Daylily is often called the "perfect perennial" for many positive qualities. Bright flowering, a variety of varieties and colors, resistance to drought and heat, undemanding care, all these advantages made the flower one of the favorite plants of landscape designers and flower growers. But how to grow a daylily? Planting of this culture should be carried out taking into account the rules, without which it will not be possible to get a long lush bloom.

Daylily - immaculate unpretentious perennial.

The genus Daylily has about 60 thousand varieties, which are replenished annually with new hybrids. In the period of flowering on one flower stalk, 2-3 flowers open daily, which dry up in the evening, and new buds appear in their place. There are night varieties of daylilies that bloom throughout the night. If you like evening walks in the garden, pay attention to these views.

The shapes and shades of daylily flowers are diverse. Usually the plants reach 45 cm - 1.25 m in height. Their basal leaves are two-row, in the form of a broad line, pointed at the end, very highly decorative. The total duration of flowering - 1-5 weeks. Depending on the variety, flowering occurs in the period from early spring to late autumn.

Where and how best to plant a daylily?

Plant daylilies in early spring or early autumn, taking into account the climatic features of the area. The plant should be able to root well before the first frost.

Daylily prefers fertile loam and well-drained soil. Add organic matter to heavy soil and clay or compost to too light. If there is little space for planting, you can put the plants in containers.

  The terrain must be sunny or partially shaded. The lighter bloom, the more sunny color is required. If the daylily lacks the sun, it grows poorly and stops blooming.

Planting a daylily:

  • before planting we dip the seedling root into a solution of water and mineral fertilizer;
  • remove dried or diseased roots;
  • prune leaves to 15 cm;
  • digging holes slightly larger than the root;
  • at the bottom of the holes we fill the soil mixture with soil, compost, organic fertilizer, peat and sand;
  • we place the seedling in the hole so that its basal neck is 2-2.5 cm below ground level;
  • we sprinkle the roots with the prepared soil mixture, we fall asleep with earth, slightly compacted;
  • water the soil, and, if necessary, mulch the soil.

We plant seedlings at a distance of 45-65 cm from each other. We leave more space for fast-growing hybrids - up to 80-90 cm.

How to propagate daylily?

Popular daylily breeding methods are dividing a bush and transplanting air layering. Planting seeds is used more often in breeding, as this method is not always suitable for preserving the varietal characteristics of the plant.

When to divide and transplant daylilies?

The method of separation of the bush is used every 5-7 years, when it is necessary to transplant the old plant: while reducing the decorative characteristics and deterioration of the quality of flowering. Allowable time for transplantation - late autumn (1.5 weeks before frost), or early spring (early-mid-April).

How to propagate the daylily by dividing the bush:

  • we dig up a bush, not especially trying to be delicate;

  • we wash the roots, divide it into delenki manually or with a knife;

  • root slices are treated with fungicide;

  • transplant delenki to a new place, if necessary, mulch the soil.

  • With proper planting, strong and strong delenki bloom in the first year after placing in open ground.

How to propagate daylily by air layouts

Small layers are formed on the stem in the axil of the leaves after flowering. Planting these seedlings is a simple method that allows you to get a full-fledged plant in the shortest time possible.

To do this, we perform the following actions:

  • after the stem has dried, cut off the matured outlet at a distance of 4 cm from the node;
  • put a branch in the water to get a strong root;
  • before planting, cut the leaf bundle up to 8 cm for better plant development;
  • we plant plank in open ground 7 weeks before the onset of frost;
  • we place the sprout so that the leaf nodule with roots is 1-2 cm below ground level, we mulch the soil;
  • if transplanting is done in late autumn, we plant the layers in a pot with light soil, sprinkle with a 1-cm layer of sand on top, leave the plant in a bright and warm place.

Cuttings planted in pots, watering throughout the winter, and in April we begin to harden: we take out into the street, gradually increasing the time the young plant is in the open air. We plant in open ground at the end of May.

