In this article, the reader is offered a list of indoor plants that are recommended by NASA for cleaning air at space stations. These plants can easily clean the air in ordinary apartments. I already wrote earlier about how houseplants work in a similar way. In areas where we spend most of our time, very often harmful substances are present, which are especially concentrated in the air after repairs. Various chemical compounds stand out from paint, plastics, carpets, cleaning products, as well as numerous building materials.

There are usually three unhealthy substances in the house:

  1. Formaldehydethat stands out from carpets, curtains, glues, paints, and more.
  2. Benzenethat stands out from plastics, synthetic fibers, lubricants, rubber, pesticides, etc.
  3. Trichlorethylenewhich is contained in paint removers, carpet cleaners, adhesives and much more.

Fortunately, nature has self-cleaning mechanisms. There are many plants that purify the air very well, naturally removing pollutants. In addition, there are technologies that allow increasing the efficiency of air purification by plants. About one of these technologies, among others, I wrote earlier in the article.

Tip: For every 10 m2 of premises you must have at least 1 indoor plant in a pot with a diameter of 15 cm or more. Instead of arranging single plants in a room, it is better to group the plants, this is both beautiful and better for air quality. If there are children and / or pets in the house, before purchasing each plant, it is first necessary to find out whether they will not be dangerous for them.

A two-year NASA study conducted in the late 1980s identified indoor plants that cleanse the air of the above benzene, formaldehyde, and / or trichlorethylene. Here I will discuss in more detail 10 of them.

1. Spathiphyllum of Wallis (Spathiphyllum wallisii)

   Wikimedia Commons / Jerzy Opioła / CC BY-SA 3.0

To maximize the effectiveness of the plant, dust must be removed from the foliage. Flowers are also a great addition to the remarkable qualities of this plant.

Care: Spathiphyllum loves shade, does not tolerate bright light, requires high humidity. The soil should be slightly wet; in spring and summer, it can be fed with a liquid universal fertilizer.

Eliminates:  formaldehyde, benzene, trichlorethylene, xylene, ammonia, and more.

2. Dracaena

  Wikimedia Commons / BotBln / CC BY-SA 3.0

Including:

  • Dracaena marginata (Dracaena marginata),
  • Fragrant dracaena (Dracaena fragrans "Massangeana"),
  • Dracaena Derimskaya Janet Craig, (Dracaena deremensis "Janet Craig"),
  • Dracaena Varneki (Dracaena deremensis "Warneckii")

These are plants of different shapes and sizes. Fragrant Dracaena “Massangeana” reaches a height of 1.5 m and has a beautiful yellow strip on the leaves. Dracaena Marginata - one of the most common varieties of dracaena, can reach 3 m in height, it resembles a miniature palm tree.

Care:  Different types of dracaenas relate differently to light. Before purchasing, find out the preferences of the plant. The soil should be moist but not soggy. For dracaena deadly water in the pan. In summer and spring, you can fertilize the universal liquid fertilizer.

Eliminates:  formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, benzene, trichlorethylene.

3. Chrysanthemum garden (Chrysantheium morifolium)

  Wikimedia Commons / Prenn / CC BY-SA 3.0

As the name implies, this is not a houseplant, it is a popular fall-flowering decorative culture. With proper care, it blooms for six weeks. After the plant has faded, it can be disposed of in a compost heap. I wrote about how to make compost earlier in.

Care:  Chrysanthemums love bright, but indirect light. The soil should be wet and check it better every other day. Fertilize the plant is not necessary, because it will not re-bloom.

Eliminates:  formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, ammonia.

4. Bamboo palm or Hamedorea (Chamaedorea sefritzii)

  Wikimedia Commons / KENPEI - KENPEI / CC-BY-SA-2.1-jp

Light and elegant - the definitions that best fit this palm. It is 1-2 meters tall, it emits moisture into the air, which makes it particularly useful during the heating period, when the air in the room is especially dry.

