of the glass edge is performed, it will become not only smooth, but also safe. However, the surface still remains fairly rough.

Doing the glass edge with your own hands is done using ordinary pliers or a side cut-out of a glass cutter:

  • Glass should be grabbed in small sections, breaking off pieces of two to three millimeters in size.
  • Pliers are used to remove smaller protrusions. At the same time you need to firmly grab the material and gently squeeze the tool.

The choice of finishing method depends on the desired profile. It can be flat, shaped, trapezoid, etc.

Important! Using the rectilinear method, it is possible to set the desired angle up to 45 degrees. Thanks to the curvilinear method, the edge is given a shaped profile.

How to handle the edge of the glass at home?

  • Initially, a file is used for finishing. If the glass is thin, enjoy velvet.
  • Grinding bars can also be used. They can be carborundum and emery. To make the process easier and faster, kerosene or turpentine is used to wet the instrument.
  • For filing glass, especially thin, apply smooth movement.
  • If possible, the treated surface is placed under a water jet.
  • If it is necessary to obtain a straight edge, the material should be placed vertically, and then moved back and forth along the grinding bar.

Thanks to the grinding of glass, the surface becomes more perfect, the product becomes not only more beautiful, but also safer. Edge turns into a matte, slightly rough, greenish hue. Nevertheless, the appearance of her remains not very attractive, besides, the appearance of microcracks and small scratches is possible. To eliminate all irregularities, the edges are polished.

We already know how to grind glass at home, but polishing differs from this process, but only slightly. The most important thing - for processing the edges are not abrasive materials, and soft fibers. As a result, the edge turns into smooth and transparent, and the glass looks very aesthetic.

Solid glass products always have a polishing edge, as the design is even brighter. In addition, polishing is also performed if the glass is tempered, since then the material cannot be processed.

Important! Remember that glass is a very fragile material that does not tolerate overheating. Therefore, when working should not be in a hurry, you need to perform all actions carefully.

Polishing is done after grinding, using the fine-grained abrasive. This is a must-do, since the polishing belt will not be able to cope with the removal of large defects.

Important! After you learn to sharpen glass at home, you will notice that the residual stress on the surface is minimized. That is why during the transportation process the risk that the glass will be damaged will be significantly reduced.

  • When you are finishing, it is better to use old tools, as their surface deteriorates a lot.
  • Instead of a grinding stone, you can use a bar of wood, which is attached sandpaper.
  • Initially, tools with a coarse-grained surface are used, then transferred to a fine-grained one.
  • Do not rush, because due to the slipping of the tool may cause deep scratches on the surface.

As you can see, there is nothing terrible and complicated in the processing of glass. This can be done at home, using the minimum set of tools that every owner probably has.

How to process the edge of the glass

Works with glass are one of the most common types of work performed during home repairs - today glass is very popular in interior decoration and interior decoration. Working with glass is time-consuming and often almost impossible at home, for example, straightforward processing of glass edges with your own hands, not to mention creating a curved line, will be a task that only a master with tremendous experience working with glass and special equipment can cope with. . Nevertheless, some types of glass processing can be performed at home, thereby reducing the overall cost of processing.

Common types of glass processing

Most often glass is subjected to the following types of processing:

  • cutting;
  • edge processing;
  • drilling

Cutting from them is the most common type. Cutting glass is quite simple, but you need to observe a certain accuracy and have at least minimal experience.

Glass should be put on a flat and smooth surface, attach a template along the cutting line - this can be a ruler, a wooden batten or electrical tape. Then the glass cutter is taken, placed almost vertically at the beginning of the cutting line. You need to cut by yourself, making a glass cutter only 1 time. You should not push the glass too hard, you also can not create a point pressure - you should push with the same force along the entire length of the cut. If everything is done correctly, you will hear a characteristic faint crackle.

If the glass cutter does not cut through the glass, it should be wetted in kerosene. However, this is permissible only if the instrument has not lost its sharpness. If the video is blunt, it can be sharpened on fine-grained sandpaper. In a situation if the cut suddenly failed, you should not cut along the same line - you need to turn the glass over and repeat the cut on the reverse side.

Before you break off the cut piece, you need to tap the glass at the bottom with a hammer. If the cut is small, it is more convenient to break it off with the help of special grooves on the sides of the glass cutter or pliers.

DIY glass edging

Edging processing, including straightforward processing of glass edges with your own hands, should ideally be performed on special equipment, but the price of such a machine is very, very big, so only a few can afford it. Therefore, at home to handle the edge of the cut sheet of glass is necessary with the help of files or a grinding bar. Depending on the glass thickness, the file type is selected:

  • for thick glass - personal file;
  • for thin glass - velvet file.