Daylilies: basic care

With the arrival of spring, remove the layer of mulch, loosen the earth. In the first year after planting, you can not make fertilizers, and in the future we use complex feed with a low nitrogen content (spring), and potash-phosphorus - in winter.
Abundant watering is needed daylilies throughout the season. With insufficient moisture, the leaves turn yellow, lose their attractiveness and decoration. Water is poured at the very stem, not allowing it to fall on the buds.

Immediately remove faded flowers and seeds, this will accelerate the growth of new buds. Also cut dry dead leaves. At the end of the season, before frosts, we cut the leaves under the root and mulch the earth with peat.

What day lily plant: the best varieties

When choosing a daylily variety for planting, note that there are early, medium and late flowering species. This range will allow us to decorate the site with gorgeous and bright flowers that bloom from spring to autumn.

Beautiful daylilies, planting and care in the open field for which are very simple, they feel great almost everywhere. How to feed, when to replant, how to propagate, what to do in the fall and spring, you can also find out from the article if you read the text completely. Do not miss all the tricks of florist ...

Conditions for the cultivation of daylily - light, soil quality

Thanks to unpretentiousness and ease in growing and caring for the daylily, "flowers of joy" spread out in the gardens of the whole world. They decorate with themselves gardens in Europe, Asia, America and even northern countries. The duration of flowering and the beauty of the daylilies depends on how accurately the guidelines for planting and care will be observed.

Flowers love the sun, for them lit area all day. It is the lack of sun that explains why the plants in the garden  stopped blooming. Light shading is allowed when growing varieties with dark-colored petals. In direct sunlight, they can lose their brightness.

The underground part of the bush is represented by stolons - thickened rhizomes, in which moisture and nutrients accumulate during periods of drought. Novice gardeners believe that thanks to them, the flower can not be watered, but this is not so - the plant requires moisture for normal growth. For planting choose moisture soil. The ideal in this regard would be loam with the addition of peat and leafy ground.

Heavy soils, prone to stagnant water, are not suitable, as stolons start to suffocate on them due to lack of air, they rot. To get beautiful flowering daylilies, planting and care in the open field should be carried out on fertile, moderately loose soils. If clay predominates in the ground, it must be diluted with coarse river sand or vermiculite.

Daylilies in the garden - on the photo

Important(!)  Special demands on the quality of the soil makes a hybrid daylily. It blooms when it grows on fertile garden soil with a high content of rotten organic matter.

By the winds, drafts shrubs resistant. They tolerate low temperatures well, so when choosing a place for these plants you should not waste time on creating screens, natural shelters from cold air flows.

Daylilies - planting in open ground, technology, selection of seedlings, terms and schemes

In order to get a healthy and beautifully flowering shrub, planting should be done in early spring immediately after thawing of the soil or towards the end of summer when the plants bloom. It is then that the stolons contain the maximum amount of nutrients that will contribute to better rooting of the daylily. Experienced gardeners note that the best result is obtained when the plants are planted in autumn - the buds are clearly visible on the roots, from which leaves and flower stalks will grow.

With them it is much easier to divide the bush into several parts without damaging the growth point. To reduce the risk of losing plants in the winter, it is important to choose the right time for autumn planting.

It takes about 45 days for rooting for a pet, so planting in the fall should be carried out 1.5 months before the ground freezes — in September or late August, depending on the region. So, in the Urals, Siberia, an earlier landing was recommended, a little later in the Moscow region, Leningrad region, central Russia. In the south, including the Kuban, made a later landing.

  preparation for planting daylilies - on photo

When spring planting there is no risk of "falling out" of plants, it also has significant drawbacks. Young daylilies for the first year may not bloom. Especially often this happens when the bush is not properly divided, if there are few buds left in the deleny. It is necessary to replant before the active growth of leaves, that is, April or early May depends on the region.

To daylilies, planting and care in the open field which has its own characteristics, grow well, the soil must be dug to a depth of 30 cm, and the roots of weeds should be carefully removed. Planting pits need to do wider and deeper than the size of the root system of seedlings. The optimal planting pattern is 40 cm between plants in a row. Up to 70 cm between rows.