Care:  Although this palm tree loves bright light, it should not be placed in direct sunlight. The soil should be wet. During the summer, it is better to feed monthly with a liquid universal fertilizer.

Deletes:  formaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide, xylene, chloroform, and other pollutants.

5. Epipremnum golden (Epipremnum aureum)

An unpretentious care vine, reaching a length in the room of 1.8-2.4 m (no longer recommended). Epipremnum golden is one of the most effective indoor plants that purify the air.

Care:  Epipremnum golden grows in any light, but does not like direct sunlight. Watering is necessary when the earth becomes dry to the touch. It is better to fertilize it monthly with a universal liquid fertilizer and remove the whiskers when the plant becomes too long.

Deletes:  formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, benzene, carbon monoxide, and other pollutants.

6. Ivy ordinary, Ivy curling or Hedera (Hedera helix)

  Wikimedia Commons / Queerbubbles / CC BY-SA 3.0

Common ivy is a curly shrub, well adapted to room conditions. It is easily grown in hanging pots, and is an excellent choice for rooms with low light. This plant is recommended for the removal of allergens such as mold and animal excrement.

Care:  varieties with green leaves grow well in bright indirect light and in low light. Varieties with pale, variegated leaves require bright, diffused light. The plant must be watered well and the ground kept moist; watering is reduced in winter. During the period of growth it is better to water with liquid fertilizer.

Deletes:  benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichlorethylene, and other pollutants.

7. Aglaonema moderate or Aglaonema modest (Aglaonema modestum)

  Wikimedia Commons / Mangostar / CC BY-SA 3.0

Evergreen perennial plant from tropical forests in Asia. Gives fruits - red berries that enhance the decorative qualities of the plant.

Care: grows in well-drained soil, likes diffused light and high humidity. The plant can be put in a pan with water, placing the pot so that it does not touch the water. Watering moderate, before watering the top layer should dry. During the growing season is better to feed a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Removes: benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichlorethylene, and other pollutants.

8. Ficus rubber or Ficus elastica (Ficus elastica)

Wikimedia Commons / Fanghong / CC BY 2.5

In the wild, this tree reaches a height of 30-40 m. The leaves of the plant are usually wide, dark green and shiny, are variegated. Aerial roots are often twisted around the trunk, forming interesting intricate shapes. Tests have shown that rubber-bearing ficus is especially effective in removing formaldehyde from the air.

Care: grows in bright ambient light. Watering should be moderately after the soil dries out a bit. Nitrogen fertilizers apply monthly during growth. Cutting may be necessary to reduce the size of the tree. Leaves periodically need to wipe with a damp cloth.

Deletes:  carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichlorethylene and other pollutants.

9. Chlorophytum crested (Chlorophytum comosum)

  Wikimedia Commons / Eurico Zimbres / CC BY-SA 2.5

This is the most unpretentious houseplant - you need to really try to make it die. It has green or white-green narrow leaves and hanging a mustache with small spikes.

Care:  grows in the light and in the shade. You can water it rarely, then it takes moisture from the roots. If the water is good, it grows.

Deletes:  benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, xylene and other pollutants.

10. Sansevieria Three-Striped or “Pike Tail” (Sansevieria trifasciata “Laurentii”)

Wikimedia Commons / Peter A. Mansfeld / CC BY 3.0

Durable and hardy indoor plant. It has fleshy, hard, long, dark green leaves with horizontal, lighter stripes.

Care:  prefers a bright light. Requires moderate watering during growth, the top layer of soil should dry out. In winter, watering is limited, but do not allow complete drying of the soil. During the growth period, you can feed monthly with a universal liquid fertilizer.

Deletes:  formaldehyde and other pollutants.

Also among the plants that purify the air well, researchers from NASA point out:

  • Benjamin Ficus (Ficus benjamina);
  • Philodendron climbing (Philodendron scandens);
  • Philodendron home (Philodendron domesticum);
  • Philodendron biconicular (Philodendron bipinnatifidum);
  • Gerber Jamson (Gerbera jamesonii).