During operation, the file should not be dry; ideally, it should be wetted with 10% camphor solution in turpentine, in the absence of such a solution, kerosene or even plain water will do.

Rectilinear processing of the glass edge should be performed by moving the glass back and forth along the fixed tool. At the same time you need to be extremely careful not to break the glass. It is impossible to move the glass across the instrument. It should also be borne in mind that with such processing the tool quickly becomes unusable. Therefore, it would be unwise to use a new expensive tool for processing the edges of the glass — an old file that is no longer used for precise work or a bar would be better suited for this.

Processing the edges of the glass should be in gloves and goggles that will protect the worker from damage by small glass filings. Because the main requirement for any job is its safety.

Processing the edges of the glass should be in gloves and goggles that will protect the worker from damage by small glass filings. Because the main requirement for any job is its safety.

Glass is a very fragile and very dangerous material, so when working with it you need to observe utmost care and accuracy.

However, this process does not require professional training and can be performed at home. The main thing is practice!

Before you start cutting glass (or a mirror), you need to prepare all the necessary tools.

For the work we need:

  • Glass cutter (diamond or roller).
  • Long metal ruler.
  • Pliers with rubber pads (for breaking glass).
  • Rubber hammer.

You also need to take care of the glass itself. It should be at room temperature, dry and clean. To clean the glass of dust, you can use rags or baking soda solution. This moment is very important, because when working with “dirty” glass, a split can occur not along the cut line, but in another place the glass cutter itself fails faster.

  1. Cut the glass on a flat surface. To do this, you can put it on a workbench or table, which is covered with a soft cloth.
  2. The cut glass should fall on the table surface with the entire plane.
  3. Next you need to attach a wide wooden ruler and at a distance of 1-2 mm. (for roller screw) and 3-4 mm. (for diamond), then hold the tool along the entire length of the glass, starting from the far side. The self-tapping screw at the same time needs to be kept perpendicular to glass.
  4. If everything is done correctly, then a thin, colorless trace will remain on the glass, and the glass itself should produce a characteristic crackle when cutting.
  5. If the glass is held together, and the cut line does not turn out to be smooth, it means that you are pressing hard on the tool, or you are working on the wrong side.
  6. Next, the cutting line must be shifted evenly to the edge of the tabletop so that it protrudes by 3-4 millimeters.
  7. Glass thickness up to 5 mm. break off with two hands a sharp movement to the bottom. At the same time hands should be located on the edges of the glass and protected by gloves.
  8. If the thickness of the glass is greater, then several light blows are applied along the cutting line with a rubber mallet, and then break off just as well.
  9. Passatizh with a rubber slip apply in the event that it is necessary to break off very thin part.

After the glass has been successfully cut on it, protrusions and nicks usually remain, which must be removed to prevent cuts or injuries.

It is best to handle the edges of the glass on special machines, but you can do this operation at home, but you need to perform this operation in cotton gloves.

To do this, take an emery board or an old file. If you use a file, you will need to prepare a small jar of kerosene or turpentine to moisten the instrument.

To process the glass edges at home, it is necessary to perform 2 actions: grinding and polishing.

For this action, a drill or grinder with a speed regulator is needed (glass grinding is performed at a low speed - 1200-1700 rpm), a special attachment with velcro and grinding wheels with waterproof sandpaper of medium and fine grit.

Work execution technology:

  1. First, a larger emery paper is put on the grinding wheel (100-200 grit) and we form the edge of the profile we need.
  2. Next, you need to put a disk with a grain size of 300-600 grit and repeat the previous operation, wetting the glass with a thin stream of water.
  3. After that, the edges are processed with a disk with a grain size of 1000-2000 grit.
  4. The last step is to polish the edges of the glass so that it becomes transparent. This is done using a soft felt wheel and a special paste (you can use regular GOI polishing paste). Polished glass is made using the same drill or grinder.

Important! Glass is a very capricious material and is afraid of overheating, so grinding and polishing work should be done slowly.

Glass processing at home | Do it yourself

The molecular structure of glass allows it cut, saw, drill, grind, glue, engrave, bend and even pull in the thread!

Glass cutting is required for glass cutting. Most often used roller glass cutters.

And - glass cutters with such a handle were already released forty years ago. Their advantage is the heavy head, which is convenient to knock the cutting line.

Rollers with a sharpening angle of 130 degrees are used for cutting glass with a thickness of 1 to 3 mm, and sharpened at an angle of 1 DO-150 degrees - for cutting glass with a thickness of 4-10 mm. For glass thicker than 10 mm, use a glass cutter with a roller of 155-165 degrees.

Glass cut so