At the bottom of the pits, they put a mound of garden fertile soil with the addition of a tablespoon of complex fertilizer for flowers in the granules (nitrophoska, azofoska, nitroammophosca, and the like). Replace this nutrient mixture can be rotten manure with the addition of 100 g of wood ash. Daylily saplings before planting need to soak in a solution of growth stimulant and root formation for 5-6 hours, for this use:

  •   2 g / 1 l of water
  • Gibbersib on 1 g / 1 l of water
  • Heteroauxin 1 tablet / 5 l of water

After soaking, the stolons and roots are inspected, the damaged parts are cut off, the wounds are powdered with crushed coal. After that, pets are planted in the prepared pits. The roots are spread on the knolls, covered with garden soil, so that the growth bud is at a depth of 1-2 cm. The planted plants are watered, and then fill the ground in places where the ground is a donkey. Further care for the daylily consists of watering, fertilizing.

Daylily care all year round

In order to bloom daylilies, planting and care in the open field must follow without the slightest interruption. About 1.5 months, until the flowers form a complete root system, it is recommended to reduce watering. At this stage, you do not need a lot of moisture, as they remove it from stolons, and a large amount of water in the soil provokes rotting of the root system. When leaving and watering should not allow water to fall on the leaves, as they can rot at the base.

With proper preparation of the soil and planting pit, feeding daylilies in the first year is not needed, in subsequent years, the plant is fed three times per season. What nutrients does a day lily require, than to feed it in different periods:

  1. After the emergence of seedlings with nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers - urea (15 g / 1 sq. M.) And superphosphate (20 g / 1 sq. M.)
  2. During the formation of buds with potash fertilizers - potassium sulfate (15 g / 1 square meter) or wood ash (1 cup / 1 square meter)
  3. In the fall - with leaf compost (leafy earth) and humus (up to 3 kg / 1 sq. M.)

Since it is necessary to care for the daylily, not only by watering and fertilizing, gardeners will have to take care of the absence of weeds and maintaining the normal level of moisture in the soil by means of mulching plantings. Daylilies feel good, if all summer to keep the beds with them under the needles mulch with the addition of peat. With the onset of cold weather in late October or November, the layer of mulch is increased to 30 cm, and in early spring immediately after the snow melts it is removed.

For such a culture as daylilies, planting and caring in the open field, carried out according to all the rules, is the only way to achieve lush flowering, a little more hassle, and the garden will be painted with hundreds of bright splashes.

It is especially important to comply with this requirement when growing varieties of yellow, pink, white, as well as any light and pastel shades. It is advisable to cultivate red, purple, violet and any other varieties with dark staining of flowers in areas with partial shading, which is caused by the tendency of the petals to fade and premature wilt.

In close proximity to the flower beds with daylilies should not be located planting large trees or shrubs. Daylilies tolerate windy weather quite well, so they are in demand in coastal areas and areas with a windy climate. It is very important that the site does not have stagnant moisture throughout the year, especially in spring. With a high occurrence of groundwater planting is carried out on ridges or high beds.

Ideal for the cultivation of daylily is a plot with well-drained and rich in organic components soils. Preference should be given to loose loam with a cultivated layer not less than 0.45-0.60 m thick. When growing a flower on clay and heavy soils, it is necessary to add sand and a small amount of compost in the process of deep digging.

Optimal soil acidity indicators are 6-6.5 pH. Thus, for the cultivation of daylily requires a plot with neutral or slightly acidic soil. Excessive acidification of the soil implies preliminary liming of the landing area. Adjust the pH-indicators of alkaline soil can be by making peat or basic organic matter.  As a rule, pre-planting organic fertilizer has a very positive effect on the growth and development of flowering plants.

Rules for transplanting and planting

  • dig up sufficiently spacious planting pits, the dimensions of which should be one and a half times larger than the volume of the plant root system;
  • in the center of the planting hole, it is recommended to make a soil mound on which the plant prepared for planting is placed;
  • the root system of the plant should be carefully, but as carefully as possible spread on the embankment in the planting hole;
  • the root neck of the plant should not be too deep, and the standard location is a couple of centimeters above the ground;
  • after the root system of the plant is covered with soil, it is necessary to tamp it down a little and then to water it abundantly.

During the first two weeks after planting, daily irrigation activities are required. About a month after planting, the plants are first fed with mineral fertilizers or high-quality organic matter.