Houseplants can significantly improve air quality, and can make a home truly cozy and comfortable. Of course, caring for plants requires time and effort, but you can choose the least capricious of the plants listed above. In addition, to protect yourself and your loved ones, you can make a little effort.

Air purifying plants are becoming more popular. After all, we live in the modern world, and, as a rule, it is simply not realistic to have clean air in an apartment, even if you air the apartment regularly. When airing into our apartment, air comes in from the street, and there is a huge amount of exhaust gases and city dust in it. In addition, in our apartment there is also furniture, laminate, linoleum, plastic panels and a lot of different equipment. All this saturates the air in the apartments and offices with toxic compounds: benzene, toluene, phenol, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia.

But still there are household chemicals, detergents and cleaning products that also adversely affect our body. Unfortunately, living in the city, there is no opportunity to regularly go to the forest for a walk, to enjoy the fresh air. However, there is a great opportunity to create a green corner at home, which will clear the air of various pollutants. Each indoor plant cleans the air, but there are certain plants that cope with any pollution more intensively. I will write in my article about the most popular, unpretentious plants that purify the air.

Air purifying plants:

Today I will list indoor plants that can help us purify the air of our homes.

Indoor plants, in themselves, are beautiful and decorate our house with this, often giving the house an exotic touch.

But what can you say about the fact that indoor plants can also improve the quality of the air we breathe and limit household pollution?

But it is so!

By the end of the 80s, scientists conducted research on the possibility of indoor plants to clean the air.

Studies have shown very interesting results: plants not only absorb photosynthesis through carbon dioxide and release oxygen, but many of them are able to neutralize volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in our homes, thanks to metilotrofi enzymes.

Let's take a closer look at the plants for air purification in our house.

1) Sansevieria  (“Laurentii” Sansevieria trifasciata) or, as the people call it, the language of the mother tongue.

This indoor plant is one of the most effective for air purification.

It is able to filter and make formaldehydes harmless, which are part of many cleaning products used by us in everyday life.

Houseplants that purify the air in the house - Azalea.

7) Azalea  (Rhododendron simsii)

This large flowering shrub is ideal for controlling formaldehydes contained in plywood and foam.

Its filtering ability even increases if you put the bush in a cooler place, so long as this place is well lit.

Read more about this beautiful plant in my article on. You are welcome, follow the link.

11) Philodendron  (Philodendron oxycardium)

Houseplants that purify the air in the house - philodendron

On the other hand, philodendron has a very strong filtering ability of pollutants, in particular formaldehydes.

12)  Bamboo palm  (Chamaedorea sefritzii)

Houseplants that purify the air in the house - bamboo palm.

This small palm tree grows well in shady places and often produces flowers and small fruits.

This palm tree is one of the best natural filters against benzene and trichlorethylene, but it can also neutralize formaldehyde.

13) Spathiphyllum(Spathiphyllum Mauna Loa)

Houseplants that purify the air in the house - spathiphyllum.

Spathiphyllum invincible in the fight against the most common volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichlorethylene, but also effective with toluene and xylene.

This lily can grow in dim light and with regular watering: once a week. This is enough to constantly bloom white unusual colors.

Let us consider in more detail what harmful substances may be present in the house:

  • Formaldehyde irritates the skin, eyes and respiratory system. It is contained in adhesives, paints, chipboard furniture and carpets.
  • Benzene emit plastic and synthetic products. Using a gas stove in the kitchen also sometimes causes this compound to form. Benzene can cause anemia, leukemia, liver disease, kidney problems, as well as diseases of the circulatory and nervous system.
  • Trichlorethylene is contained in cleaning products, it often causes diseases of the liver, nervous system and skin.
  • Ammonia is harmful to the respiratory tract and skin. The reason for its formation in the room can be industrial solvents and various detergents.

Household plants qualitatively filter the air and eliminate hazardous compounds, thanks to volatile production - substances that destroy viruses and pathogens. In the daytime, in the process of photosynthesis, decorative indoor cultures absorb carbon dioxide and saturate the space with oxygen.