Care features

Growing a daylily in home gardening is not difficult, even for beginners or inexperienced gardeners. To preserve the health of plants and obtain lush, most abundant flowering, it is necessary to take into account some botanical features of daylilies, as well as follow these simple care guidelines:

  • in order for daylilies to bloom profusely, the ground at the level of the root system must be sufficiently moist;
  • watering is desirable to produce directly under the plant, especially at the flowering stage, in the evening;
  • irrigation during drought involves irrigation about four times a month;
  • when growing a daylily in areas represented by sandy soils, additional irrigation may be required;

  • to reduce water consumption and balance moisture, it is recommended to mulch the plantings;
  • it is obligatory to carry out irrigation measures when carrying out planned fertilizing;
  • daylilies are very responsive to fertilizer application, there must be at least three main fertilizing feeds per season;
  • in spring and in summer, at the stage of active growth, it is required to use complex mineral fertilizer for feeding, for example, “Mortar”;
  • in the fall, it is advisable to use any full-value phosphate-potassium fertilizers for daylily.

Possible problems

When purchasing planting material, it is necessary to conduct a careful visual inspection. All dead and dry parts of the root system are subject to mandatory removal before planting. Also it is very important that the foliage of the plant before planting is cut off at the level of 10-15 cm from the root collar,  which minimizes moisture loss during transpiration.

Experienced growers recommend pre-planting soaking of the daylily root system in solutions based on growth promoters and micronutrients. Quite often, the roots of the flower are damaged by rot, so it is advisable to treat them with the most effective fungicidal preparations.

It is important to remember that nitrogen supplements provoke a change in the color of the petals of red and purple varieties, and also make the flowers less attractive. It is impossible to use fresh manure for dressing, which causes active growth of green mass and inhibits daylily bloom.

Daylilies are able to grow without transplanting in one area for ten years. However, the most abundant and high-quality flowering occurs under the condition of dividing the bushes every five years.   It is possible to plant and transplant daylilies throughout the entire growing season, except for the flowering phase,  The best time for such procedures is the first decade of May and the end of August.

Combination with other plants

Daylilies in landscape design in recent years are used especially actively. They are very beautifully combined with a booklet and jerk, they look great with other bulbous flowering plants, including tulips. Dwarf varieties of daylilies are used to design alpine slides and rocky gardens. On the borders and in mixed flower beds are used low and medium varieties. For single plantings should choose tall daylilies.

How to plant a daylily (video)

Daylilies are widely used in decorative floriculture. These flowering plants have proven themselves very well, not only in single plants, but also in group plantings, as well as in the design of mixborders. Tetraploid varietal daylilies, which grow quickly enough and form large flowers of various colors, look most effectively in the modern landscape.

Daylilies  (Hemerocallis) are perennials, the flowers of which can be of different shades. The name of the plant is translated from Greek in two words: "hemera" - day and "kallos" - beauty. So it is called due to the fact that the flower fades the next day. People also call the plant “flower of joy”; they believe that if you touch a flower, it will bring good luck, sorrows and sorrows will go away.

Daylily Description

Day-lily - This is a perennial culture, it is perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions of winter in Russia, quietly endures abrupt changes in weather, strong northern winds, drafts, frosts. The plant loves moisture and good lighting. It is easy to care for him.

Different types of plants have different terms of bud blooming, from April to June. From the lush leaves are pulled flower stalks, with flowers in the shape of funnels.

Interesting!  Although the daylily flower lives only one day, this is usually not noticed, because there can be up to 50 buds on the peduncle, and many of them open every day, and there can be up to 30 peduncles on one plant.

Plants of one species bloom for about a month. The flowers have the smell of sandalwood and amber. Some of varieties  bloom 2 times during the vegetative period.

Beautifully and decoratively look double-row basal leaves, which are collected in a lush fan, it is straight or in the form of an arc. There are varnegate species, they have leaves with whitish or yellowish longitudinal stripes.

To make the garden look beautiful all season, plant a variety of daylily varieties.

Types and varieties of daylily

Natural species

In nature daylilies  grow on the edges of forests in partial shade. They are immune to diseases caused by fungi, resistant to pest attacks, easily tolerate dry summer, as well as excess moisture. Live long. Just take care of them. The most common types are - day-lily  redhead day-lily  Dumore, day-lily  lemon yellow, day-lily  Middendorf.

Day-lily  red or brown-yellow is eaten using flowers and buds, and salads are made from young foliage. The leaves are used in diseases of the liver and as a light sleeping pills.

Daylily hybrid or garden

This is the collective name of hybrids, there are more than 60,000 of them:

Daylilies  Group Double:

  • Double Dream apricot flowers;
  • Double Cutie with greenish yellow flowers;
  • Double Classic;
  • Double Red Royal with scarlet flowers.

These are double flowers, which additionally have perianth petals.

Daylilies  arachnids:

  • Helix with bright yellow flowers that have a crimson hue on the edges;
  • Grape Whitsch with a lot of purple-scarlet flowers;
  • Arms Tu Haven;

Planting a daylily

The soil

Daylilieslike fertile loams. If the soil on the site is heavy or lean, with landing  excavated from the landing pits priming  required to mix with fertilizers. But it is necessary to carefully enclose nitrogen, as it slows down the blooming of buds.

Tip!   Daylilies love soils rich in organic matter, having neutral or slightly acidic properties (6-6.5 pH) with drainage.

The plant has large rhizomes, they do not tolerate stagnant groundwater. With clay ground  add decomposed humus, manure, sand. Groundwater will not stagnate, if you do drainage, you can still make high beds.

Lighting

Daylilies  love the bright light but varietieswith a lighter color of flowers, it is recommended to plant in well-lit places, and varieties  with purple, scarlet flowers - plant in places with a slight shading. Culture also prefers a spacious place, since the diameter of the bush can be up to 70 cm.

Landing process

If you live in an area where there is a short autumn and a very frosty winter, then plant day-lily  better in spring. If you live in the south, plant a plant in the fall.

Reference!  Dig pits at a distance of at least 70 cm from each other to a depth of 30 cm.

To the ground, dug out of the pits, pour peat, humus, and also on 1 bucket of earth - 30 g of superphosphate, 30 g of potassium sulfate, mix everything thoroughly, otherwise the plants will burn. Pour the fertile ground into the hole, form a cone.

Before by landing  Plants inspect the rhizome, cut off all the decayed roots, powder the wounds with ash. Place the plants for 3-4 hours in a solution of Kornevin. You can make a willow infusion by placing willow branches in water for 2 days, and then put the roots daylilies  in this infusion for 3 hours.

Then place the plant on the earthen cone so that the root neck is 2-3 cm in the ground, smooth the rhizome, fill it with soil.

Pummel priming, water the plants plentifully, sprinkle the mulch from rotted sawdust, spruce needles, peat from above. First week after landing  culture is watered every day.

In the first year after planting, it is not necessary to feed the crop, due to the fact that it has enough fertilizers that you made when landing.

Daylily care

Care  behind daylilies  simple and easy.

Watering

Water the plants rarely, only if the weather is dry for a long time. In this case, such a heavy evening watering is necessary to priming it was moistened to a depth of 30 cm. The lack of moisture is visible on the faded leaves, due to the fact that the plants do not grow buds, after the buds have already appeared.

Fertilizer

Remember that fertilizing can be done 2 weeks after rooting. Young daylilies  fertilized 2-3 times during the vegetative period, and grown plants - 4-5 times.

Early spring make a solution of 1 tbsp. spoons of nitroammofoski granules and a bucket of water. Water culture under the root.

In April and May, it is fertilized with a solution of nitroammophosphate, ammophos, or diammonium phosphate.

Tip!   In summer, when blooming buds, flowers are fertilized with organic fertilizers: with a solution of bird droppings, mullein, fermented grass.

In September day-lily  fed with nitroammofoskoy or sulphate mixed with ashes - the choice of fertilizer depends on the region. This contributes to the fact that next season will grow larger flowers and there will be more.