If you look at the photos of modern bedrooms, you can see that they are often decorated with lots of flowers. However, the abundance of green vegetation does not contribute to the creation of a favorable microclimate in the room for rest.

In the evening and at night, the plants begin to absorb oxygen, so they should be placed in a dosed quantity. In one room it is recommended to install 5 or 6 pots with flowers. Flowerpots should not be set apart from each other, group space compositions will allow space to be effectively cleared of harmful toxins, such a mini-greenhouse will look very nice and picturesque.

Important nuances

For placement in the bedroom, cultures that emit essential oils are optimal for getting rid of insomnia and depression.
Living plants must be present in the kitchen, because in this area usually accumulates a lot of smoke and soot.

Leaves should be wiped regularly to prevent dirt and dust particles from accumulating on them.

When choosing a particular culture, one should find out if it does not contain hazardous substances that can harm children or pets. For example, in the nursery it is not recommended to place potted flowers that have too strong a fragrance:, lilies, gardenias. Ficus and dieffenbachia contain poisonous juice, so they should not be installed in the baby’s room either.

Indoor air purifying plants

Almost all domestic flora has good air-cleaning properties, however there are cultures that most effectively cope with various contaminants. So, what flowers are recommended to be placed in the house to create a favorable microclimate?

This culture has many beneficial properties, it absorbs carbon, saturates the air with oxygen and purifies it from formaldehyde. If you look at the photo of the flower, you can see that it looks quite simple, however, hanging it on the original support, you can turn it into a stylish and unusual decor element.

A beautiful flower will not only decorate the room with its aesthetic appearance, but also clean it from mold spores and harmful compounds (formaldehyde, trichlorethylene).

Bright decorative culture will perfectly fit into the interior of a bedroom or living room, and will decorate with its appearance any photo. Gerbera not only has an attractive appearance, but also qualitatively filters the air, releasing oxygen and absorbing benzene, a substance hazardous to health.

Citruses

Oranges, lemons and other types of citrus fruits fill the space with fresh aroma, have disinfecting properties and contribute to the destruction of harmful bacteria. Fruit trees emit phytoncides and natural essential oils that have a beneficial effect on well-being and relieve depression and insomnia.

Begonia has excellent moisturizing and antimicrobial properties, and in addition, provides reliable protection against electrical devices with harmful radiation. Decorative culture is also recommended to be installed in rooms where detergents are often used, it intensively absorbs substances secreted by various household chemicals. It should be placed in the penumbra, as it is one of and water 1 or 2 times a week.

Due to the large dense foliage ficus perfectly filters the air, cleaning it from dust and saturating it with oxygen. Indoor flowers are best suited for rooms where chipboard furniture is installed or any synthetic materials are present.

Flower culture has excellent air purifying properties, effectively combating the compounds contained in paints and varnishes. It is recommended to place it in rooms in which parquet is laid or in houses located near large manufacturing enterprises. Dieffenbachia produces phytoncides that destroy staphylococci, harmful bacteria that cause many respiratory diseases.

The flower provides protection against many dangerous compounds, the only exception is ammonia. In addition, it is recommended to install it near the computer monitor, which emits such a harmful substance as xylene.

Aloe

This culture can be found in many homes, because it not only filters air quality, but is also used to treat the common cold and colds. Aloe produces phytoncides that remove formaldehyde released from furniture by chipboard, as well as activate the brain and help remove physical fatigue.

Geranium

Houseplants of the geranium family have a very beautiful scenic view, in order to make sure of this, it is enough to look at the photos of the interiors decorated with these bright colors. They contain essential oils that allow you to effectively deal with various bacteria and microorganisms. Decorative culture helps to relax the nervous system, relieves insomnia and positively affects the overall condition of the body. However, geranium can be placed in an apartment only if you and your family members are not allergic to it.

Pelargonium

Pelargonium is one species of geranium. It secretes turpentine and menthol - active substances that are effective against staphylococci and streptococci. Due to the essential oils contained in the flower, it not only has high antimicrobial properties, but also has a calming effect on the nervous system.

Golden lotus

An unpretentious and durable culture has excellent air cleaning properties, it absorbs toluene, benzene, xylene, formaldehyde and many other harmful compounds. A distinctive feature of the flower - curly long stems, it can grow in any light, but it should be protected from direct sunlight. Houseplants in the form of vines will look appropriate on the top shelves or in beautiful hanging vases.

Curly culture will give the interior a picturesque look and allow you to clear the air of harmful compounds. English ivy will help to effectively eliminate trichlorethylene, benzene, salts of heavy metals and other substances hazardous to health. Evergreens can be placed in areas with different illumination, especially effectively they will look at the background of bright contrasting walls.

Bamboo palm perfectly moisturizes the air, and also filters it, absorbing carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, xylene and other dangerous substances. The exotic tree will decorate with its unusual appearance any interior. The length of a palm tree can be up to two meters, it is recommended to install it in a well-lit place that does not fall into direct sunlight.

Laurel

Noble laurel - a culture common in Europe, in Russian houses it can be found infrequently. Despite the fact that she looks simple enough, it is distinguished by high medicinal and antimicrobial properties. The flower qualitatively eliminates bacteria and dust particles, and also provides effective assistance in various diseases.

Chrysanthemum

Decorative culture will decorate with its elegant appearance any room and clean the air from substances released by detergents, inks and adhesives. In order to provide chrysanthemum full growth, it must be placed in a brightly lit and well-ventilated place.

Azalea

Azalea will allow to clean the living space of formaldehyde, which emit materials from chipboard, and ammonia contained in cleaning products. It is recommended to place it in the bathroom, toilet, in the kitchen and in other areas where household chemicals are often used.

Perennial plants adorn the leaves with variegated patterns. Tropical culture imported from South Asia, it is effective in the fight against formaldehyde, trichlorethylene, benzene and many other substances. The flower grows well in conditions of high humidity, it should be regularly watered and sprayed with leaves with a spray gun, removing dust particles from them.

Madagascar palm tree

Areca is an exotic decorative tree, thanks to its unusual appearance, it will turn into the most spectacular interior detail. Palm perfectly moisturizes and filters the air, absorbing trichlorethylene, xylene, benzene and carbon monoxide. It should be protected from drafts and installed in places far from direct sunlight.

The flower is not only distinguished by good air cleaning properties, but also provides protection from electromagnetic radiation. It is recommended to place it in rooms in which there is a lot of household and computer equipment.

Sansevieria

"Teschin" language - unpretentious and easy to care for a flower that is not afraid of the sun's rays and does not need frequent watering. What are the beneficial properties of this culture? It enhances immunity and absorbs harmful compounds that can be harmful to health, as well as cause fatigue and discomfort.

Philodendron

Curly culture has high filtration properties, effectively eliminating formaldehyde and other compounds. However, it contains toxic substances, so it is not recommended to buy it if there are small children or pets living in the house.

Asparagus eliminates many hazardous compounds, including heavy metals. In the care, it is quite whimsical, it is recommended to place it in a well-lit area and regularly water it.

Umbrella tree is perfect for installation in rooms impregnated with the smell of cigarette smoke. It intensively absorbs nicotine and tar contained in tobacco. In addition, the chefler increases the level of humidity and eliminates substances such as toluene, benzene and formaldehyde.

Chrysolidocarpus

This culture is one of the most effective means to combat toxins, it absorbs benzene, trichlorethylene and formaldehyde. Chrysolidocarpus perfectly regulates the humidity in the room and is resistant to various pests. The flower is unpretentious in care, it is recommended to place it in semi-dark areas.

In order to create a favorable microclimate in the house, it is not at all necessary to equip a large greenhouse in it; it is enough to purchase several flowers from the list. Living plants will not only decorate the interior with their picturesque views, but will also ensure the health and safety of your loved ones.