Mulching

Mulch enclosed in order to priming  remained loose. In the center of the bush poured mulch from sand with a layer of 3 cm. If the land is depleted, on priming  peat or humus is poured between the bushes, and if the soil is rich in organic matter, then pine needles or bark are used. This protects the culture from sudden changes in weather, prevents evaporation of moisture in the ground and weed growth. Mulch a layer of 6-7 cm.

Daylily transplant

Daylilies  can be grown on the same plot for 15 years, but with the age of the flowers it becomes less and less. Therefore, the bushes are seated.

Dig the ground around daylily  and take out the plant with a large lump of earth, do it carefully so as not to damage the rhizome. Put the roots in the shower, then you wash priming, then carefully divide the individual fans. You can not even use a secateur, but if you still used it, then treat the wound with a fungicide.

Plant and transplant culture on a day when there is no sun. If the weather is hot and the sun is shining brightly, then place delenki and bushes in the river sand for 2 weeks so that new roots do not grow.

Before planting, trim the roots, cut the foliage to 15-20 cm. Plant  bushes to a new place.

Daylily breeding

Culture can be propagated by dividing the bush, rosettes, sowing seeds.

Dividing bush

When dividing the bush grown plants will have characteristics similar to the parent. The bush can be divided all season. But it is best to do it from early June to September, then the culture will be able to take root before the onset of frost. Usually the bush is divided at the age of 3-4 years or in case the buds become small.

Breeding rosettes

There is another breeding method, but it is suitable only for varietieswhich grow loose bushes.

When the plant is 3-4 years old, cut the outlet with the roots from the mother bush. Put a sharp spade in the place of the future cut and sharply separate the socket. After the socket is digged, removed from the soil and transplanted.

Wounds, cuts sprinkled with ashes or pounded coal. Do it in early spring when daylily  foliage begins to grow or fall after you cut the foliage from the plants.

Seed propagation

When seed reproduction grown young plants will be different from the parent, so this technique is used by breeders when they go to get a new grade.

Seeds are sown at the end of February in a box with soil. First, the seeds are laid out on moistened pebbles of small fraction, fabric or perlite. When the seeds swell and begin to spit, then sow them in pots with universal soil for seedlings. There should be drainage holes at the bottom of the pots. Seeds are placed at a depth of 1 cm. Well watered landingput on the south window sill. Sprouts are fertilized 1-2 times a month with complex fertilizers. 1-2 weeks before transplanting to the site they begin to harden the plants, putting them out for a short time on the balcony.

In late May, seedlings are planted in a permanent place in open ground.

Preparing for the winter

Daylilies  subdivided into deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen.

In deciduous plants in the fall the foliage turns yellow, dries, falls, they sleep until spring. Evergreens varieties  dormancy lasts 2-3 weeks. Semi-evergreens are somewhere in between: in the south they are like evergreen, and in the north they are deciduous, their foliage turns yellow, but they do not stop growing.

Tip!   In the north and east of Russia, if winter is expected without snow, evergreen and semi-evergreen plants can freeze out when the air temperature is below -20 degrees. Therefore, in the fall they need to cover up the fallen leaves, sprigs of spruce, pine, straw, sawdust. Also cover newly transplanted bushes. But in the beginning of spring, take shelter away, otherwise the plants underneath will sweep under it.

Do not forget to weed, tear up weeds, cut off faded flower stalks and dry leaves.

Pests and daylily diseases

The culture is rarely attacked by insects, it is not often sick, but sometimes it happens. The most dangerous pests are thrips, lily mosquitoes, water voles and slugs.

Thrips are small oblong beetles, they can be gray, brown, black. The length of the body is from 0.5 mm to 0.5 cm.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in buds, the larvae come out of them, in the process of growth they feed on petals, as a result the flowers will be deformed. If there are not too many mosquitoes, then tear off the withered flowers.

Water voles gnaw up the rhizomes of plants. You can buy poison and sprinkle it near minks, and also spray cotton wool or dried grass with poison and place it near the burrows, then voles will drag them away and poison them.

You can pick up slugs with your hands or spray them. landing  drug "Thunderstorm."

The most dangerous for daylily  diseases - fusarium, rust and root rot.

When root rot foliage stops growing, it becomes yellow. Dig up day-lily, cut off all the roots with rot, wash the roots in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and treat the wounds with Fitosporin, then dry the rhizome for 2 days and plant  plant to a new place. It will bloom only in 2 years. At the place from which you dug a crop with root rot, do not plant a year.

Day-lily  falls ill with rust if patrine is planted near. On the leaves daylily  visible pustules. When they crack, a powder of rusty color falls out. To prevent the disease, treat the plants with the fungicides Abiga-Peak, Oxyhom, Topaz.

When fusarium foliage turns yellow and falls, the rhizome looks like rot. The disease causes the fungus. If the plant is slightly affected by fusarium, then spray it with fungicides. If the culture is severely affected, then pluck and burn the shrub, and treat the plants close to the ground and ground it with foundationol.

For prevention, disinfect the tools used, add phytosporin-M when watering, loosen priming  after watering.

Day-lily  cold-resistant, incredibly beautiful plant that creates a feeling of peace and joy and does not require complicated care.

Some of the most long-flowering plants in the gardens are daylilies. Planting and care (photo of the correct fit in the article) is simple, but have their own subtleties. Let's learn how to plant these incredibly decorative perennials.

Even some 15-20 years ago we were familiar with only 4-5 natural species and several varieties that were obtained from the daylily of red.

But today, the number of different varieties exceeded one hundred and fifty and this is not the limit. They came from the crossing of various species and hybrids, to which we will devote a separate article.

When to plant daylilies

First, we recall that these flowers, in principle, can be divided and transplanted at any time, except during the frosty period. The only condition is that after planting, a certain period is required for the plant to take root and calmly survive the winter.

Since the heat in most parts of Russia, excluding the southern regions, begins in mid-May and ends in mid-September, the time for growing a flower is rather short.

Therefore, in order for the bushes to settle down and grow, it is advisable to transplant daylilies in the springtime. Especially long their local varieties, usually brought from afar, take root.

Spring landing

Planting in spring spring day (second name daylily) has its own characteristics. Now it's time to talk about them.

So, remember that in the middle part of Russia, varieties with a dark color should be planted in partial shade, and bright red and light varieties should be planted in the sun.

In the south, all varieties should preferably be planted in partial shade and shade, since direct sunlight and very high temperatures shorten the flowering time and burn the ends of the leaves. As a result, in the open sun, the appearance of the bush loses its freshness and attractiveness.

Selection and preparation of the landing site

The place in the garden, where bushes will constantly grow, should be chosen carefully. The ground there should be loose, high in nutrients, moderately moist.

Special attention should be paid to the amount of moisture in the soil. If the water is close to the surface, then beds or bedding should be made bulk.

If there is a lot of sand in the ground, then it is advisable to add soddy soil, some clay and leaf humus. Sand, gypsum and husk must be added to the clay soil.

The area allotted for the plants is dug two or three times, then leveled.

Landing

First, prepare the landing pits. Their size depends on the size of the root system of the day. The pit is dug 15–20 cm larger than the root size.

The distance between adjacent bushes is 40-60 cm.

At the bottom of the pit, the ground is poured by a low hill, on which the roots of a flower are placed.

First try on the level at which the plant's neck is located (the place where the roots pass into the leaves). It should be recessed at a distance of 2.5 - 4 cm from the surface of the site.

Reduce the bulk pile if its height is too large and the neck falls at the level of the surface or peeps over it.

Then, carefully lay out the cord roots on the sides of the slide and carefully cover it with soil. At the same time it is impossible to tamp the ground with feet, so as not to damage the root system.

After planting, the daylily immediately needs care. First, pour it with plenty of water. With this watering, the roots at a depth of 6-8 cm will be sufficiently moistened.

Then, it would be nice to cover the ground around the bush with a layer of mulch (4 to 7 cm). This will help keep the soil in a loose state, as well as reduce the number of waterings.

In the future, the entire care consists of regular watering and fertilizing, which we describe in. A daylily has been growing in my garden for over 10 years. He never demanded a lot of time and special attention from me. Moreover, I try to grow different varieties with different colors, which I will discuss in our next article.
